I  am  planning  to  coat  a  panel  of  wood  with  epoxy  or  fibreglass  resin  to  prevent  water  dampening.  This  is  in  the  store.  I  would  like  to  know  if  there  will  be  any  harm  caused  to   fishes  in  other  tanks  in  the  same  room  because  of  fumes  etc.  I  have  about  40  tanks  in  all.  Fully  stocked.

Epoxy  resin  if  properly  cured  is  pretty  cool.  I  have  coated  the  underside  of  my  hood  with  epoxy.  It  does  stink  a  bit  while  curing  but  should  do  ok.  Ofcourse  with  40  tanks  you'd  better  be  safe  than  sorry!!

just  remember,  if  not  cured  properly  it  will  leach  chemicals  when  splashed  with  water.

Also  in  your  case  its  a  wooden  hood  you  can  use  a  spirit  based  epoxy  thinner  along  with  a  clear  epoxy  paint  to  coat  the  hood.  I  made  my  hood  with  Depron  so  I  had  to  use  denatured  alcohol  to  thin  the  epoxy.

Also  use  a  nylon  bristle  brush  and  use  the  thinner.  The  coating  will  be  much  smoother  and  you  can  do  multiple  coats  (cure  each  coat).  be  patient  since  epoxt  resin  takes  24  hrs  +  to  cure  properly.

 Hi  Tango,

My  major  worry  is  the  fumes  affecting  the  other  tanks  on  the  opposite  and  side  walls.  It  is  not  exactly  a  hood  but  part  of  the  pseudo-wall  in  the  store.  The  insides  of  which  have  been  roughed  up  by  my  frontosas.  I  have  moved  them  out  and  plan  to  convert  this  into  a  planted  tank  again,  with  the  possibility  of  having  terrestrial  plants  as  well.  I  plan  to  install  a  few  misters  to  care  of  the  terrestrial  plants.  But  with  constant  misting,  the  wood  is  going  to  collapse.  Hence  the  epoxy  coat.

No  fish  in  the  tank  till  all  my  work  is  done  (at  least  2  months  from  now).  But  the  question  of  the  fumes  is  still  the  major  worry.

Can  someone  suggest  good  brands  of  Epoxy?  I  am  not  sure  whether  Depron  is  available  here.

 Hi  Trevor,

I  have  been  through  the  post  umpteen  number  of  times  now.  It  still  does  not  answer  my  question  about  the  risks.  Will  the  fumes  affect  fishes  in  the  remaining  tanks  of  the  room.  The  overall  room  is  about  300  sft  with  the  closest  tanks  about  5'-6'  away.

The  ¬†fumes  will  knock  humans  and  fish  if  you  are  not  careful.
You  have  to  operate  in  a  well  ventilated  area  and/or  provide  an  air  draft  from  a  strategically  placed  fan.
The  nose  and  mouth  was  covered  like  a  pirate.
I  saw  the  Mrs.  also  on  the  job  of  painting  so  if  you  take  the  right  precautions  this  painting  of  epoxy  is  no  big  deal.

Ask  for  Epoxy  paint....  comes  in  2  parts  and  is  a  whole  lot  cheaper  than  araldite,  with  the  same  characteristics.

As  someone  mentioned,  open  windows/  doors  &  ventilation  would  make  it  cool.
