 Hi

I  am  in  Marine  Aqua  hobby.  This  weekend  I  will  be  at  Kolkata  and  the  full  saturday  (30th  Aug'0Cool  would  be  available  for  hunting  the  LFs  at  Kolkata.

I  like  to  purchase  one  'Purple  up'  for  LR  recycling.  Also,  I  like  to  see  big  Protein  skimmers  and  other  equipments.

The  Kolkata  guys  may  help  me  by  suggesting  good  LFS  /  shop  for  the  above  (with  telephone  numbers,  if  possible).  Kindly  guide  me  the  required  direction  for  reaching  the  shops.  I  will  be  staying  at  Tollygunj.

 Cheers

 Amit

AFAIK,  Splashing  Meadows  of  Beckbagan  is  one  of  the  first  Kolkata  LFS  to  venture  into  marine.  I  heard  the  owners  of  that  shop  are  hobbyists  themselves  who  set  up  their  first  marine  aquarium  as  early  as  in  the  late  1970s!

Price  of  equipment  is  reasonable,  though  not  the  cheapest  you  can  get.  However,  they  stand  by  the  products  they  sell  and  will  replace  if  defective  (rare).

Price  of  livestock  is  ridiculously  high.  But  in  their  defense  --  they  claim  they  sell  quarentined,  stable  fish  and  take  the  hit  of  weak  specimens  (transport  shock)  dying  in  their  tanks  instead  of  hobbyists'.  It  does  seem  that  way,  because  I  have  heardly  ever  seen  unhealthy  fish  in  their  tanks.

I  forget  their  landline  number  but  Uday  Banerjee,  the  owner,  can  be  reached  at  98310  64219.  Before  taking  the  trouble  of  going  there  it  may  be  a  good  idea  to  call  him  first  to  find  out  if  they  at  all  stock  what  you  are  looking  for.

 Hi  Kaushik

Nemo's  World  is  actually  on  Lake  View  Road,  however  --  you  could  go  there  from  Gariahat.  From  Gariahat  take  RasBihari  Road  towards  Kalighat  and  then  turn  laft  on  the  lane  adjascent  to  the  sweet  shop  Jugal's  which  will  be  on  your  left.

FWIW,  I  had  a  frustrating  experience  at  Nemo's  World,  it  appeared  to  me  they  had  big  plans  when  starting  out  but  it  ended  in  a  whimper.  Didn't  look  like  they  have  the  confidence  of  stocking  anything  more  than  clowns  and  damsels.  Their  freshwater  display  "planted"  tank  looked  sad  and  collection  of  fish  is  no  better  than  typical  hole-in-the-wall  LFS  you  find  on  every  other  street.  Add  to  that  their  reluctance  to  talk  and  sell,  they  seem  kind  of  offended  when  you  look  for  something  they  don't  stock  (which  is  most  everything).  However  --  all  this  is  entirely  my  personal  experience,  YMMV.

 Hi  Kaushik,

I  do  not  happen  to  know  Avijit  Chatterji  but  by  any  chance  are  you  talking  about  the  two  shops  on  opposite  sides  of  the  street  in  Entally?  Even  if  not  so  --  thanks  for  reminding!  ...  Amit:  another  two  stores  are  in  Entally  --  Anami  Aquarium  and  Fancy  Fish  Stores.

Anami  Aquarium  do  not  stock  marine  livestock  but  has  some  equipment.  Very  reasonable  price  and  good  customer  relationship/service.

Fancy  Fish  Stores  is  across  the  street  from  Anami  and  is  a  bigger  store  with  bigger  stock  (live/equip).  They,  however  --  have  just  a  marine  display  tank  (which  they  also  sell  from  I  reckon).

I  have  on  principle  decided  not  to  do  business  with  Fancy  Fish  Stores  again.  Before  you  guys  think  I  have  the  habit  of  fault-finding  and  getting  into  trouble  with  people  let  me  explain.  It  seems  the  owner/shopkeeper  gets  mad  (yes,  mad)  at  anyone  who  looks  for  something  he  has  never  heard  of.  This  happened  to  me  when  I  was  looking  for  Tetra  Plant  Sticks  and  also  to  my  friend  Bodhayan  who  went  there  for  the  second  time  in  his  life  (note:  repeat  customer)  and  looked  for  Prodac  Fondo  Vivo.  Poor  Bodh  was  yelled  at  --  he  said  he  doesn't  stock  any  weird  stuff  go  look  somewhere  else.

The  last  straw  that  broke  the  camel's  back  was  my  visit  there  with  my  wife.  I  had  spotted  some  bogwoods  and  asked  price  of  each  --  they  were  in  the  150/-  to  200/-  range.  Next  time  I  took  my  wife  to  select  one  she  likes,  and  she  (naive  shopper,  BTW)  was  visibly  excited  to  see  one  I  had  also  liked  earlier  and  enthusiastically  asked  the  owner  what  the  price  was.  The  price  was  immediately  escalated  to  400/-  when  I  confronted  him  he  got  extremely  defensive  saying  he  doesn't  cheat  etc.  Finally  he  said  if  we  were  to  buy  those  we  would  have  bought  the  very  first  time  and  not  come  around  asking  price  "over  and  over  again"  and  that  next  time  we  come  and  ask  the  price  will  be  450/-.  We  immediately  exited  the  shop  and  back  into  the  sane  world  again.

 Again,  personal  experience,  YMMV.

I  have  bought  from  Fancy,  opposite  to  Anami,  found  it  to  be  good  Got  some  Killies  and  rams  and  corridoras  at  a  good  price  also  collected  a  driftwood  at  a  reasonable  price...As  Arnab  says,  YMMV.

Anami,  did  not  have  anything  of  my  interest.  Will  visit  the  other  shops  and  these  two,  next  time  I  visit  Kolkata,  for  sure.

I  keep  coming  back  ...  but  I  must  put  in  duly  deserved  good  words  for  Rocky.  He  has  a  big  collection  of  equipment,  "hardware"  and  some  nice  plants  at  his  home.  AFAIK  he  doesn't  sell  fish  but  might  be  able  to  get  if  you  ask  for.  I  bought  my  Mopani  wood,  one  Anubias  Barteri  and  one  Crinum  Calminstratum  from  him.  Highly  recommended  as  well!

Also  contact  Buro  (98369  80720)  --  his  modest  LFS  belies  what  he  can  supply.  @Rana:  Thanks  for  hooking  me  up  with  Buro!

 Dear  Arnab
No.no  ,  I'm  not  talking  about  Entally  Muchipatty's  two  shops.  I’m  talking  about  Avijit  Chatterjee's  resident  come  fish  house  in  Maniktala.  2  years  before  I  saw  a  lot  of  marine  livestock  in  his  house.
I  totally  agree  with  you  that  in  Kolkata  hobbyist  are  sailing  their  boats  with  their  own  initiatives.  Most  of  the  LFS  and  Galif  st.  Guys  are  callus  to  promote  the  hobby.  They  never  try  to  look  beyond  the  chiklet  territory   Smile

 Dear  Amit

Visit  Splashing  meadows. That  is  probably  the  only  shop  to  have  huge  collection  of  marine  and  freshwater  fish  .They  also  keep  a  very  wide  variety  of  all  dry  items  .The  prices  are  also  reasonable  .The  landline  number  is  033-2280-9021.The  proprietor  Sri  Uday  Banerjee  is  very  helpful.

This  is  the  only  shop  in  calcutta   who  sell  real  quality  marine  fish

I  stay  close  to  three  of  the  shops  mentioned,  that  is,  Fancy,  Anami  and  Splashing  Meadows,  and  my  vote's  with  Splashing  Meadows.  He  is  the  best  of  the  lot  by  far.  Nemo's  as  someone  pointed  out  is  poorly  stocked.  Even  I  had  rushed  to  see  the  shop  after  seeing  some  pics  of  the  place  on  the  web  and  came  back  very  disappointed.  Since  you  are  coming  on  a  Saturday,  if  you  could  extend  your  stay  for  one  day  you  could  visit  Galiff  Street  for  the  weekly  haat  which  is  conducted  in  the  mornings.  No  marine  fishes  there,  unfortunately.
I  haven't  visited  Rocky's  place  yet  but  plan  to  do  so  soon.  He  seems  well  stocked  with  hardware  and  plants.
