Hi  my  tank  has  some  white  colour  ant  like  creature  in  my  substrate  (below)  which  i  can  see  from  the  glass  .  They  seem  to  be  eating  my  glossostigma  leaves  because  some  leaves  have  holes  in  them.  They  don't  look  like  planeria.

What  is  this  and  how  do  i  treat  it.

 Hey  Ryel,
These  could  be  fresh  water  amphipods.  Did  you  recently  get  new  plants  or  fish/shrimp.  If  they  are  amphipods,  no  special  care  required.  Any  fish  hungry  enough  and  a  big  mouth  to  match  will  devour  these.

Would  be  best  if  you  could  post  a  closeup  pic  of  these  so  called  ants.

 Cheers

 any  inputs

Google  images  for  freshwater  amphipods,  There  are  almost  22  different  species  of  these(probly  more  than  that).  Check  if  these  are  the  same  as  you  got.  These  guys  can  grow  big  upto  a  centimeter  or  two  long.

They  evidently  get  a  tail  as  they  grow  bigger  and  longer.  The  tail  looks  similar  to  a  shrimps  tail.  Only  that  they  have  a  three  fin  fan-like  end.

Also  these  are  not  very  active  breeders  with  a  lifespan  of  6  months  to  a  year.

 Hi  Ryel,

Same  thing  I  have  experienced  in  my  2  week  old  planted  set  up,
but  2  days  back  I  have  introduced  4  RCS  and  2  Flying  Fox  in  may  tank,
after  that  I  haven't  seen  anything.

You  may  also  try  something  like  that.   Thumbs Up

@crackinspine  no  they  don't  look  familiar  like  anything  in  the  pictures.  They  don't  have  a  tail.  Like  said  earlier  more  like  a  very  tiny  grain  of  rice  below  the  substrate.  Yes  they  do  have  antennas  but  very  very  hard  to  see.

@hems  sadly  unable  to  keep  rc  due  to  some  reason  lost  like  24  of  them  hence  waiting  for  some  time  before  i  get  them.  Have  SAE  but  again  not  sure  if  they  are  eating  them.  I  have  to  literally  use  a  magnifying  glass  and  still  unable  to  see  them  clearly.  Apart  from  this  topic  what  is  the  temp  of  your  tank  ???

 Thanks

It  could  be  one  of  the  smaller  amphipod  like  Hyalella  azteca.  Anyway  they  are  all  good  fish  food.

Do  they  swim  in  the  water  coloumn.  also  is  they  do  swim  are  their  movements  erratic.  Those  white  grains  could  be  a  moina(daphne)  species.  Those  are  closest  resemblance  to  white  grains....

Do  you  see  any  of  these  on  your  fish(gills  and  fins)  or  in  its  feaces?  If  not,  you  cool...

 Peace

@  crackinspine      No  i  do  not  see  them  swimming  in  the  water.  Looks  that  hey  exist  only  in  the  substrate.  These  things  cannot  be  seen  on  the  fish  and  sure  about  the  feaces.

Check  if  you  could  get  some  bottom  dwellers.  Thatd  be  an  immediate  idea  if  they  are  on  an  outbreak  and  occupy  most  of  the  substrate.  Shrimps(Crystal,  Cherry,  Yamato)  would  be  a  good  option  as  they  have  least  impact  on  fish...

Dont  worry..Theyr  gonna  be  food  anyway.

@crackinspine  lost  about  three  dozen  shrimps  of  yamato  and  rc  combined  due  to  some  reason.  Don't  know  the  cause  my  temp  is  about  31  degrees  folks  saying  it  is  the  cause.  Still  have  to  make  provision  to  lower  the  temp  a  bit.  What  do  u  think.  Have  assasin  snails  will  that  suffice.

 Snails  no  good  bro...

Ramirezi(considering  plants),  if  thats  an  option.  Hungry  guys....  Could  keep  a  pair.  Theyll  breed  too..
 Kribensis;  same  as  above

And  yeah..  Shrimps  do  need  cooler  tempretures  to  thrive...Go  green...Keep  a  shrimp  (species)  only  tank  with  excess  green..Like  a  24'  X  12'  X  12'  for  about  12  specimen(max)  with  heavy  loads  of  plantation...
