 Hi  all

My  convict  fry  have  become  free  swimming.
But  they  do  not  seem  to  have  absorbed  their  yolk  sacs  fully.

 1)  When  should  I  start  feeding,  I  have  a  microworm  culture  going.
 2)  When  should  I  separate  the  fry  from  the  parents.  FYI  The  parents  are  very  protective  and  caring.
If  I  separate  the  fry,  should  I  move  the  mother  with  them  too???

 Hi  Sudhir,

 Congrats!  and  happy  parenting.

Hope  all  goes  well  for  you,  I  guess  you  can  start  feeding  when  you  see
 the  sacs  have  diapered.

Lets  see  what  others  have  to  say  about  this.

Dude  please  post  pics  if  any.

 regards

 Dan

Normally  Convicts  display  good  parental  care  and  it  is  not  necessary  to  separate  the  fries.
There  is  a  possibility  (that  I  have  read  about  )that  when  it  is  time  for  the  next  spawn  the  parents  may  eat  the  old  batch  if  they  feel  that  they  are  threat  to  the  newer  ones.
Mine  ate  away  the  fries  when  I  was  away  from  home  for  about  a  week.
 Maybe  they  were  too  hungry.

How  big  is  the  tank  and  what  are  its  inhabitants  along  with  the  convicts?

IMO  and  this  will  probably  get  conflicting  replies:

 1.  Start  feeding  the  fry  in  small  amounts  from  tomorrow/day  after.
Infusoria  is  also  good.  BBS  is  the  best  though.
 2.  Move  the  parents  out  in  a  couple  of  days.  Convict  parents  are  only  protective  until  they  want  to  breed  again.  If  the  male  is  one  of  mine,  he'll  eat  the  fry  when  he  wants  to  breed  again.
Leave  the  fry  where  they  are.  Move  the  parents  out.  Keep  the  male  and  the  female  separate  for  a  couple  of  weeks.

 thanks  Dan,

I  am  trying  to  take  pictures,  but  the  parents  get  agitated  when  I  approach  them  with  my  camera.  In  contrast,  they  do  not  mind  me  sitting  there  and  observing  the  fry.  Strange!  Smile

 Dear  Sudhir
It  will  be  better  if  you  start  feeding  after  their  yolk  sack  disappears. You  can  separate  the  frys  as  soon  as  they  are  swimming  freely  and  there  is  no  need  to  separate  their  mother  because  frys  are  smart  enough.
 Regards
 Kaushik

Convict  parents  feed  their  babies;  finely  chew  the  food  and  spit  it  on  the  cluster  of  young  ones.  This  makes  them  one  of  the  easier  cichlids  to  breed  and  raise.

The  tank  is  a  3  footer,  34  US  Gallon  tank  and  currently  has  one  female  convict  and  a  kenyii  juvenile  apart  from  the  breeding  pair  and  the  fry.  the  breeding  pair  occupy  half  the  tank  and  the  other  two  are  in  the  other  half.

@  Dan,  Rohan,  Pradeep,  Kaushik,  Shankar
 Thanks  for  your  inputs.

@  Pradeep,  indeed  the  male  is  the  one  I  got  from  you  and  so  that  makes  it  necessary  to  separate  the  fry.  And  how  much  sooner  till  the  parents  want  to  breed  again.  the  eggs  were  laid  eight  days  ago.

Eggs  laid  on  a  flat  stone.

Shot  with  flash,  did  not  seem  to  help  much.

 Nice  pics  Sudhir.
Though  I  am  little  surprised  to  see  convict  eggs  on  flat  stone.
I  always  thought  they  are  cave  spawners.

another  pic  from  today  morning,  convicts  may  be  the  easiest  fishes  to  spawn,  but  this  is  my  first  egg  layer  spawn  and  I  am  delighted  no  less!!!
