 Hey  hi  everyone..

             Its  been  6  months  since  i  setup  my  first  s/w  aquarium  and  things  are  going  good  upto  date,  thanks  to  this  website.  Now  i  have  a  small  issue  with  the  lighting.

             My  current  lighting  setup  is:  2  X  36Watts  CFL
                                                                         2  X  24Watts  Actinic

               But  i  know  this  lighting  aint  enough  for  a  reef  tank..  The  Corals  looks  lik  they  r  not  getting  enough  light.  So  i  was  planning  to  jump  to  metal  halide.  I  was  thinkin  abt  a  150Watts  10k  or  14k  MH  but  the  problem  is  i  dont  have  a  chiller  and  is  it  Possible  to  fix  a  metal  halide  without  Chiller  in  CHENNAI  ??  i  was  thinkin  it  would  b  possible  if  the  tank  is  without  the  top.  So  i  thought  this  is  the  right  place  to  ask..  It  would  be  really  nice  anyone  can  help  me  out.

 Thanks

 It's  possible  without  the  roof..  Keep  the  lamp  12"  or  more  from  the  surface..  Fans  should  help  keep  the  tank  cool..

 Hi,
 Just  my  opinion,  since  yours  is  not  a  very  deep  tank,  have  you  thought  about  T5,  they  run  cooler  than  MH  and  you  can  keep  pretty  much  anything  that  you  can  keep  under  MH.  Also  you  can  mix  and  match  different  spectrum  to  get  amazing  colours.  The  bulbs  are  pretty  cheap  too  than  MH.  They  are  cheaper  on  electricity  too.  If  I  were  you  I  would  go  with  T5's.  C

 Also  if  you  are  going  to  keep  acros,  you  need  good  flow  and  prestine  water.  What  skimmer  do  you  have?  Skimmer  is  the  most  important  piece  of  equipment  if  you  are  going  to  keep  acros.

 i  hav  a  weipro  2011  and  currently  i  hav  13x  waterflow  in  my  tank  (2x5000lph  &  1x3000lph).  Do  we  get  T5's  here  in  Chennai  ??  if  so  where  ??  Any  idea  about  the  cost  ??

 Hi,

 You  Can  Drill  holes  and  fix  fans  on  the  Ply  that  is  supporting  the  MH  structure.  This  should  keep  the  temp  at  around  28-30deg.

 Well  i  am  100%  certain  that  you  get  T5's  in  Chennai,  most  good  electric  shops  would  have  it  from  Philips,  havels  and  orpat.  They  come  in  6500K.  However  the  higher  spectrum  in  14000K  and  20000K  may  only  be  available  in  MH's.

 With  the  corals  that  you  have  ,  some  of  them  need  high  lighting  in  the  higher  kelvins  to  see  them  really  grow.

 @gremlin

 Which  part  of  the  country  are  you  from  ?  with  400W  of  MH's  in  peak  summers  keeping  the  tank  at  27,  you  must  be  in  a  very  cold  place  where  the  outside  temperature  dosent  go  over  35deg  or  is  it  an  A/c  room  ?

 From  where  i  am,  in  peak  summers  with  outside  temp  running   at  42-45deg  with  MH's  on  my  tank  with  FANS  would  never  stay  below  30  in  150W  MH  and  when  i  did  install  large  array  of  fans  (  6Nos  )  it  came  down  to  26-27deg  however  the  evaporation  was  more  than  25ltrs  of  water  which  swung  my  Salinity,  i  had  to  switch  off  the  fans  and  stick  to  my  chiller.

 Cheers

 Nash81  have  you  though  about  auto  top  off  unit?  I  run  my  Mh  from  3pm  to  11pm  so  It  helps  a  bit.  Also  have  coke  bottles  frozen  and  drop  them  in  the  sump  when  the  temp  get  up.  I've  posted  some  pics  of  my  corals  in  one  of  my  post  check  it  out.  I'll  post  more  when  I  get  time.

 Well  if  you  put  glass  on  top,  the  water  wont  cool,  Its  basically  the  air  blowing  on  the  surface  of  the  water  that  cools  it  down  and  evaporation  is  part  of  that  process.  3  mugs  is  about  3ltrs  of  water  i  guess.  Well  depending  on  the  humidity  in  location  you  live  the  rate  of  evaporation  may  vary.

 Since  i  live  in  delhi  and  in  the  summers  the  humidity  is  extremely  low,  there  is  a  lot  more  evaporation.  Plus  i  had  too  many  fans  installed  i  think  and  thats  what  caused  the  evaporation  to  such  a  high  extent.  However  even  with  a  chiller  my  evaporation  in  peak  summers  was  almost  5-8ltrs  a  day.

 So  the  answer  to  your  question  is  that  you  may  actually  have  more  than  3  mugs  of  evaporation  with  Fans  although  chennai  is  relatively  very  humid,  may  be  some  of  the  folks  from  chennai  who  currently  use  fans  can  give  you  a  better  answer  on  it.

 @gremlin

 I  am  actually  working  on  making  an  auto  top  off  for  myself.  Before  i  switch  to  the  fans  back  .  Have  to  figure  out  a  way  on  how  to  hook  my  RO  to  it.

 Luckly  right  now  delhi  is  pretty  cold  so  evaporation  and  stuff  is  not  something  i  am  worried  about  and  hopefully  before  the  summers  i  will  have  my  Autotop  up  worked  out.

 Warm  Regards

 ahh  get  that..  so  what  do  u  ppl  suggest  ??  shall  i  try  MH   on  the  top  i  designed   or  shall  i  just  stick  to  the  current  PCs   ??  cuz  temperature  and  evaporation  is  a  big  issue  to  me..  reasonable  change  is  ok  but  even  5liters  of  water  evaporation  everyday  is  not  feasible.

 if  you  wanna  go  for  t5,  the  28W  is  easily  available  in  pretty  much  every  electric  store.....54W  is  a  problem....but  u  get  it  in  Jain  International,  a  Phillips  dealer  in  parrys,  chennai....  1  choke  feeds  2  54W  T5  lights.....and  that  i  guess  comes  in  6500K
