 Hi  all

 Currently  i  use  :
 2  x  36W  PLL  (4000  k  Philips)
 3  x  36W  T8  (8000  k  Osram  skywhite)
 1  x  36W  T12  (Hitachi)
 2  x  36W  T8  (6400  k  Philips  trulite)

The  total  power  consumption  of  the  tubes  +  ballast  (electronic)  losses  etc  are  around  300W
Can  i  not  use  2  x  150  (or  70)  MH  lamps  instead  ?  same  electricity  consumption  ..?  Would  that  be  more  efficient  or  would  using  T5  flouorescents  be  more  efficient  ?
 My  tank  is  48"  x  18"  x  24"  (L  x  W  x  H)

 Best
 Soumi

The  MHs  will  not  give  you  uniform  light  throughout  the  tank.  Rana  is  using  it  and  is  thinking  of  switching  over  to  strips  as  he  is  not  satisfied  with  MHs'  results.  Also  in  MH  you  will  not  get  this  range  of  temperatures.  Personally  I  use  MH  but  that's  because  my  tank  is  smaller.

i  have  seen  many  guys  turning  off  MH  during  summer.  MH  generates  more  heat  compared  to  any  other  alternative  light  set.  and  again  MH  depends  on  the  dimension  of  you  tank.  if  your  gonna  have  MH  for  your  marine  tank  say  no  unless  you  have  chiller.  if  its  a  planted  tank  provide  lots  of  space  between  the  water  surface  and  the  light  so  there  could  be  a  free  flow  of  air  and  make  sure  you  fix  a  small  fan(internal  fans  used  for  cooling  you  computer  system)  on  either  side.

 hi  Soumi

Well  to  ans  your  question,  It's  simple  What  you  forgot  was  to  add  the  power  loss  in  MH  ballasts  these  losses  are  very  high  in  MH  ballast  that  we  get  here,  It  can  be  as  high  as  30W-40W  a  ballast.  So  using  2  MH  will  actually  equate  in  terms  of  power  consumption  at  360W-380W.  Then  comes  the  fact  that  you  cannot  have  different  colour  temperatues  as  you  do  now.  Finally  the  heat  factor,  this  is  a  big  problem  Especially  during  summers.

On  a  personal  note,I  was  using  MH  in  my  tank.  When  I  shifted  to  T8  2  good  things  happened.  I  was  bein  shouted  at  lesser  at  home, mind  u  it  din't  stop  completely   Chuckle  ,  Secoundly  my  plants  have  actually  done  better  under  flouresent  lights  than  MH.
Now  with  your  tank  in  particular  the  heigth  becomes  a  crucial  factor.  Here  you  can  opt  for  T5HO  system.  The  good  part  is  that  the  penetration  of  these  lamps  under  water  is  as  good  as  MH.  Infact  these  lamps  were  engeneered  to  come  in  as  new  generation  replacements  for  MH.

To  sum  it  up  for  me  the  colour  of  light  is  as  important  as  the  amount  of  light.  Now  that  there  is  a  lamp  that  can  provide  the  same  penetration  as  MH  I  feel  its  the  best  source  of  light  available  to  Hobbyists  as  of  now!

   Hope  this  has  helped.

   Regards
    Harshal.
