Hi  everyone!  I  just  got  a  pair  of  discus  a  few  days  ago  (planning  to  get  a  few  more,  since  2  is  not  a  nice  number  when  it  comes  to  keeping  them)
I  am  attaching  the  pics,  and  would  really  appreciate  it  if  you  could  tell  me  what  kind  of  discus  these  are  and  how  much  should  they  cost  in  Mumbai. They  are  approx  3.5  inches  each
Also,  the  yellow  discus  developed  black  spots  near  its  mouth  and  the  sides  of  the  bidy  after  a  day  or  so......I  don't  know  the  reason  for  this!  Plz  help!!
How  many  times  should  I  do  a  water  change,  and  what  should  I  add  while  changing  the  water,  apart  from  dechlorinator.  Any  other  advice  would  also  be  really  helpful,  as  I  am  new  to  keeping  discus.

 hi  there
you  seem  to  have  got  yourself  a  nice  looking  pair  of  fish....The  red  white  one  is...welll  called  a  red  white   Very Happy   what  else  can  it  be  called  and  the  other  one  is  a  pigeon  blood  discus
The  black  spots  you  talking  about  is  nothing  that  you  have  to  worry  about  its  something  called  peperring  which  is  common  to  pigeon  blood  discus  so  dont  worry  about  it  too  much.
You  can  change  50  percent  of  the  water  everyday  if  you  can  or  at  least  once  every  other  day  and  since  they  are  a  bit  new  adding  a  handful  orf  rock  salt  everyday  after  a  water  change  would  be  advisable  and  would  help  them  settle  down  faster.
The  biggest  rule  of  keeping  discus  is  K  I  S  S  (keep  it  simple  stupid)
Keep  the  water  nice  and  clean  good  food  and  strong  aeration  and  you  will  see  that  discus  are  not  that  bad  after  all!

Pigeon  blood  with  black  peppering  is  common,  so  no  need  to  worry.

The  other  one  is  Red  Passion  /  red  white.

I  notice  some  decorum/  small  piece  of  bog  wood  at  the  other  corner  of  your  tank.  First  discard  that  and  what  are  your  tank  specifications???

Looking  at  the  pics  ,  i  feel  that  your  tank  is  a  two  footer  and  these  two  discus  of  3.5  inches  are  more  than  sufficient  for  this  tank  size.  Dont  go  by  this  myth  of  2  is  not  a  nice  number.  If  you  have  bigger  tank  (4  footer),  you  can  even  keep  12  nos  of  discus(around  6  inches).

Regarding  maintenance,  please  do  regular  water  changes  and  stick  on  that  schedule  strictly.  Better  check  the  pH  of  your  water  and  adding  dechlorinator  is  the  safest  option  always.

Happy  Discus  keeping  and  all  the  best  Thumb Up

 Thanks
 KS

Thaks  for  the  replies!  I  thought  that  keeping  the  bogwood  would  make  the  water  acidic,  which  the  discus  prefer.  If  that's  not  the  case,  I'll  be  happy  to  remove  it.
Also,  what  abt  the  price  of  the  discus?  The  red  one  is  being  given  to  me  for  1800  bucks  and  the  pigeon  blood  for  1000.  Is  that  reasonable,  or  is  it  too  high  a  price?  I  am  concerned  abt  the  price  as  well.  I  remeber  someone  telling  me  to  add  hypo  instead  of  dechlorinator  for  discus.  Is  that  true?  I  don't  even  know  what  'hypo'  is.  Any  clues?  Thanks  once  again!

Regarding  the  price,  there  is  no  point  in  discussing  now  as  you  have  already  bought  them.  Chuckle

 Hi,
The  price  looks  OK  to  me.  The  PB  has  a  good  peppering  which  shall  reduce  its  price.  You  can  use  this  point  to  negotiate  Wink  You've  got  good  size  fish.  Good  thing  you  got  both  of  the  same  size.

Should've  got  a  few  more.  As  they  grow  the  stronger/larger  one  will  start  to  harass  the  weaker/smaller  one.   In  a  group  the  aggression  is  distributed  &  no  single  fish  is  targeted.  Thats  the  logic  behind  keeping  Discus  in  a  group.

About  the  PH  of  the  water  pl.  don't  mess  with  it  unless  you're  an  expert.   PH  fluctuations  will  grossly  affect  Discus.  They  can  tolerate  PH  upto  7.5  -  8  !  The  trick  is  as  ~KS  said~  to  keep  the  water  pristene  clear  &  feed  them  atleast  4  X  daily  with  min.  2  X  25%  WCs  daily.

Hypo  ~  if  I'm  right  ~  is  the  stuff  Photographers  use  to  develop  photos.   You  can  get  it  at  any  of  the  fish  shops.  I  personally  get  it  from  the  Kurla  market.

How  do  you  do  your  water  changes  ?  What  food  do  you  feed  ?

 nice  looking  fishes..
 And  they  look  familiar..Where  r  u  from???

@  ks  they  are  definately  red  whites  and  not  red  passions..  Smile

I  believe  most  of  the  imp  things  have  already  been  discussed  here..

I  would  say  a  WC  once  a  day..35-50%  is  more  than  enough..

feeds  BHM/Tetrabits  twice  a  day  should  suffice..

Happy  discus  keeping  !!  Â   Thumb Up

I  am  doing  a  daily  wc  of  abt  25%.  I  feed  them  discus  food  from  sera  and  also  have  hikari  pellets  that  I  haven't  started  feeding  them.  I  plan  on  getting  2  more  discus,  as  i  am  aware  of  the  aggression  issue.
For  filtration,  I  have  a  sponge  filter  with  4  sponges  and  a  power  filter  which  I  turn  for  some  time  daily.  Is  that  ok?  What's  the  best  way  to  do  a  wc?  I  take  out  the  water  using  a  siphon  pipe,  and  fill  it  up  the  old  fasioned  way  -  with  a  bucket  and  mug.  My  water  pipe  that  I  use  for  the  other  tanks  does  not  reach  the  discu  tank.  Is  that  fine?

What's  the  best  way  to  do  a  wc?  I  take  out  the  water  using  a  siphon  pipe,  and  fill  it  up  the  old  fasioned  way  -  with  a  bucket  and  mug.  My  water  pipe  that  I  use  for  the  other  tanks  does  not  reach  the  discu  tank.  Is  that  fine?

Keep  well  areated  the  water  in  bucket.  Have  a  big  pipe  &  and  extra  power  head.  Connect  the  pipe  with  power  head,  put  it  on  the  bucket  &  simply  turn  on  the  power  head  &  put  the  other  end  of  pipe  in  tank.  Thumb Up

Surprised  Don't  you  have  anything  better  to  do  in  life..  Get  a  bigger  pipe  man.  Discus  keepers  generally  have  piping  installed  in  the  tank  to  make  water  changes  simpler(just  a  few  turns  on  different  livers).  check  out  Beta's  fish  room  thread,  and  see  how  the  pipings  are  installed  and  you  will  get  some  idea..  This  way  you  are  going  to  get  pretty  bored  after  sometime.
A  few  people  uses  small  pumpsets  to  pump  out  the  water  from  the  tank  and  then  pumping  in  overnight  aerated  water   back  into  the  tank.

Also  remember,  if  you  have  any  other  tanks,  please  do  not  mix  their  equipment  with  the  discus  equipment.  This  inclused  pipes  for  water  change,  nets,  and  any  other  thing  that  is  shared.  Food  is  ok   Chuckle   .  Hey  just  keep  it  simple  as  possible.  Will  help  you  with  these  fish.

 Hi  Akg,

It  is  very  easy  to  keep  discus  keeping  in  mind  that  you  have  the  basics  of  discus  keeping  right.  As  per  the  above  mails  do  use  seperate  equipments  for  your  discus  tank,  wc  daily  is  a  must  which  can  be  between  25%-100%,  feeding  schedule  for  them  should  be  3-4  times  a  day(  feed  them  as  much  as  they  can  eat,  filteration  being  sponge  filter  as  turbulance  can  stress  them,  temperature  at  30  degrees,  useage  of  addtitives  to  take  care  of  chlorine-chloromine-and  heavy  metals,  and  if  they  are  used  to  your  water  parameters  then  dont  try  to  alter  the  ph.

Good  to  know  that  you  have  taken  out  the  wood  decorative.  Just  nake  sure  that  the  tank  is  cleaned  propery  i.e  clear  all  the  uneaten  food  every  day.

It  can  be  fatel  if  the  your  discus  is  chasin  the  other,  and  to  aviod  this  you  can  add  2  more  discus.  Remember  to  shift  them  to  a  bigger  environment  as  they  reach  to  a  bigger  size.

Guess,  this  is  all  that  you  have  to  keep  in  mind.  Experts  do  correct  me  if  i'm  wrong.

 regards,
 surya
