 Hi

I  just  wanted  to  know  if  any  of  you  have  any  pictures  of  the  Luftwafee  MESSERSCHMITT  BF109E-1/B  which  was  placed  in  the

"The  Royal  Air  Force  sent  the  aircraft  to  India  as  a  gift  for  the  Nizam  of  Hyderabad  in  appreciation  for  his  funding  of  two  squadrons.  The  Nizam  —  then  one  of  the  world’s  richest  men  —  placed  the  trophy  in  a  public  park.

When  the  Nizam’s  land  was  annexed  by  the  newly  independent  India,  ownership  of  the  aircraft  was  assumed  by  the  state  government.  In  1961  the  fighter  was  transferred  to  a  local  engineering  college.  "Gulbarga's  PDA  College  of  Engineering"

It  remained  there  until  it  was  spotted  in  1997  by  Laxman  Anataramu,  an  aircraft  enthusiast.

Then  Suddenly  it  was  Lost  until  it  was  found  to  be  registered  with  one  Aero  Company  in  Channel  Islands  Jersey  UK....

Any  way  I  was  posting  to  see  if  any  of  our  Members  in  remember  seeing  such  an  Aircraft  and  if  any  body  has  any  pictures  of  it  other  than  what  we  already  have  as  in  the  above  mention  posts...Specially  if  there  is  any  picture  of  it  while  it  was  in  the  Public  Park  (  Which  Park  ?)  or  while  it  was  in  the  college...so  that  the  correct  markings  can  be  looked  at  ...

Some  more  information  on  this  aircraft  :-

"The  aircraft  was  gifted  to  the  Nizam  of  Hyderabad  by  the  Royal  Air  Force  of  Britain  in  return  for  funding  two  RAF  squadrons  in  1941.  The  aircraft,  which  was  placed  in  Secunderabad  for  public  viewing,  was  later  was  shifted  to  Gulbarga,  which  was  also  under  the  Nizam's  rule.  For  several  years  it  was  kept  in  the  Mehboob  Shahi  Gulshan  Garden  here.

The  then  Gulbarga  Municipality  allowed  the  aircraft  to  be  shifted  to  the  Poojya  Doddappa  Appa  College  of  Engineering  in  the  late  1950s  or  early  1960s  for  the  benefit  of  students.  "

Any  IAH  members  from  Secunderabad  who  might  have  seen  ths  pictures  or  the  actual  MESSERSCHMITT  BF109E-1/B  ?

If  you  have  any  extra  information  or  pictures  please  let  me  know.

 Thanks  and  Regards

 Sujoy

 Very  interesting  piece  of  History.

Thanks  Sujoy  for  bringing  this  up.  Being  a  WW  enthu  will  be  following  this  thread.

 From  what  I  know,

Gulbarga  is  a  district  in  northern  Kanataka,  right  in  the  center  of  Deccan  plateau.  It  is  still  known  as  Hyderabad  Karnataka,  Since,  as  Sujoy  mentioned  it  was  part  of  the  erstwhile  Hyderabad  state  under  the  Nizam.  But  it  was  and  still  is  believed  to  be  lacking  in  development  compared  to  the  rest  of  Karnataka.   That  the  district  had  an  Engineering  college  in  1950's  is  a  bit  of  surprise.  Will  have  to  re-search  a  bit.

Also   MESSERSCHMITT  BF109E-1/B  was  the  pride  of  German  Luftwaffe  under  Hermann  Goering.  Being  so  desperate  and  lacking  in  resource  during  1941,  that  Britain  became  magnanimous  to  donate  a  full  fledged  MESSERSCHMITT  BF109E-1/B  to  the  stingy  Nizam,  and  that  the  Nizam  donated  money  for  any  cause  is  truly  astounding.  There  is  an  famous  anecdote  regarding  the  Nizam  that  when  the  citizens  of  his  domain  were  perishing  from  malnutrition  during  a  drought,  the  said  ruler  considered  as  one  of  the  richest  man  in  the  world  during  those  times,  had  a  full  treasury  which  was  being  depleted  by  rats  eating  the  printed  currency  stored  there.  Mind  you,  it  is  only  an  anecdote  though.

Will  try  to  get  more  details  regarding  the  fighter,  Sujoy.

 Regards,
 Nayak.

 Hi  Nayak,

 Thanks  for  the  help...

More  Recent  Discussions  are  at  this  forum:-

 http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=14146

The  reason  I  wanted  to  know  the  details  is  because  I  am  also  an  aircraft  modeling  enthuast  and  wated  to  do  a  modeling  on  the  Me109's  and  then  It  came  upon  me  to  model  this  aircraft  on  the  Nizam's  Lost  Me109-E1/B.

 http://www.eduard.cz/products/card_main.php?id_product=6113&name=&catalogue_nb=&type=4&pgroup=1&scale=5&product_month=&product_year=&page_start=0

So  I  wanted  to  know  more  of  how  the  Aircraft  looked  while  it  was  in  India  speciall  when  it  was  in  the  Public  Display...

Any  body  from  Secunderabad  willing  to  provide  some  information  Pictures  please  ...?

 Regards

 Sujoy

Wow!  Great  to  find  more  WW2  enthusiasts  and  aircraft  modelling  hobbyists  here!  Coincidentally,  I  have  been  looking  to  get  back  into  modelling  over  the  past  2  weeks!

Sorry  I  can't  help,  Sujoy.  What  a  beautiful  aircraft  it  was,  eh?  Lovely  lines.  The  only  one  that  compares  to  it  (and  possibly  beats  it,  but  thats  a  personal  opinion)  is  the  Spitfire.  Beauties!

Anyway,  best  of  luck  with  your  search-  I  too  will  be  following  this  thread.

Im  not  a  Aero-modelling  hobbiest,  but  im  an  enthu  for  sure  Rock On

 Hey  Sujoy,

You  could  look  into  Orkut  forum  of  "Hyderabadi  Photograpgers"  and  other  similar  ones.
and  also  community/forum  of  that  particular  college.

 BTW  Sujoy,
"Any  body  from  Secunderabad  willing  to  provide  some  information  Pictures  please  ...?  "
by  asking  so  you  want  to  target  people  above  60yrs??

Or  you  mean  the  aircraft  may  be  still  somwehere{where?}  in  Sec-bad  or  pictures  of  it  in  some  museum.

 Goodluck.
 Keep  us  updated.

 Hi  Saikumar,

This  Me109E-1/B  Black  '6'  +  I,   belonged  to  the  8./JG  53  Squadron  of  the  Luftwaffe  based  at  France  and  crashed  landed  on  2nd  November  1940  almost  intact,  subsiquently  by  Sept  1941  It  was  send  to  the   Nizam  Of  Hydrabad  and  then  displayed  at  the  public  park.

 See  this  link  -->
"Article  on  The  Deccan  Chronicle  ,  Hyderbad  Sept  28  1941  Sunday..."

I  was  looking  around  to  see  if  anybody  has  the  picture  of  the  aircraft  while  it  was  at  display  in  India...
I  will  post  at  Orkut  and  see  as  well  ....

 Thanks  for  your  help

 Regards
