Jan  2005  when  browsing  the  net  I  had  come  across  a  site  called  Planet  catfish.  Having  a  affinity  toward  bottom  dwellers  since  my  earliest  days  in  the  hobby  I  found  the  site  fascinating.  In  my  tanks  there  always  were  loaches  or  Corydoras.

I  was  attracted  in  particular  by  the  upside  down  catfish(Synodontis  nigriventris).  Having  been  helped  by  Adip  once  I  again  enquired  with  him.  In  the  Feb2005  first  week  he  called  me  to  say  that  Mr  Rajendra  Kumar  had  three  upside  down  catfish  to  give  away.  On  contacting  Mr  Rajendra  Kumar,  Raj  as  he  is  called  affectionately  I  arranged  a  meeting  with  him.

Having  heard  the  legends  about  Mr  Raj  I  was  apprehensive,  Particularly  with  his  pedigree  dogs.  But  Mr  Raj  put  me  at  ease  and  showed  me  his  magnificent  Tanks.  One  planted  tank  in  particular  had  been  running  for  four  years.  He  also  showed  me  his  beautiful  collection  of  goldfishes.  He  then  explained  to  me  about  Cycling  of  the  tanks  before  adding  fishes  and  brought  to  my  notice  his  several  articles  in  Aquarticles.

He  showed  me  his  catfishes.  He  explained  that  they  were  in  fact  feather  fin  catfishes(Synodontis  eupterous).  He  personally  bagged  them  for  me  and  asked  me  to  be  wary  of  their  spines.  Here  is  one  of  the  beauty...

One  year  down  the  line  I  also  managed  to  get  a  Nigriventris.  Here  are  both  for  comparison...

This  was  also  the  begining  of  my  multi-tank  syndrome.  How  I  managed  to  convince  my  better  half  in  the  next  post  Chuckle

There  were  lot  of  things  happening  in  the  first  few  months  of  2005.  In  order  to  finish  an  incident  I  might  have  to  go  back  and  forth  between  months.  Please  bear  with  me.  So  in  order  to  continue  with  the  tale  of  Synodontis  eupterous....

Having  collected  the  fishes  from  Mr  Raj  in  Feb  I  put  them  in  my  first  and  only  tank  then.  The  layout  of  that  tank  had  been  changed  from  Planted  Eden  to  Crypt  Jungle.  These  fishes  were  not  suitable  for  planted  aquariums,  But  I  had  no  choice.

Like  I  had  mentioned  earlier  in  2005  a  lot  of  fish  competitions  were  going  on.  The  theme  of  April  2005  competition  was  Bottom  dwellers/Scavengers.  I  decided  to  compete  with  my  fishes.

Before  hand  I  called  up  Mr  Raj  and  informed  him  of  my  intentions  and  requested  his  permission  to  compete.
He  immediately  told  me  to  go  ahead.  On  informing  him  that  I  was  going  to  compete  with  fishes  given  free  to  me  Mr  Raj  told  me  to  pay  Rs1/-  for  them  if  I  won.  Chuckle

 And  I  WON!

Here  is  the  link,  Check  the  lively  banter  between  the  members  and  Admins.  http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1236

I  think  I  gloated  a  bit,  and  Jenny(Dolphy)  got  miffed.  But  she  had  the  last  laugh  when  her  entry  Bronze  corydoras  (corydoras  aenus)  spawned.

I  stepped  on  the  toes  of  another  person  when  I  won  the  competition.  Mr  Trevor  Menezes.  Our  secretary  of  ASK,  he  had  an  uninterrupted  run  of  success  in  these  competitions  till  I  won.  And  to  top  it  all  I  a  newbie  received  the  winning  gift  voucher  from  him.
The  blood  curdling  threats  I  got  from  him,  I  decided  that  it  was  much  easier  to  compete  and  win  in  local  body  elections  where  they  broke  only  heads  Chuckle

The  fall  out  of  this  win  resulted  in  pacifying  my  better  half's  objections  to  my  aquarium  hobby  as  well  as  facilitating  my  evolving  into  multi-tank  hobbyist.

 So  the  hint:
pack  your  good  looking  fishes  safely.  Then  loudly  announce  you  are  entering  your  fishes  into  a  competition.  Make  a  lot  of  fuss  the  previous  night  as  well  as  early  morning  regarding  the  tubs,  nets  ,  plastic  bags  etc.
Then  make  of  for  three  hours  to
 1)  Bangalore-  Commercial  st,  Brigade  road  or  MG  road.
 2)  Hyderabad-  the  posh  places  where  PYT's  hang  out
 3)  Mumbai-  Marine  drive
 4)  Delhi-  Connohought  palace(  Correct  spelling  please?)
Loaf  for  around  three  hours  watching  the  Pretty  Young  Thing's  and  taking  care  to  see  your  fishes  are  safe.  Then  go  to  a  LFS  and  pickup  any  goods  costing  Rs500/-.  Return  home  and  proclaim  in  a  loud  voice  that  you  have  won  the  first  prize  and  watch  all  the  resistance  from  your  family  to  your  plan  of  adding  a  few  more  tanks  melt  away.

 It  works  ROFL

Tomorrow,  My  meeting  Mr  Trevor  Menezes

 Regards,
 Nayak.

Ravi  lived  probably  5  houses  away  from  Venket  but  actually  tracked  him  down  through  the  net.  I  think  he  was  searching  for  Chennai  Aquarium  Club.  I  would  need  Ravi  to  confirm  to  that.

 Yep.

 Good  one....Nayak...Enjoying  thoroughly...

 Nice  Reality  Show  going  on.....

I  am  following  this  thread,  every  episode.......could  relate  a  lot  of  things  to  the  way  I  have  got  into  this  hobby  with  all  the  stupid  stunts  I  have  made.....E.g.  to  save  a  gold  fish  with  an  advice  given  by  an  LFS  over  phone....

LFS  told  me  to  give  "Salt  bath  to  a  Gold  Fish".....

I  had  literally  given  a  salt  bath  to  that  poor  soul....!!!!!

...years  down  the  line,  I  hope  to  write  a  similar  write  up  on  IAH...

Had  an  opportunity  to  interact  with  couple  to  pioneers  mentioned  in  your  post  like  Raj,  Trevor,  Adip....Hope  to  meet  others  as  well...

Truly  they  would  stand  out  for  their  contributions  to  this  hobby  in  India

Trevor  I  bumped  into  IAH  while  going  thro'  one  of  the  articles.I  had  in  fact  was  searching  frantically  before  for  a  dedicated  forum  but  was  unable  to  find  one  until  I  chanced  upon  the  articles  by  Mr.Norfolk  which  provided  a  link  to  IAH.Soon  after  reading  the  articles  I  registered  immediately.Even  tho'  I  used  to  regularly  visit  the  Govt  Aquarium,   it  never  occured  to  me  to  pay  a  visit  to  the  office  located  downstairs  which  I  thought   was  just  like  any  other  Govt.  office.  Sad

 Dinesh.

Though  I  was  a  member  of  ASK  for  a  couple  of  months  now  I  could  not  meet  Madan  or  Trevor.  Re-organization  of  the  ASK  was  going  on  and  both  of  them  were  busy.

I  could  meet  Trevor  only  in  mid  Feb2005  when  the  theme  of  the  competition  for  that  month  was  decided  as  Cichlids.  It  was  a  group  meeting  with  lot  of  members  and  us  newbies  around.

After  introducing  about  ourselves  as  well  as  our  interests,  our  Secretary  Mr  Trevor  menezes  addressed  us....

You  people  think  you  can  keep  all  types  of  fishes  together  in  your  aquariums.  You  people  think  you  can  keep  all  types  of  fishes  in  your  planted  tank  too.  Only  certain  type  of  fishes  can  be  kept  together.  There  is  something  called  fish  compatibility.  Just  like  animals  there  are  herbivorous  and  carnivorous  fishes.  Also  only  so   many  fishes  can  be  kept  in  different  size  tanks.  You  fill  your  tanks  with  fishes  and  then  cry  my  fishes  have  died.

Every  word  of  his  though  addressed  to  the  gathering  was  as  if  it  was  pointed  at  me.  At  that  time  in  my  Planted  Eden  of  cabomba,  Bacopa  and  Hygrophila  difformis  I  had  a  fauna  of
2  albino  red  tail  sharks,  6  red  eye  tetras,  4  blood  fin  tetras,  6  Serpae  tetras,  2  bronze  corydoras,  2  yellow  morphs  and  2  blue  morphs.

 Our  Honourable  Secretary  continued....

Are  you  all  members  of  IAH?  and  when  we  nodded  affirmative,

See,  you  buggers  can  ask  any  question  to  us  directly.  But  IAH  is  a  web  forum  where  your  posts  are  read  by  people  throughout  India.  You  people  represent  Bangalore  and  ASK.  If  you  post  nonsense  on  IAH  or  if  you  use  wrong  grammar  with  spelling  mistakes  I  am  going  to  change  your  ranking  to  Gambusia,  Guppy,  Platy,  molly  etc.

At  this  threat  the  group  of  newbies  became  suitably  chastisized.  During  that  time  the  ranking  on  IAH  was  based  on  post  count.  How  well  this  threat  worked  can  be  seen  from  the  Bangalore  members  posting.  Though  members  for  nearly  four  years  now  only  a  few  of  us  have  crossed  a  thousand  posts.Even  today  I  use  spell  check  or  if  the  post  is  long  I  use  Microsoft  word  to  check  my  grammar.

We  newbies  never  uttered  a  word,  primarily  because  we  were  scared  and  secondarily  because  we  were  annoyed  with  Mr  Trevor.  He  had  jacked  up  the  price  during  the  silent  auction  and  we  newbies  were  the  sacrificial  lambs  Chuckle

Then  the  meeting  was  resumed  with  the  agenda  being  the  theme  of  competition  fish.  It  was  decided  as  Cichlids  excluding  Angels  and  Discus.  Also  was  discussed  the  Cichlids  of  India  and  prime  amoung  them  Etroplus  canerensis.

It  was  during  that  time  that  Adip  introduced  the  Idea  of  a  recce  for  Etroplus  canerensis.  Since  I  am  from  Mangalore  he  asked  me  to  go  to  Subramanya  and  get  some  information.

 Regards,
 Nayak.
