 Guys,

I  am  facing  frequent  power  problems  for  long  durations,  hope  the  same  is  with  others  too.
 My  tank  size  is  4  x  2  x  1.5,  a  malawi  setup.

I  stay  in  an  independent  house,  so  no  generator  backup.   I  have  an  inverter  which  can  provide  power  for  a  couple  of  hours,  max  3  hours.

Last  week  there  was  a  power  outage  for  the  whole  night,  and  I  lost  some  of  the  best  fishes  I  had  (some  were  2+  years  old).   I  have  two  2217s  running,  but  when  the  power  goes  off,  I  switch  off  the  canisters  as  the  inverter  will  drain  out  in  less  than  an  hour.

I  plan  to  instal  2  big  sponge  filters  (in  addition  to  the  canisters)  and  using  a  battery  operated  airpump.  Will  this  serve  the  purpose,  looking  for  your  thoughts  and  other  suggestions  if  any.

 Thanks

 Uma  Shankar

I  dont  think  2217  consumes  too  much  of  power.  Maybe  you  can  switch  off  one  of  them  and  try.  I  have  a  2217  and  if  I  keep  everything  off  except  my  aquarium  stuff  (2217,  Eheim  HOB,  a  300lph  power  head,  1  air  pump,  2x  120mm  DC  fans),  the  inverter  at  home  (800va  with  a  single  120ah  battery)  lasts  for  around  7+hours.

And  as  you  said,  having  a  battery  operated  air  pump  with  sponge  filter  is  also  a  good  option.

Most  importantly,  it  will  all  depend  on  bioload.  I  have  accidentally  switched  off  filters  for  nearly  8hours  with  no  affect  on  fishes.

 Hi  Uma  Shankar,

I  don’t  have  Idea  about  the  filters  but  for  a  battery  operated  air  pump  you  should  always  be  around  to  switch  it  on  during  power  cuts.  Instead  of  a  that  you  can  use  a  AC/DC  air  pump  which  gives  backup  up  to  3  hrs  additional  to  your  inverter  backup.

 Regards,
 -Vishwa.

one  day  on  a  similar  situation,  I  searched  the  internet  with  a  lot  of  shock  as  to  how  we  can  save  our  live  stock  on  power  outages,  as  I  don't  even  have  an  inverter!
The  only  solution  I  came  across  but  not  applicable  to  all  fishes  is  plants!  Some  plants  maintain  good  level  of  dissolved  oxygen  and  thus  help  in  the  times  of  power  outages.  But  thats  purely  GOOGLE's  take  on  power  outages!  Some  experienced  members  here  can  better  shape  this  notion

The  water  temperature  and  the  fish  dont  go  well  with  plants  for  this  setup  Aquafin.

Umashankar,  I  think  one  sponge  filter  connected  to  a  powerhead  which  retains  the  air  inlet  tube  should  take  care  of  your  tank,  and  still  not  consume  too  much  power.

You  can  pick  up  a  pretty  big  sponge  filter  and  hide  it  with  rock-work.

Same  with  me  too.  the  120  ah  single  battery  has  worked  for  a  long  time  with  fans  etc  running  and  also  the  lights  of  the  aquarium  on.

Now  the  tricky  part  is,  if  Umashankar's  2217  are  switched  off  for  the  whole  night  due  to  the  power  cut,  wouldn't  all  the  bacteria  in  the  filter  die  off  ?!  Then  when  he  switches  on  the  2217's  in  the  morning,  all  the  dead  bacteria  and  muck  is  released  inside  the  tank.  This  adds  to  the  sudden  ammonia  spike  and  can  cause  harm  to  the  fish.  Isn't  it  ?!

Why  would  you  hope  that  other  hobbyists  are  facing  the  same  problem  ?  That  is  so  mean  !   Sad

 Mortis,

By  others,  I  meant  hobbyists  in  Bangalore  who  dont  have  100%  power  backup  systems.

Vishwa:  Your  are  right,  I  would  require  a  AC/DC  airpump   Thumb Up

 Vignesh:  Thanks.   Thumbs Up

Prabhu:  When  I  switch  on  the  canister  after  a  long  time,  it  does  not  push  in  any  muck  inside  the  tank,  but  I  agree  the  good  bacteria  would  have  died  by  then   Sad  .

Umashankar,  Mortis  was  reffering  to  your  usage  of  "HOPE  the  same  is  with  others  too  "
It  totally  changes  the  meaning..........   Chuckle
I  suppose  you  meant  "  I  guess  the  same  is  with  others  too  "

Lol  no  problem.  Hope  you  are  planning  on  running  the  sponge  filters  in  the  tank  under  normal  conditions  to  build  up  the  bacterial  colony  otherwise  the  sponge  filter  will  be  of  no  use.

I  was  hoping  someone  will  give  more  info  about  that  portable  air-pump  which  runs  on  C-size  batteries.  (It  looked  local  made  (or  maybe  even  made  in  china)  and  didn't  look  very  expensive)

We  don't  have  power-cuts  in  Bombay,  so  it  will  be  a  bit  of  an  overkill  to  get  an  inverter  for  me.  But  I  would  love  to  have  this  C-Size  Battery  run  portable  battery  to  have  as  a  back-up..

It  will  also  allow  me  to  wander  farther  away  from  home  to  get  fish  for  by  newly  acquired  4  footer  :)

 Any  pointers?

 Sid
