i  had  earlier  sought  help  from  u  all  regarding  my
 convicts.actually  i  had  made  a  mistake.the  pink  convict
is  the  female.the  problem  is  that  even  this  time, all  the
eggs  turned  white.i  had  another  striped  convict  with  a
pink  belly.i  am  not  sure  whether  the  striped  convict
is  the  male  or  not.just  wanted  to  know  some  important
 things-

1.can  the  pink  convict  go  on  laying  eggs,or  is  it
necesary  for  them  to  mate  everytime  and  then  lay  eggs.

2.if  the  striped  convict  is  also  a  female, the  pink
one  should  have  shown  some  aggresion.there  is  nothing
like  that  in  this  case.the  pink  one  seems  to  be  very
 gentle  towards  it.

3.how  much  time  does  it  take  for  the  eggs  to  hatch.

4.all  around  my  aquarium,u  can  see  some  pits  dug.why  do
they  dig  such  pits.can  anyone  tell  me.

5.what  should  be  the  surroundings  like,so  that  the  eggs  would
hatch  properly.this  time,i  had  covered  the  whole  aquarium  with
a  piece  of  cloth.even  then  the  eggs  turned  white.

6.when  does  the  male  fertilize  the  eggs  and  how?  does  it  happen
soon  after  the  eggs  are  laid,or  afterwards?

 7.what  about  the  filter.i  have  a  corner  filter.should  i  keep  it
on  after  the  eggs  are  laid?  and  the  light.should  i  turn  it  off?
if  anyone  can  help  me  out,i  would  appreciate  it.
the  convict  had  laid  eggs  four  times, but  i  failed  to  save  it.
u  can  take  my  email  id.its  hrishi.baruah  [at]  gmail  [dot]  com.

 1.  They  will  lay  eggs  only  when  a  male  mates  with  them.  And  it  is  necessary  for  the  male  to  mate  while  the  female  is  laying  eggs  in  order  to  fertilize  them.  In  a  small  percentage  two  females  will  lay  eggs  thinking  the  other  one  is  the  male.

 2.  Aggression  not  necessary  for  same  sex.   At  the  same  time  aggression  can  be  there  in  different  sexes  too.

 3.  Usually  around  3-4  days

 4.  Pits  are  the  nesting  sites.  They  will  do  it.

 5.  Egg  hatching  does  not  depend  on  the  surroundings.

 6.  At  the  same  time  as  the  eggs  get  laid

 7.  Yes,  filters  must  be  on,  lights  can  be  on.

If  the  eggs  do  not  hatch  you  may  have  two  females  or  the  male  is  sterile  (usually  happens  with  hormones  in  food/added  in  water).

the  pink  one  lays  the  eggs...anyways  thanks..

 Hi  Rishi,

Sriram  (Cichlidlover)  is  perfectly  correct.  My  guess  is  you  have  two  females,  friend.

Do  not  fret  regarding  new  post  in  the  correct  forum.  The  Mods  or  Admins  will  take  care  of  it.

 Regards,
 Nayak.

 Topic  moved.

 Agree  with  Sriram.
You  could  be  having  two  females.
Do  you  see  a  orangish  color  on  the  belly  of  the  striped  convict?  Then  it  sure  is  a  female  in  its  breeding  colors.

nuthing  unusual  with  females  laying  eggs  when  only  females  are  there,  this  is  quite  normal  with  ca/sa  chiclids  atleast.  thats  the  reason  when  you  set  up  a  chiclid  only  tank  only  males  are  kept  to  avoid  such  reasons  for  increase  in  aggression.

only  female  convict  immaterial  of  pink  or  striped  have  the  orangish  spray  on  their  bellies  with  a  little  hue  of  green  and  blue  on  the  dorsal  fin

the  male  is  just  plain  colored,  no  blue  hues  on  the  dorsal  or  no  orange  spray  on  the  belly,  hope  this  helps

 @hrishi007
 please  update  your  location  info...

The  male  will  NOT  have  the  orangish  coloration  on  the  belly.  The  female  will  HAVE  the  coloration.
The  male  cichlids  usually  have  a  pointed  fin,  more  so  than  the  females.

Whats  the  purpose  of  the  glass  partition?  Are  you  trying  to  keep  them  from  breeding  for  some  time?  Do  you  want  to  grow  them  out  or  condition  them?

Whats  the  size  of  the  tank  that  you  are  trying  to  partition?

its  a  small  tank  less  than  2  feet..when  i  removed  the  partition, the  female  pink  convict  bullied  the  other  striped  convict  which  was  a  male...any  suggestions  what  i  should  do.the  male  convict  is  smaller  than  the  pink  convict..
