Today  when  I  stepped  into  the  aquarium  room  and  switched  on  the  two  hitachi  lamps  to  give  Tetra  Bits  to  thE  fishes,  one  of  the  ballasts  suddenly  made  a  loud, bursting  sound.  Surprised  Then  a  kind  of  gas  started  to  come  out  of  the  ballasts.   Shocked  The  ballasts  are  situated  under  the  hood,  pinned  tightly  to  the  pillars  of  my  hood. However,  1  hour  has  elapsed  now  and  the  tubes  are  lit  fine  and  there  is  no  gas  coming  out  of  that  ballast. The  ballasts  are  Philips  Sumo  Electronic  Ballast. Now  can  it  cause  problems  like  fire  breakout  etc  or  will  it  be  okey  ?  For  what  can  be  the  problem  ?  One  clue  I  can  give  to  you  is  that  our  water  pump  of  the  house  was  on.Previously  2  P/Filters  have  gone  out  because  of  switching  'em  on  and  of  when  the  pump  was  on.Can  this  be  the  same  case  for  the  ballast  ????  HELP   !

 Hi,

This  has  happened  with  me  also.  This  happens  when  wires  etc.  gain  moisture  and  when  you  turn  on  it  then  creates  this  situation.  What  I  have  done  is  that  I  have  put  a  lot  of  tape  on  the  lights  connecting  points  and  its  all  okay  for  last  2  years  now.

 Thanks

 I  agree  with  deepesh
Ballasts  need  to  be  outside  the  hood  out  of  contact  of  moisture/water.
And  yes  you  could  have  a  serious  electric  problem.
