Guys want to setup a Black Water setup. Suggestions are most welcome.
Tank Size: 45 X 30 X 30 cm.
Please clear some doubts.
1. Which locally available leaves can I used to turn water black? In an old topic read about jackfruit leaves. Jackfruit tree is available in my school premises. From where can I get almond leaves?
2. I want to keep only Neon Tetras. Please suggest another fish/invertebrates with these?
3. How much light will be sufficient?
4. Can I grow any plants from Neon tetra biotype? What about water lettuce?
5. Which material should I use as background? Simple black paper or rocks.
6. I have a very beautiful branch of LEMON tree. I want to use it in this aquarium. Lemon wood is aquarium compatible and I used it successfully. But its color is white. How can I turn it in black color? |

What you have started smoking now a days????? Last Sunday you said, you are going for a reef tank and now asking abt Rio Negro!!
Anyway, there is nothing you have to do much in this setup. Drop drift woods as many as you can find. Make sure they are dark colored. Use dark color sand as substrate. Drop some dried Jackfruit leaves in the tank. Add some drops of Peat extract in water (Sera/Azoo/Aquael). If you want, you can keep some small sized rocks in the tank. Release the Neons/apistos/rummynose. Keep the light as low as possible.
Make sure to have a good filtration and flow in the tank. |

Hi Rajiv!
Nice to hear that as I got company! I am in the process of setting up a black water setup, though not absolutely Rio Nigro biotope.
Planning to keep some ferns. Not sure about that lives there in that biotope though. |

I plan to keep cardinals, rummy noses, some dwarf cories and hatchets. Not yet started to buy, the tank is cycling with some tiger barbs.
Have to pick up the leaching wood from somebody, planning to add almond leaves, I also heard dried banana leaves also do the job well.
How big will be your tank, mine is a 25 G only. |

Dear Rajiv,
If u ever need almond leaves let me know. I do come to delhi app. once in 30 - 45 days and can always bring the same for you. Whenever i come here i stay at def col. By the way i have seen almond leaves at Rajinder florists at def col though very rarely. They get the stems when they are in blossom during late winter.
regards and hope the same is helpful

Dear Rajiv,
The only problem with Black water setup in your aquarium size is maintaining the PH. As with every water change the PH could swing a lot. Leaching will take time and so also get some plan in place for your water change.
I did use some cocunut shalls for release of tanins, these are another option you can try.

If you need only tannis then use tea leaves/powder in socks. |

@saikumar - Have you really tried that in a tank?
@Rajiv - I have used jackfruit tree leaves. It does tend to keep ph at lower levels, but didnt have much of any change in coloration. Try and get a good source for almond leaves.
And maintaining ph might be a problem. Make sure you have hold on that before you introduce fishes (Maybe after 3-4weeks, so that you have time to monitor changes during a week and also change in params during water change). |

If you are not going to keep Wild cought tetras then you don't have to pay much attention to Lower pH. For the coloration you can use readymade Peat Extract/Black Water extract or I think those leaf litters will be enough to add some tanin.
@Sai.... we should not use Tea leaf extract in aquariums randomly. Once I heard from a cardinal breeder, a single drop of Tea leaf extract can make a havoc to the electro conductivity of the tank water. Don't ask me in details, I don't know anything else. |

Tirtha,
That water would have been poor buffer then, also depending on extract conc. If its just for colouration, then should be cheapest way. But true, for everything should be taken care.

Or else everytime we drank little tea after Biryani... something odd should have happened.
Cheers! |
