My pink Mystus has a prominent mid lateral stripe ending in a blotch as in here :
Ever seen one one yours???
Here s a pic of my Mystus gulio for comparison :
Your fish has rounded caudal lobes and the M.gulio I have has pointed caudal lobes.Adipose shape also seems different. |

Hey Balaji, could your pink Mystus be M. montanus?
Because the caudal spot and lateral dark line kinda fit the description.
Gokuls' fish has me stumped |

Mystus montanus should have more than one stripe on the body. This one has never gotten 'em. Plus pointed caudal lobes too.
The 'pink' one I have seems to have rounded ones. Oh this damn genus!!!!!! |

Could be Mystus armatus as it was originally described as being deep bodied.
Just how reliable are shape and length of the lobes in differentiating species??? |

Very unreliable I have observed the shape and length to vary with age also. |

Oh!!! Shape/length of lobes are still being used in papers to differentiate between species. Atleast catfish papers. |

Cant complain..... when caudal fin band is still used to differentiate filaments! |

Yup, these fish need to be kept and observed more. Btw, this colouring is seasonal I think (it happened with the one we collected in Challakudy before), or it may do with less Canarensis in the tank. In any case they are voracious feeders. They, now after keeping them for sometime, I think, will make great community fish as long as tankmates are bigger than their mouths. |

Tell that to your dead Puntius denisoni.
My guess is this has something to do with the water conditions in Erode. None of the other Mystus that came exhibit this sorta unique colouration/patterns. |

Hey man have a shoal of 2 doz of them in the same tank. All 1-1.5 inchers. They are doing great ! that dead one could've been hurt by something else. Hey man we need more people keeping this fish. So.. after some observation... I would certainly recommend a few for a large native community setup. Esp. wild caught Mystus from different regions . |

Personally, I think they would be ok with bigger barbs like Puntius dorsalis,P.orphoides,P.sarana etc. |
