PostPosted: Mon Nov 29, 2010 8:57 pm Post subject: Query about keeping turtle with fishes in my aquarium Reply with quote

 Hi,
I've  purchased  a  new  aquarium.  Its  size  is  2'x1'x1'  (L  X  W  X  H).  I've  put  2  gold  fish  and  2  red  cap  in  it.  I've  also  purchased  a  turtle  from  my  aquarium  vendor.  He  has  put  the  turtle  along  with  the  fishes  in  the  aquarium.  I'm  posting  the  photo  of  my  aquarium  and  the  turtle.

 http://picasaweb.google.com/kool.khan/MyAquarium?authkey=Gv1sRgCJrNnIHrxPbgzAE#

 Now  I  have  these  queries

 1.  Is  is  OK  to  keep  a  turtle  along  with  fishes  in  the  tank?
 2.  Which  species  of  turtle  is  it?
 3.  How  many  times  should  I  feed  the  turtle  and  the  fishes?
 4.  Also  my  aquarium  vendor  asks  me  to  put  common  salt  in  the  aquarium  whenever  its  water  is  changed.  I  generally  replace  30%  of  the  tank  water  fortnightly,  then  i  put  common  salt,  anti  ich  agent  (5  ml)  and  anti  chlorine  agent  (5  ml).  Is  it  necessary  to  put  salt  in  fresh  water  aquarium?

 Thanks  in  advance

 Imran

 welcome  to  IAH.
i  think  you  would  be  better  off  starting  with  a  few  hardy  fishes  and  then  gradually  move  on  from  there, and  i  think  you  might  have  difficulty  in  giving  the  care  a  turtle  needs  to  be  healthy.the  turtle  is  a  nice  one, btw.
please  browse  through  the  forums  here  and  you  will  find  lots  of  useful  information  regarding  setting  up  tanks, cycling  and  other  basics  you  need  to  know.

Your  turtle  is  a  red-eared  slider

I  guess  the  water  is  too  deep  for  the  turtle  and  I  dont  see  a  place  for  it  to  bask.

Feed  then  twice  a  day....  just  make  sure  they  finish  the  food  in  ten  to  fifteen  mins.  Leftovers  pollute  the  water

I  guess  there  are  expert  in  this  forum  who  can  answer  your  4th  query.  I  aint  very  familiar  with  medication.  Thumb Up

 Hi,
Thanks  for  the  quick  reply  guys.  Now  I  know  at  least  the  kind  of  turtle  that  I  have.  By  the  Way,  I've  named  it  "Poseidon"!  Thank  you  "Kachua_Chap"  for  the  info  that  I  can't  keep  my  turtles  with  the  fishes.  I  was  also  suspecting  the  same  as  the  turtle  had  started  nibbling  the  tail  fin  of  my  gold  fishes.  I  guess  I'll  have  to  make  some  seperate  arrangements  for  Poseidon.
Well  Marc,  the  Poseidon  has  a  place  to  bask!  I've  frequently  seen  him  sit  on  top  of  the  sponge  filter  basking  in  the  light.  Thanks  anyway  for  your  opinion.

 Hi  Imran,

I  don't  see  a  sponge  filter  in  your  pics.  Are  you  referring  to  the  internal  submersible  power  filter  to  the  right  of  the  tank?

Turtle  tanks  need  a  ramp  system  of  some  sort  to  allow  the  turtle  some  basking  area.

This  can  be  built  into  the  tank  (permanently)  as  seen  in  this  pic:  http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/tq/47/150111847.jpg

Or  can  be  an  independent  system  hung  on  the  back-wall  of  the  aquarium.  Something  like  this:  http://www.fishpondinfo.com/photos/reptiles/tanks/turtank4.jpg

One  critical  aspect  to  remember  when  keeping  turtles  is  that  they  are  carriers  of  the  Salmonella  virus  which  is  easily  transmitted  to  Humans.  Be  very  careful  to  wash  your  hands  with  soap  after  handling  the  turtle  or  anything  in  the  turtle  tank.

 Good  luck,
 Sid

PS:  Also,  adding  salt  may  not  do  any  harm  (and  can  do  some  good).  But,  please  stop  adding  anti-ich  chemicals.  Any  medicine  is  to  be  added  only  if  you  see  the  symptoms.

Thanks  Sid  for  the  advise.  I'll  definitely  wash  my  hands  after  handling  the  turtle.  And  yes  i'll  stop  adding  anti-ich  agent  as  advised  but  I  made  this  practise  of  adding  anti-ich  agent  fortnightly  because  my  LFS  told  me  to  do  so.  Also  I  had  a  painful  experience  when  all  the  four  fish  that  I  put  in  the  tank  when  I  purchased  the  aquarium,  died  because  of  Ich.  So  I  add  the  anti  Ich  agent  as  a  precautionary  measure.  But  I  guess  you  are  right  in  suggesting  that  why  to  treat  a  disease  until  its  symptoms  appear.
Also  I'd  like  some  advise  regarding  keeping  my  turtle  and  fish  together?  After  reading  some  of  the  replies  to  my  post  I'm  considering  getting  a  new  tank  for  my  turtle.  But  on  second  thought,  I  fear  that  won't  my  turtle  get  lonely  in  the  tank?  what  should  I  do?  Please  advise  poeple?

 Regards,
 Imran

 Hi,
people  I  want  some  expert  advise.  Since  it  seems  my  turtle  has  started  nibbling  the  tail  fin  of  my  gold  fish,  i'm  thinking  of  moving  the  turtle  to  a  new  tank  of  size  1'  x1'  x1'.  Is  it  ok?  or  I  need  a  bigger  tank  for  the  turtle?  Experts  please  advise?  Also,  can  the  turtle  survive  alone  or  do  i  need  to  get  a  mate  for  it?  please  advise  as  i'm  going  to  decide  on  this  very  soon.

 -  Move  the  turtle  to  a  new  setup.
 -  For  a  turtle  that  size  you'd  atleast  need  something  around  30  US  Gallons  (that's  a  minimum).  The  bigger  the  better.
 -  Adequate  filtration  is  a  MUST  for  these  guys.  If  you  cannot  afford  expensive  filtration  equipment  I  would  suggest  regular  water  (aged  water)  changes.  Read  a  lot  on  BASKING  as  well.
 -  The  turtle  will  do  well  by  itself.

THIS  was  my  setup  in  2009.

 Regards,
 Rohan.

 Welcome  to  fish  keeping.

Keeping  fish  and  turtle  in  the  same  tank  is  not  a  good  idea.  both  need  different  environment  to  survive.  so  it  you  need  to  decide,  if  you  want  to  keep  2  tanks  or  want  to  continue  with  either  fish  or  turtle.

 hii..

actually  the  size  of  your  tank  is  fine  for  your  turtle  until  it  grows  in  some  size..but  if  u  are   feeling  water  completely  then  u  must  need  a  basking  area  for  your  turtle..(as  size  is  considered..u  can  make  basking  ramp  by  using  plastic  DVD  cover..i  had  made  the  same).  feed  them  turtle  food  for  few  months  once  or  twice  a  day..  Thumb Up

In  my  opinion,  don't  rush  into  buying  small  tanks..  as  they  are  pretty  much  useless  in  the  long  run.  Plan  ahead  and  get  a  MONSTER  TANK.

Your  turtle  is  much  much  "cooler"  than  Goldfish,  so  don't  move  the  turtle  to  a  tiny  tank  due  to  the  Goldfish.

Continue  to  keep  him  in  the  2  ft  tank  and  get  the  turtle  a  basking  area.

Consider  giving  away  your  goldfish  or  buying  a  3-4  feet  (or  5  ft)  tank  for  fish  only.  (Then  do  a  little  more  research  and  buy  Malawi  Cichlids  or  CA/SA  Cichlids  Smile  )

 Cheer,
 Sid

 Dear  Rohan,
Thanks  for  the  advise.  But  I  don't  understand  why  I  need  a  30  gallon  tank  for  a  turtle  which  is  hardly  2"  to  3"  long?  Do  I  really  need  a  tank  that  big  for  this  small  sized  turtle?  Please  advise?  I've  seen  your  video  on  U  tube  but  your  turtle  seem  to  be  bigger  in  size  than  mine.

The  turtle  may  be  2-3"  now  but  it  can  grow  upto  10-13"  so  better  buy  a  proper  sized  tank  instead  of  upgrading  to  a  new  tank  every  few  months  as  the  turtle  grows.
You  can  keep  the  water  level  low  enough  so  that  it  doesnt  drown  and  instead  of  a  fixed  basking  area  make  one  which  can  be  held  by  suction  cups.
The  water  level  along  with  the  basking  area  can  be  increased  as  the  turtle  grows  Smile
 Take  care

But  I  don't  understand  why  I  need  a  30  gallon  tank  for  a  turtle  which  is  hardly  2"  to  3"  long?  Do  I  really  need  a  tank  that  big  for  this  small  sized  turtle?  Please  advise?  I've  seen  your  video  on  U  tube  but  your  turtle  seem  to  be  bigger  in  size  than  mine.

 Hi  Imran,

Your  turtle  will  reach  that  size  in  a  years  span  if  properly  taken  care  of.  Almost  5-6  months  later  (post  shooting  that  video),  those  two  guys  were  moved  to  a  pals  indoor  pond.  Hence  most  of  us  would  stress  on  'tank  volume'.  If  possible,  keep  the  turtle  setup  bare  bottom  as  a  beginner..  easier  for  maintenance.

Please  do  update  your  location  as  well.   Smile

 Regards,
 Rohan.
