How  many  of  you  have  red  tailed  cat  fishes?  What  has  been  your  experience  with  this  fish?  I  would  like  to  know  in  detail  with  regard  to  feed,  size  of  aquarium,  tank  mates  and  anyother  useful  info  that  you  can  give  me,  because  i  am  planning  to  buy  one.

Unless  you  can  make  a  12  feet  x  24  feet  x  6  feet  sized  aquarium  at  a  minimum  do  not  bother.

 Hi,

 Red  Tail  Catfish  (Phractocephalus  hemioliopterus).

Minimum  tank  requirement  for  this  would  be  a  10'  x  6'  x  5'.    Preferably  bigger.    Unless  you  have  this,  forget  about  this  fish.    This  fish  can  grow  up  to  5'  -  6'.

This  is  highly  predatory  fish  and  because  of  this  nature  combining  it  with  other  fish  is  not  advised.    If  you  want  to  have  more  fish  in  the  tank  then  have  big  robust  and  vigrous  fish.

It  is  also  quiet  difficult  to  maintain  and  needs  live  fish,  earthworms,  crabs  and  occassionally  tablets  as  feed.

Hope  this  is  useful  to  you.

Madan,    Poor  guy,  probably  he  has  a  tank  of  this  size  and  he  wants  to  keep  this  fish.  Cheer    Thumbs Up    Cheering

In  that  size  its  not  an  aquarium,  its  a  lake  and  RTCs  need  that  size  of  a  place  to  thrive.

My  intention  was  not  to  be  sarcastic.  I  was  only  being  brutally  realistic.

The  essential  info  I  know  will  come  from  other  members  of  the  list.

I  meant  to  say,  huge  fishes  like  RTC  need  tanks  at  the  size  of  small  lakes.

Come  on  smarties,  Roshith  is  a  newbie  and  probably  mean't  a  Red  tail  shark.  So  Roshith  you  go  ahead  and  buy  a  Red  tail  shark.
It  changes  to  a  dull  colour  when  frightened  and  when  the  aquarium  water  quality  is  poor.  Helps  you  to  know  when  its  time  to  change  your  aquarium  water  Smile  .  Jet  black  when  everything  is  fine.
Can  defend  themselves  against  larger  more  aggressive  fish.
 Could  be  kept  with  Cichlids.
It  should  be  kept  single  or  in  groups  of    plus  three  to  divide  the  aggression.

Trevor,  I  think  Roshith  does  mean  a  RTC...  he  posted  a  "please  ID"  thread  a  few  days  ago,  which  pointed  to  a  RTC.

Roshith,  the  others  are  spot  on...  unless  you  have  a  spare  swimming  pool  lying  around,  RTC's  are  not  for  you.

Yes,  I  meant  an  RTC  and  not  the  shark.  Am  dissappointed  that  i  can't  keep  this  beautiful  fish.  Anyway  i  have  shelved  plans  for  the  RTC.

All  i  have  is  a  6  footer  which  i  now  understand  is  not  enough.

 Thanks  for  the  help.

 Regards

 Roshith

 hi  roshith,
if  you  are  really  keen  on  having  a  rtc  ,why  not  build
a  cement  tank  for  it  in  your  backyard?if    you  have  space,
it  is  a  really  a  cheaper  option.i  built  one  of  similar  size  last
month.  if  you  really  want  to  keep  a  red  tail  cat  fish,go  ahead
 and  keep  it.where  there's  a  will,    there's  a  way.  Thumb Up

 tina.
