It  is  a  Knifefish  (related  to  the  more  commonly  available  Black  Ghost  knifefish).

I  think  it  is  Clown  Knifefish  (Chitala  chitala),  but  I  can't  be  sure  from  the  picture.

Its  referred  to  as  a  black  knife  fish(Notopterus  notopterus)  or  Kandhuli  in  Assam.  Its  eaten  over  here  and  is  sort  of  a  delicacy.  One  thing  I  am  not  sure  about  is  the  colour.  In  the  rivers  its  silver  in  colour  and  likewise  in  the  fish  market  silver  after  death  also.  But  if  kept  in  an  aquarium  it  turns  black,  might  have  some  silver  in  the  underbelly  but  body  is  all  black.   Confused

 Regards
 Simanta.

Also  a  common  fact  about  Chitala/Chital  (in  Bangla)  that  it  is  a  monstrous  eater.  During  floods  in  West  Bengal/Assam  these  fishes  come  into  ponds  from  the  Brahmaputra/Tista  and  ends  up  all  the  fishes  there!!

Also  they  say  the  bigger  a  Chitala  is,  the  better  is  tastes.  Heard  stories  from  my  father  about  them  being  caught  from  Brahmaputra  weighing  upto  50  kgs  !!!

The  Notopterus  chitala  grows  to  be  very  big.  the  biggest  one  I  ever  saw  was,  well  a  dead  one,  it  was  carried  by  three  fisherman  hooked  to  a  bamboo  pole.  It  was  offloaded  from  a  mini  truck,  its  head  was  already  tied  to  the  pole,  the  pole  was  carried  over  the  shoulders  of  the  3  men,  the  fish  tail  was  sweeping  about  2ft  on  the  road,  so  calculating  the  average  height  of  the  pole  from  ground  to  be  around  5ft  and  the  sweeping  tail  2ft,  the  fish  was  more  than  7ft  in  length.  It  was  weighed  later  on  to  be  (cant  remember  exactly)  somewhere  around  65+  Kgs.
On  the  other  hand  the  Notopterus  notopterus,  which  looks  a  miniature  of  the  chitala,  well  the  biggest  one  I  have  seen  is  about  7"  only.
