 Hi  all!
I  have  pond  in  our  garden  approximate  size  is  15  X  5  feet  -  2  feet  deep,  we  have  many  fish  mostly  koi  and  others.  The  water  is  green,  we  would  like  have  a  clean  water  so  that  we  can  see  the  fishes.  Setting  up  a  filter  may  be  expensive  for  the  big  pond.  Is  there  a  natural  way  to  keep  the  water  clear?  Will  Algae  eaters  help  to  clean?  I  have  uploaded  our  pond  photos  for  you  view.  Need  help.
We  have  lotus  in  our  pond  and  a  bridge  gos  across.  We  have  panted  lotus  and  plants  in  pots  and  the  bottom  has  no  soil,  just  concrete  floor.

 Thanks,
 Ravi

this  is  what  happens  to  stagnant  ponds  left  in  sunlight,  if  u  keep  a  glass  of  water  also  under  direct  sun  this  will  happen,i  was  a  pond  lover  and  i  had  two  ponds  in  my  garden  with  large  koi  fishes  about  1/2kg  in  size, the  soulution  for  u  is  ,  use  the  water  from  the  pond  to  water  the  plants  every  day  and  put  new  water,u  can  fix  a  1/2hp  motor  (even  with  the  mud  in  pond)  and  fix  a  tap  connection  to  put  new  water  ,  use  water  ffrom  the  pond  to  water  your  garden,  by  this  u  can  keep  lovely  gold  fishes  and  angels  also

doing  this  your  water  will  be  crystall  clear,  u  can  put   thin  layer  of  sand  on  top  of  the  mud  ,  to  prevent  mud  from  escaping,  but  everyday  water  changes  will  do  the  trick,  this  is  what  i  did

 Hi  Vidhyasagar,

Thanks  for  your  suggestion,  this  is  very  practical  and  I  will  try  this  out.  But  I  would  like  to  have  a  stabilized  pond  with  its  own  eco  system  and  natural  breeding  conditions.

the  water  changes  wont  affect  your  ecosystem,  if  wanna  breed  kois  ask  me,  u  need  same  size  tank  to  raise  the  fries,  they  will  have  about  10000  fries  per
spawning.  u  cannot  breed  them  by  keeping  them  just  in  a  community  pond  and  the  coming  season  is  perfect  to  breed  them  to  breed.

At  2'  feet  deep,  you  seem  to  have  very  less  water  considering  the  fact  that  the  water  line  is  about  a  foot  below  the  wall.  Raise  your  water  level,  add  some  pond  pumps  for  circulation  (one  on  either  side),  cover  the  top  with  a  shade  net  canopy  and  use  a  UV  sterilizer.  Being  directly  exposed  to  the  harsh  sunlight  of  Tirupur,  your  UV  sterilizer  is  only  going  to  be  overworked,  without  showing  results.

You  could  also  thinking  of  adding  some  bamboo  and  other  tall  plants  around  the  pond  to  provide  shade.  Helps  reduce  algae  and  provides  relief  to  your  fish  from  the  blistering  sun.

Ravi,  algae  is  there  cause  it  getting  full  sunlight  and  lots  of  food  alone.  (you  have  only  one  plant  there)  To  overcome  this  put  lots  of  plants,  you  can  plant  them  in  pots, use  some  floating  plant  which  will  block  the  sunlight,  like  duckweed.  After  all  this  done  it  will  take  some  time  to  stabilize  the  system  and  voila  you  you  wiill  have  a  no  maintenance  tank.......

but  one  min...Koi's  ....are  they  eat  plants......  ROFL

As  Suraj  has  said  .  The  depth  of  two  feet  is  a  common  mistake  committed  all  over  our  country.  The  pond  should  be  partly  shaded.  Water  circulation  is  very  important  to  have  a  living  and  thriving  pond.
No  sweat  green  water  is  good  though  unsightly.  Try  live  Daphnia  to  get  rid  of  it.

IMO  floating  plants  wont  work.  I  have  tried  duckweed  and  water  lettuce  with  Kois  and  all  got  eaten  up/ripped  apart.  You  can  give  Water  Hyacinth  a  try.
I  can  see  a  fountain  too  in  the  picture.  Is  there  motor  thats  used  to  circulate  water  in  the  pond  through  the  fountain?  If  yes,  then  the  same  motor  can  be  used  to  make  a  DIY  filter.  I  made  one  for  a  600  Lt  balcony  pond  and  it  was  very  effective.
As  others  pointed  out  a  depth  of  2  feet  is  too  less  for  Koi.  Try  filling  as  much  as  possible  and  cover  with  a  steel  mesh  to  save  the  fishes  from  any  predators.

 Hi  Suraj,
Then  what  will  stand  with  Kois,  Is  it  possible  to  have  naturally  clear  water?  If  I  get  these  plants,  I  am  planing  to  make  small  partition  in  pond  with  wire  mess  and  put  these  plants  there  to  absorb  the  excess  nutrients.
Sid  said  Water  Hyacinth  will  stand  kois?

You  could  definitely  try  hyacinth.  But  before  you  put  it  into  the  pond,  please  disinfect  it.  A  strong  mesh  can  help  growth  of  plants  on  one  side.  Hyacinth  by  itself  is  a  good  nitrate  reducer.  One  of  the  reasons  why  it  is  widespread  in  most  of  our  lakes  and  rivers  with  a  lot  of  effluents.  Provide  some  circulation.  That  small  waterfall  that  you  have  if  run  24  hours  can  also  help.

You  just  need  to  keep  topping  up  water.  Hope  you  have  raised  the  water  level  now.
