 Hello   Smile

I  have  a  18  gallon  tank  which  is  empty  now  and  was  wondering  if  I  can  keep  one  medium  sized  Goldfish  in  it?  I  know  the  tank  is  only  18  gallons  but  I  guess  it  can  hold  one  Goldfish.   Smile   I  have  never  kept  Goldfish  before  and  was  looking  for  some  pointers.  I  have  some  questions  and  here  they  are:

 1.  What  filtration  should  I  get  for  the  tank?  (Should  I  get  a  low  power  internal  filter,  something  like  a  13/15  Watts  Inter  Power  Filter?)

 2.  I  stay  in  Kolkata  and  the  summer  heat  here  will  be  pretty  strong,  so  in  that  case  should  I  add  more  aeration  to  the  water?

 3.  The  current  substrate  in  the  tank  is  crushed  medium  sized  gravel,  will  it  be  better  if  I  change  it  to  sand?

 Tank  Details:

 Tank  Size:  24"  (L)  X  12"  (W)  X  15"  (H)
 Capacity:  18  gallons  (68  Litres)
 Heater:  Sobo  100  W  Thermostat

   Please  advice  and  guide  me.

   Thanks  and  Regards,
 Souptik

 IMO

 1)  Tank  size  ok  for  2  medium  sized  goldfish
 2)  Power  filter  would  be  a  must;  should  have  a  high  flow  rate  but  there  should  not  be  strong  current  in  the  tank---goldies  not  comfortable  with  current
 3)  Heat  should  not  be  a  problem;  no  need  for  a  heater  in  cold  unless  the  temp.  drops  below  16-18  degrees--below  wich  i  noticed  goldies  getting  lazy.
 4)  I  would  prefer  gravel  to  sand
 5)  Snails  (apple;yellow/orange  ones  commonly  forund  in  lfs)  can  be  a  good  addition.  They  eat  goldfish  poop  (so  it  does  not  swim  around  your  aquarium).
 6)water  change--weekly  would  suffice

All  points  solely  from  my  experience  with  ranchus,  lion  heads,  orandas,  red  caps,  red  golds,  pearl  scales(litchi),  calicos,  pom-poms,  and  black  moors

 @  pkattitude:

Many  thanks  for  all  the  help,  appreciate  it   Smile

Since  you  mention  Goldfish  do  not  like  a  lot  of  current  then  I'll  have  to  make  a  DIY  spray  bar  for  the  internal  power  filter.  Will  a  15  Watts  650  L/H  power  filter  suffice  or  should  I  get  a  more  powerful  one?

I  was  thinking  I  might  get  rid  of  the  gravel  and  put  a  few  medium  size  pebbles  in  the  tank  keeping  the  tank  largely  BB,  this  would  be  a  major  help  in  siphoning  the  tank  and  keeping  the  water  cleaner.  Is  this  a  better  idea?

P.S.  I  happened  to  notice  a  type  of  Goldfish  at  a  LFS  nearby  that  had  a  really  beautiful  long  white  tail  like  veils,  what  kind  of  goldfish  is  that?

Filtration:  Gold  fish  need  excellent  filtration  as  they  create  a  LOT  of  waste.  Go  for  either:
 1.  Top  Filter:  Like  this  one:http://www.shopatsimba.com/product_info.php?products_id=5740
 2.  Internal  Filter  with  a  "Water  Fall"  output:  Like  this  one:  http://www.shopatsimba.com/product_info.php?products_id=5613

Temperature  Control::  When  the  temperature  does  get  too  hot,  just  add  a  few  bags  of  ice-cubes  to  the  tank.  I  started  out  with  Goldfish  and  I  have  never  had  any  problems  due  to  high  temperature.

Diseases:  Goldfish  are  prone  to  a  lot  of  diseases  as  they  are  man-made  fish.  The  water-parameters  are  usually  less  than  perfect  as  they  create  a  lot  of  waste.  Bad  water  quality  leads  to  diseases.  Goldfish  are  voracious  eaters  and  seem  to  eat  even  when  they're  full.  This  leads  to  bloat  and  other  problems.  Even  if  you  keep  your  tank  in  pristine  condition  and  get  the  feeding  right,  they  have  a  very  strong  chance  of  succumbing  to  Swim  Bladder  disorders  due  to  their  compressed  size.  (I  lost  my  favorite  Ranchu  to  SwimBladder  disease  when  there  were  absolutely  no  mistakes  from  my  side.)

Substrate:  LFS  guys  keep  recommending  against  sand  in  GOldfish  tank.  I  am  not  sure  why.  Pebbles  or  any  other  (large  particles)  substrate  poses  a  challenge  to  keeping  the  water  clean.  I  would  recommend  going  for  sand  or  going  BB.

Goldfish  Prices:  The  prices  for  Goldfish  are  artificially  inflated  in  most  markets  because  people  who  buy  them  are  primarily  novices  to  the  hobby.  Don't  pay  more  than  a  two  digit  figure  for  a  goldfish  no  matter  what  the  "type".  I  would  recommend  a  Ranchu  or  a  Lionhead..  However,  Orandas  seem  to  be  what  most  people  go  for..  (  I  bought  my  Ranchus  for  a  two  digit  figure  for  a  pair!)

 Good  luck,
 Sid

PS:  I  presume  you  are  getting  this  Goldfish  for  a  child  in  your  family  or  something..  Because,  goldfish  are  not  even  close  to  being  a  "good"  fish  for  someone  experienced..

Awesome  Sid,  you  nailed  it  right,  this  is  actually  for  my  young  brother!  He's  been  nagging  me  for  quite  a  while  now  to  have  a  Goldfish  tank  and  I  decided  to  give  the  young  lad  a  little  gift   :D

Now  coming  to  all  the  info  you  provided...  first  a  big  thank-you!   Smile

Now,  you  mention  that  Gold  fish  are  prone  to  diseases  mainly  due  to  their  over-eating  and  water  conditions.  I  read  somewhere  quite  sometime  ago  on  the  internet  that  it's  better  to  soak  the  food  pellets  overnight  before  feeding  Goldfish,  is  this  necessary?  Is  feeding  them  Tetra  Bits  good  or  do  they  need  other  types  of  food?  I'm  keeping  the  tank  BB,  maybe  a  few  medium  sized  pebbles  thrown  in.

As  for  the  filtration  thingy:  Taking  your  advice  Sid,   I'm  going  with  a  good  Top  Filter.  I'll  be  putting  in  sponge  and  ceramic  rings,  hope  this  is  good?

 Regards,
 Souptik

 Regards,
 Souptik

You're  welcome,  Souptik.  I  am  just  doing  my  part  after  benefiting  from  advice  of  experts  on  IAH..

About  Filtration:   I  think,  the  Water-fall  output  Internal  Filter  will  provide  mechanical  as  well  as  biological  filtration.  I  think  that  would  be  slightly  better  than  the  Top  filter  (which  will  provide  mainly  Biological  filtration)..  Although  the  Top-Filter  will  give  your  tank  more  room  as  it's  not  going  to  be  inside  the  tank..   I  don't  know..  I  would  "over  do"  the  filtration  and  get  both..

Also,  check  if  the  hood/cover  of  the  tank  allows  enough  space  for  a  top-filter..

I  think  "over  filtration"  will  allow  you  to  keep  2  Goldfish  and  maybe  a  pleco  in  this  tank..  (Pleco  can  be  moved  to  your  larger  tanks  once  he  is  big  enough.)

 Good  luck,
 Sid

Keeping  gold  fish  healthy  is  a  difficult  task.  They  seem  to  fade  out  for  no  apparent  reason  what  so  ever.   Sad

Guess  then  I'll  get  both  the  filters  to  do  the  job.  Over  filtration  doesn't  hurt.  The  fact  that  does  worry  me  is  the  sudden  loss  of  the  Goldfish  itself  like  you  and  Dev  above  have  mentioned  even  though  water  parameters  are  fine.  Well,  I  haven't  kept  Goldfish  before  so  I'm  taking  a  try  here.  Hope  it  survives.   Smile
