 Dear  All,

After  reading  an  article  on  MBUNA  BRED  in  IAH  I  bought  3  pairs  of  Mbuna  which  i  love  a  lot.  I  quite  know  to  identify  male  and  female  One  pair  was  pairing.  For  sometime  I  didnot  notice  tank.  Now  the  fishes  are  thin  (  sure  they  ate  a  lot  cos  I  feed  them  dried  brineshrimp  daily  )  .

What  are  the  signs  to  identify  the  mbuna  has  fries  in  mouth.

 Chitra.

Open  its  mouth  or  wait  till  it  opens  its  mouth.  Or  gently  lift  it  slightly  out  of  the  water.

Just  watch  her  behavior,  hiding  in  a  corner  or  inside  the  cave   and  her  lower  jaw  is  droped  a  bit.  Leave  her  alone  for  15  days,  brooding  period  will  be  over  and  for  the  first  timer  15-20  babys  will  be  come  outside  and  swim  around  her.
 Regards

Heres  a  procedure  to  strip  fry  from  mouthbrooders
 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/stripping_fry.php
 Heres  are  some  pics

 Care  for  fry
 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/raising_fry.php

If  you  feel  that  u  can  do  it  go  ahead,  if  u  are  unsuccessful,  then  it  can  cause  a  lot  of  stress  to  the  fish  n  it'll  gulp  the  fry  soon,  isolation  into  very  small  containers  is  never  a  good  idea.
If  you  dont  want  all  this,  go  natures  way,  leave  the  fry  to  the  mom,  isolate  it  in  same  tank  with  a  divider  and  some  hideouts,  or  atleast  a  7-10  gallon  mature  tank.

The  question  is  "What  are  the  signs  to  identify  the  mbuna  has  fries  in  mouth"  cause  the  fish  look  thin  even  though  they  have  been  fed.
Not  how  to  strip  or  how  to  breed  them.  Smile

If  ever  u  have  seen  a  greedy  tilapia  that  collects  all  the  pelletized  food  in  its  mouth,  the  holding  female  mouth  brooders  should  appear  the  same.  The  space  just  below  the  lower  jaw  seems  to  be  sagging  that  appears  like  an  exposed  membrane.

Sorry  for  not  being  able  to  precisely  explain..

Dont  stripe   the  eggs  rather  than  allow  to  develop  in  natural  way  after  all  its  only  15  days  matters  and  Mbuna  females  are  very  careful.  More  over  a  experienced  mother  became  a  cichlid  producing  factory  later  on.

You  should  first  have  eggs  if  you  want  to  see  fry.  Smile
