 Hi,

I  was  just  doing  some  maintenance  work  and  I  removed  the  heater  out  of  water  and  kept  it  outside.  It  was  still  plugged  in  but  as  its  indicator  lights  were  off,  I  assumed  that  it  was  off  and  I  kept  it  outside  and  was  carrying  on  my  work  when  I  suddenly  saw  some  smoke  behind  my  tank.  The  protective  covering  made  of  plastic  of  the  heater  has  melted  away.  This  is  a  Sera  150  Watt  heater.  The  topmost  covering  with  the  sucker  caps  still  exists.  The  auto  stat  had  turned  off  and  I  had  assumed  that  it  was  off.  It  was  within  a  minute  of  keeping  it  outside  that  this  happened.  THere  is  no  damage  to  the  heater,  only  the  external  covering.

 Two  questions

 1.  Do  we  need  a  protective  cover  compulsorily  (as  I  have  seen  shrimps  and  fishfry  etc  getting  inside  and  still  remaining  unhurt)
 2.  Where  can  I  find  an  alternative  or  what  can  I  use  as  an  alternative?

Thanks  for  your  inputs,  if  there  any  additional  precautions  /  care  that  I  have  to  take  generally  while  using  a  heater,  please  educate  me  on  that  as  well.

 Thanks

I  would  suggest  not  to  use  that  heater  again  ...  since  you  never  really  know  whats  the  extent  of  the  damage,  it  could  lead  to  Current  Leakage  in  the  water  as  well.  Plus  if  your  thermostat  malfunctions  and  fails  to  cutoff  then  you  will  have  seafood  soup

Also  in  Bangalore  heater  is  not  really  a  necessity  .....  i  have  never  used  a  heater  in  my  tanks  except  once  when  there  was  a  breakout  of  Ich  in  the  tank.  But  if  you  still  want  to  have  a  heater  buy  a  new  one  instead.

 Thanks  Seetharam,

The  thermostat  is  working  fine  and  so  is  the  heating.  I  checked.  The  extent  of  damage  was  very  minimal  as  it  was  outside  for  a  very  short  duration  and  the  only  damage  is  the  melting  of  removable  external  plastic  covers  which  is  probably  to  keep  the  fish  from  direct  contact  with  the  heater  glass.  There  is  also  no  current  discharge  into  the  water.  I  want  to  know  whether  this  external  plastic  cover  is  necessary  and  also  if  this  is  in  such  a  good  shape  then  where  can  I  get  a  cover.

A  DIY  idea  exists  where  I  can  take  a  thin  plastic  pipe  and  cut  holes  into  it  for  water  flow  and  try  and  fit  it,  but  that  should  not  look  unsightly  either.

I  am  currently  not  using  anything  but  would  like  to  keep  this  handy  /  ready.

If  you  are  talking  about  the  thin  plastic  layer  on  the  Glass  of  the  heater  then  its  not  an  issue  if  its  not  there.

Most  heaters  (e.g.  atman  etc)  does  not  even  have  the  external  casing.  Inside  the  water,  I  dont  think  the  glass  gets  that  hot.  None  of  my  heaters  have  that  outer  plastic  cover.

Wokay,  that  is  what  I  was  talking  about.  I  will  however  try  the  DIY,  now  to  look  for  the  thinnest  guage  pipe  I  can  find  and  then  use  a  cutting  wheel  to  make  cuts  in  the  pipe  and  fit  it.

 DIY  -  way  to  go.
