 Hi,

i  was  just  wondering  if  i  could  do  a  diy  root  capsules  which  could  be  pushed  in  the  gravel  then  it  would  disintegrate  and  provide  nutrition  to  the  heavy  root  feeders.....   Thumb Up

what  i  intend  to  do  is  take  some  capsules  and  empty  the  medicine   and  fill  the  gelatine  casing  with  some  Macro  and  Micro  nutrients  mixed  in  dry  form  and  then  push  this  in  the  gravel  ....

 My  questions  ???

1  What  should  i  use  as  a  filling  will  powder  chelated  iron  and  Microsol  b  do
2  in  what  quantity  should  i  mix  the  above  mentioned  nutrients?
3  an  possible  mishapps  that  you  experts  forsee???

pls  do  give  your  valuable  thoughts  on  the  subject  will  definately  help  bro   Smile

Bad  idea.  The  capsules  will  disintegrate  in  short  order  and  release  all  the  nutrients  in  one  go.  DIY  jobe  sticks  are  a  better  option.  Search  the  forum  for  a  previous  thread.

Go  through  this.  Read  here  about  fertilizer  bombs.

One  of  the  recent  imports  that  have  shown  positive  results.

Iam  not  sure  who  this  will  work???  Once  the  shell  dissolves  all  the  fert  inside  will  in  contact  with  water  and  dissolve.  What  we  have  here  is  a  delayed  release  and  not  a  slow  release.

No  expert.  Smile  The  very  slow  and  steady  continuous  release  of  the  ferts  to  the  plant  roots  is  the  one  major  hurdle.
If  your  DIY  can  achieve  this  there  is  nothing  like  it.  Thumb Up

Iam  not  an  expert  in  planted  tanks  but  have  anyone  of  you  tried  this???

Get  some  air  tube  of  desired  length.  Seal  one  end  of  the  tube.  Make  a  mesh  by  zig  zaging  or  (lose  coiling)  the  tube  on  the  base  of  the  tank  bellow  the  substrate.  The  other  end  must  be  long  enough  to  reach  above  the  water  level  of  the  tank.  Make  as  many  tiny  pin  holes  possible  on  the  tube  they  is  on  the  base  of  the  tank.  Cover  the  tube  with  your  substrate  of  choice.  Connect  the  open  end  of  the  tube  to  a  air  flow  controller  and  a  reservoir  (may  be  a  glass  bottle)  containing  the  fertilizer  mix  in  liquid  form.  Adjust  the  dripping  as  required.  Won't  this  release  the  fert  in  a  controlled  manner  to  the  bottom  of  the  substrate???  I  use  something  similar  to  do  my  auto  topoff.  Some  of  you  planted  tank  experts  with  a  DIY  inclination  can  try  this  method  and  see  how  it  goes.

This  looks  like  a  really  genius  idea  however  it  might  be  difficult  to  get  the  liquid  to  come  out  of  the  tube  holes  without  adequate  pressure  being  applied  from  the  other  end   Very Happy

 Ilango,
Your  idea  is  certainly  innovative  but  that  might  not  be  required  for  many  aquatic  plants.
Plants  like   Echinodorous  sp.  which  are  known  to  be  heavy  root  feeders  will  benefit  from  this. There  may  be  other  species  too  which  I  do  no  know  of.
But  aquatic  plants  are  known  to  absorb  dissolved  nutrients  thru  the  water  column.
So  adding  the  ferts  to  the  water  column  could  be  easier.

It  is  basic  fluid  dynamics  dear.  As  long  as  the  bottle  is  above  the  water  level  of  the  tank  and  the  siphon  is  not  broken  the  fert  mix  will  flow  to  the  tank.  How  effectively  will  it  be  distributed  is  completely  another  question.

As  I  said  earlier  Iam  not  an  expert  on  planted  tanks,  I  was  just  trying  to  give  a  solution  for  what  the  poster's  (rupak)  problem  which  was  regulated  release  of  fert.
