I need help to set up a planted aquarium all by myself . I got some quote from aquarium designers
and they seem to quote such exorbitant rates and i wld like to learn as i do it myself .
I have a 2 feet yuemei RT 620 imported tank . I would like to convert it to a low tech planted aquarium . With no co2 if it is not
mandatory . the tank itself comes with two t8 tubes 20 w each , one in white and one in blue .
I am currently using can water bought from shops , since we dont have RO .
my idea is to have a planted aquarium with some carpet plants and few other cheaper plants . I have
this rock bought from aqua star which is porous ( dont know exactly what it is ) .
i have a air pump for filtering already set up . this is the present situation . i wld like to convert this to a planted one .
Now my questions for which i seek answers from all helping hands here : ( i may sound completly stupid , plz tolerate my ignorance as i am a newbie )
1 . Is the t8 lighting enough for a low tech planted aquarium for photosynthesis . i currently dont have
a provision for LED as this is a closed tank and the budget is low . both are 20 w each and 2 feet in length , one is white and other one is aqua blue .
2 . From what i have read here red soil and sand ratio works well for the bed . will it be clear or muddy if using red soil ? i am gonna try this . but if i am to buy substrate , tell me the cheaper options and where i can get them in chennai .
3. what is laterite , is it nothing but construction sand ?
4 . my choice of fauna is to have tetra's .. what other faunas can be introduced along with tetras . i also wld like to add one or two shrimps , if it is advisable .
5 . where can i get cheap plants in chennai , also in kolathur .. looking for carpets as well as other cheaper ones .
6 . is fertilizer mandatory , if so , which and how much to use and where to buy and the cost of it plz .
7 . as of now i dont want to go for co2 . can an air pump and air stone be a alternative ( stupid question ?? may be ) . hope they dont disturb the sand .
8 . can any porous stone be used in a planted aquarium ?the stone i have is not volcanic , but a porous one .
9 . last time when i tried having tetra in a normal , non planted tank , the tetras didn't eat much and died one by one . wats is the best feed for small fishes like tetras .
10 . how frequent is a water change necessary in such a setting without co2 . if setting a low end co2 , what wld be the approximate cost of installing one for a 2 feet tank .
11 . how long should the tubes in the tank be switched on for a day . say like how many hours photo period ?
I know this is too much to ask , but lot more queries coming up as i start it .. there is always a joy in DIY projects
have attached a pic of the tank, in present condition .
