Hi,
I got some platies and guppies recently and had a lot of fries from a couple of females this morning. Unfortunately couldnt save a lot from the platy lot but a lot from guppy were saved.
Now they are in a 22 Lt plastic tub in my balcony with some floating plants.
I have the following Queries, please help me out
1. Since its outside a lot of temperature fluctuations would be there. Should I shift them indoors?
2. What to feed them right now? I have given crushed pellets sometime back and they were nibbling on it. When can i start giving frozen worms and which ones?
3. Any other caring instructions.
I dont want them to die this time. Lost a lot of molly fries once due to inexperience

have them indoors,
give them crushed pellets, after 2-3 weeks u can start introducing frozen foods,
BTW how many fry do u have in the 22ltr tub??
also perform water changes of 10-20% daily,
better start with microworms and BBS,
live food+daily w/c=fast and colourful growth of fry |

May I ask, why you keep them outdoor, since you know that there will be lots of temperature fluctuations?
just keep them in the same room where you keep the mother tank. that way the water temperature will be almost the same as the mother tank (I'm assuming that you are not using any temperature control device [heather or chiller] in the mother tank).
Actually you can keep them outdoors, but provide them some shade, not direct sunlight. if you can produce green water, that is also good for growing fries. I find that fish grow in green water is much healthier that fish grow in clear water......anyway that's off topic :D
I feed mine algae wafers, crushing or not, they will still able to nibble on what ever pellets you feed.
but of course feeding something small that fits their mouth size is the best option. if you have BBS and microworm, that will do fine. if you can collect moina or daphnia from the wild that would be excellent!
as for filtration, in my experience, aged or established sponge filter will do fine. there will be lots of microorganism that your fries can nibble on.
good luck in raising the fries |

@ Mudassir
There are around 25-28...couldnt save the rest from the parents...will do regular changes as suggested...I dont have a bigger container to keep them...is 22 Lt too small?
@ borneosucker
All my tanks are outside on balconies...a 600 Lt pond for goldies and lot of small tubs containing guppies and platies....the temperature doesnt fluctuate a lot in bangalore at this time of the year but if its helpful then I can keep them inside...
Thanks a lot for all the suggestions.... |

HI SID,
YES KEEPING 'EM INSIDE 'LL HELP U TAKE CARE OF 'EM BETTER..
I AM NO EXPERT ..BUT DAILY WC IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.. CHANGE ONLY IF REQ.
U CAN GO FOR TUBIFLEX WORMS AS WELL WITH THE PELLETS. JST ADD A SMALL PIECE; AS WATER SOAK IN, IT 'LL GET SOFT BY ITSELF.

Mudassir,
I am doing 15-20 per W/C daily. And remove all the uneaten powdered pellets with that too.
The thing is I dont notice them eating a lot. Is is ok or something is wrong?
There are around 25 of them in a 22 Lt wide mouthed tub with some floating plants. I have shifted them indoors to avoid temp fluctuations.
When can I start giving frozen worms? how about feeding boiled egg yolk? |

Hey Sid,
If there are 25 fries in your tank...Dont feed them too many pellets....How I do it is like a pellet for 2 fries...So around 12 - 14 pellets would be apt for your fries....Just monitor their eating habits... If you feed 14 pellets in the morning and you see that there are several pellets still in the tank in the evening...Dont feed them in the evening...You will see that most of the pellets would be devoured by morning...This would be better rather than remove the uneaten pellets...But keep doing the WC's religiously.... It should be ok to feed them egg yolk once they get a little bigger... |

Sid,
You are going the right way with daily WC. Maintaining pristine water condition is very important for newborn frys.
Just give them crushed dry food which you give to their parents. Other better dryfood option is Hikari First Bites which is specially meant for such frys.
Livebearer frys don't demand much except good water quality, proper aeration & little food.
All the best!! |
