PostPosted: Thu May 21, 2009 11:35 am Post subject: Glossostigmata requirements ? Reply with quote

 Hello.

I  am  in  the  process  of  setting  up  a  planted  tank  of  dimension  2X1.5X1  ft.  I  have  laterite  +  peat  moss  +  fertile  plant  as  substrate.  Lighting  us  3.5  WPG  of  T5  light.  CO2  injection  is  DIY  CO2  diffused  with  glass  diffuser.  And  tank  temperature  is  on  an  average  27.5  C  throughout  the  day  ,  at  night  it  falls  to  23-24  C  if  I  lift  up  the  hood.

Does  my  tank  meet  the  requirements  of  Glossostigmata  ?  What  else  does  it  require  (  apart  from  ferts  ,  will  start  PMDD  soon  )  ?

I  am  planning  for  a  triangular  aquascape.  Not  the  regular  triangular  one.  The  glosso  carpet  will  extend  from  front  right  corner  to  rear  left  corner  (  and  cover  the  back  parts  ).  The  other  front  triangle  will  be  blank.  It's  like  we  will  have  2  triangles  if  we  draw  a  diagonal  on  a  rectangle.  The  diagonal  divides  it  into  2  triangles.  One  (  the  rear  one  )  of  the  triangles  will  be  planted.  Got  it  ?

How  do  I  plant  glosso  ?  1  inch  apart  ?  or  in  bunches  ?  pls  help.

Temp  -  Yes,  but  would  be  good  if  you  can  add  a  CPU  fan,  it  will  bring  the  temperature  further  down.

DIY  co2  -  I  personally  havent  tried,  but  it  would  be  very  difficult  to  get  the  desired  effect.

The  temperature  is  after  using  4  CPU  fans.  Humidity  is  very  high  here,  but  in  places  like  Gurgaon  temperature  drops  from   40  C  to  22   C  with  just  one  fan  ,  because  there  is  very  low  humidity.
Since  I  have  a  hood  ,  the  cooling  effect  further  reduces.  As  if   you  have  a  open  hood  tank  with  a  fan  ,  the  fan  functions  like  a  '  cold  air  intake  '  that  is  it  pushes  cold  air  from  outside  into  the  tank.  At  night  ,  when  I  take  away  the  hood  with  the  fan  on  ,  temperature  touches  21  C.  So  I  will  get  fixtures  installed  soon.

Prem  ,  Tom  Barr  says  that  Excel  /  other  organic  carbon  source  speeds  up  plant  growth  by  2X  and  DIY  CO2  speeds  up  growth  by  15X.  I  saw  many  tanks  with  lush  glosso  carpet  who  only  dose  Excel.  So  with  DIY  CO2  the  case  should  be  atleast  a  lot  better  than  excel.  I  might  use  Azoo  Carbon  plus  in  addition  to  DIY  CO2.

Another  question.  Many  sources  say  Glosso  plants  need  a  rich  substrate.  Will  it  be  of  any  use  to  Glosso  ,  if  I  add  root  tab  ferts  to  the  substrate  ?

Yup  I  too  read  and  looked  at  the  gorgeous  looking  tanks  without  pressurized  co2.  As  i  said  i  havent  tried,  so  you  might  as  well  give  it  a  shot.

Yes  glosso  requires  a  nutrient  rich  substrate  and  it  sure  helps  in  their  growth  rate.  I  have  also  seen  tanks  with  our  good  old  substrate  with  good  glosso  growth.

Not  sure  about  root  tabs,  havent  used  them  for  glosso  or  anyother  plants  except  for  crypts  and  that  too  because  the  tank  just  has  normal  river  gravel,  no  co2  and  just  one  36  watt  light  and  its  135  gallon  tank.

 Cheers,
 Prem

Did  u  check  it  urself?  I  dont  think  a  cpu  fan  has  so  much  power,  then  why  will  I  install  AC  fan  Chuckle
 Please  confirm.

U  r  using  a  giant  Tirthada,  remember  that  Very Happy

He  is  telling  us  something  strange(atleast  it  seems  to  me)"one  cpu  fan  and  temp  drop  is  40->22",  that's  why  I  request  him  to  check  it  by  himself.

I  was  talking  about  Tirtha's  post  only.  It  seemed  Tirtha  used  only  1  cpu  fan.  How  many  fans  did  you  use  Tirtha  ?  And  what  does  he  mean  about  '  giant  thing  '  ?   Very Happy

Babai, the  fan  Tirthada  used  is  a  Rotary  AC  fan  ,8"  in  diameter. Its  not  a  cpu  fan. Its  a  huge  fan  and  that's  why  there  was  such  a  temparature  drop.Cpu  fans  are  not  that  good.Get  a  rotary  ac  fan  of  4"  dismeter. That's  enough.Your  tank  temparature  won't  ever  touch  27  degree  C  also.By  the  way  I  don't  think  this  is  the  right  time  to  go  for  Glosso.I  don't  know  how  much  you  are  potent  enough  with  plants, but  wait  for  the  rains. It  should  start  in  a  month  in  Kolkata. Then  go  for  glosso. The  rest  answer  is  in  the  article  posted  by  Prem.Good  Luck, bro.  Thumbs Up

Stay  away  from  Glosso  for  another  one  and  half  month.  Let  the  rain  start.

I  will  delay  the  project  for  the  time  being  till  temperature  drops.  By  the  way  ,  Tirtha  ,  once  I  get  a  carpet  full  of  glosso  (  no  harm  in  imagining  )  ,  in  the  summer  months  when  tank  temp  reaches  even  30  will  the  carpet  be  ok  ?  Do  I  need  low  temp  just   for  initial  growth  ?
