But the problem is, in most tanks, either there is no female or too much competition.
This reminds me of my engineering collegae days. I was from Telecom branch of engineering, And a friend of mine, Infact a very close friend of mine till my engineering was in Mechanical engineering branch.

Descriptions on fish personalitles for me are always with a pinch of salt. I have had Tiger Brbs who have been the most docile and Angels who have been perfect tyrants.
I used to have a small tank in office and after a lot of thought put in 2 pairs of Zebra danios. They are supposed to be peacefull but i put in 4 rowdys, they used to fight and nip at each other so much!

The four rowdy Zebra danio's must have sensed you were a soft willing guy and tried to impress you with their need.
IMHO they were trying to tell you that they needed to pair off and you had not put in the correct combination.

Trevor's taken the discussion off to a whole new tangent. Now, now, calm down boys... Let's fact it, a woman lives in close proximity with her MA-IN-LAW far more than the man with his MA-IN-LAW. For generations, men have escaped this kind of hmm.... *thinks of a nice word* "interaction".
Anyway, I agree with the general opinion of this post about not mixing. There is this story I heard of a guy who would keep angels and neon tetras in the same tank, and they grew up together, and the angels wldnt touch the neons. One day he went to the fish store and saw neons being eaten by angels and told the LFS fellow that his angels wld do no such thing.
The LFS guy was obviously shocked, and went to the guy's house to verify this and found it to be true. He then went and got one of the neons from the shop and added it to the angel-neon tank. The new neon saw the angels and panicked, and guess what, this triggered the angels hunting instinct and soon all the neons were happily devoured.
Moral of the story - incompatible species will always remain incompatible, and it's just a matter of time
