I  have  a  planted  nano  .  Every  other  day,  I  find  one  of  those  RCS  jumped  out!

I  was  told  that  as  the  plants  are  upto  the  water  surface  this  happens.  I  have  some  floting  plants  and  those  stems  bent  on  the  surface,  to  give  the  shade  underneath  for  shrimps  and  Boraras  brigittae.

Please  suggest  some  idea  for  stopping  their  suicides!  Of  course,  the  dead  ones  become  food  for  my  other  tank's  inhabitants!

 Regards

 Tough.
 1.  Reduce  the  water  level,  doesnt  make  much  sense  in  a  nano
 2.  Make  sure  the  stem  plants  are  atleast  2  inches  below  the  water  level.
 3.  Check  out  if  you  can  get  the  lid  to  close  without  much  gap

Lid  -  I  thought  of,  but  how  about  lighting!  My  lighting  is  the  standard  one  with  curved  stands  that  sit  on  the  tank  walls!

I  was  thinking  of  trimming  the  plants  too...

 Regards

May  be  you  can  cover  the  tank  with  some  light  colured  nylon  (masquito)  net.  You  can  find  them  in  Raja  market  and  will  cost  you  abuot  20-30Rs  per  mtr.

This  usually  happens  in  new  tanks  or  in  tanks  where  the  shrimps  are  introuduced  recently.  Cover  them  for  couple  of  days  and  then  you  should  not  see  much  of  them  jumping  about.

 Hi  Prem,

They  are  there  for  more  than  4  months  now.  But  now  only  the  plants  are  creeping  up  to  the  surface!

they  would  jump  only  if  threatened  or  attacked.  i  have  a  lot  of  RCS  in  my  tank  and  the  only  time  they  jumped  out  was  when  i  had  temporarily  put  my  angel  fish  in  their  tank.

else  water  quality  might  be  to  blame.  the  shrimps  in  my  tank  hang  out  on  top  but  they  never  jump.  if  this  is  a  stray  incidence  then  you  can  ignore  it  as  we  would  never  know  what  that  isolated  shrimp  had  in  mind  before  jumping.  if  it  is  happening  too  often  then  all  shrimps  who  jumped  are  thinking  alike  and  that  means  that  something  is  not  right  in  their  tank(not  their  mind  Chuckle  )

Stems  trimmed  up;  wc  done.  Plants  are  upto  half  the  height  of  the  tank  only.  No  mishaps  so  far.

Hope  to  maintain  the  same!   Thumb Up

 Hello  Anand,

RCS  jumping  means  something  is  wrong  for  them  in  the  tank,  i  doubt  plants  reaching  to  the  surface  of  the  water  is  the  cause.

threat  with  in  the  tank,  bad  water  quality  (stick  to  weekly  40-50%  water  change),  if  you  have  co2  (diy  or  pressurized)  ensure  its  not  too  much  for  RCS....

 cheers,
 Binesh

Plants  were  the  only  ladders  for  their  suicide.  Now  all  are  under  control!  Peace...

 Hello  Anand,

So  you  are  still  doing  80%  of  water  change?

 Cheers,
 Binesh

 Hi  Binesh,

I  do  that  once  in  15  days.  That  is  all.  The  control  of  the  stems  height  and  more  growth  and  fill  up  of  E.tennulus  at  bottom,  helped  out,  it  seems.

 Regards

 Anand

i  have  a  bunch  of  cherrys  and  rainbows  in  a  10gl.  open  top  tank  with  just  some  rocks  and  plants  that  reach  the  top  all  the  way.  i  havent  seen  a  single  shrimp  of  mine  jump  out  of  the  water.

if  u  dont  mind  me  asking  why  are  u  doing  such  huge  water  changes?  to  tbh  what  i  have  noticed  is  that  they  seem  to  do  so  much  better  with  out  frequent  water  changes.  i  just  top  up  the  water  that  has  evaporated.  i  top  up  about  2  liters  every  2  to  3  days.

 cheers.

agree  with  Viresh....large  water  changes  should  be  avoided...even  if  you  do  not  want  weekly  changes  then  top  it  up  and  do  a  40-50%  change  fortnightly.

one  of  my  planted  tank  too  have  plants  almost  at  the  top  and  some  of  them  always  above  surface  but  never  had  any  shrimp  jumping  out.

i  stick  to  40-50%  water  change  weekly.

 Cheers,
 Binesh
