I  thought  it  would  be  worth  comin  out  with  a  thread  where  the  most  common  diseases  and  their  cures  would  be  discussed. One  can  use  this  thread  as  a  quick  reference   Smile
I  have  come  up  with  the  following  :

 Disease        :  Dropsy
Symptoms  :  Abdomen  becomes  swollen  and  bloated
 Cause           :  Bacterial  infection
Cure               :  Quarantine  the  sick  fish
                               Change  water
                               Medication
I  ll  add  more  to  the  list  soon.
 Your  turn  guys   Very Happy

 Hrishi

When  you  mention  medication,  it  would  be  worthwhile  to  cite  the  proper  medicine  alongwith  its  appropriate  dosage.

Dropsy  is  also  caused  by  other  factors  like  bad  water  quality,  stress  etc....  The  bloating  is  a  symptom  of  the  in-capability  of  the  fish  to  regulate  fluids.

I  suggest  give  some  well  researched  links  after  each  disease  which  will  help  the  readers  to  get  more  info.....this  will  save  the  time  googling  in  times  of  need.

Dropsy  can  easily  be  mistaken  for  Swim  Bladder  Issues  as  well  in  the  initial  stages.

 Swim  Bladder  Issues:
Symptom:  Swollen  Stomach  with  no  pine  coning  of  the  scales  (Scales  sticking  out).  If  the  fish  displays  signs  of  only  a  swollen  stomach,  is  unable  to  swim  properly  or  has  trouble  staying  idle  and  tends  to  keep  floating  away,
Possible  Cure:  feed  it  skin  less  boiled  peas  after  starving  your  fish  for  a  week.

 Dropsy:
Symptoms:  Swollen  Stomach  with  Pine  coning,  Lack  of  appetite  and  clear  poop.
Possible  Cure:Epsom  salts  baths.  2  table  spoons  of  Epsom  salts  for  every  3  liters  of  water.  Dip  the  fish  in  it  for  a  period  of  10  mins.  no  more.  Repeat  this  everyday  till  the  pine  coning  stops.

Diet  to  be  followed:  medicated  fish  food.  i  always  kept  this  in  stock  in  my  fridge.  Given  below  is  my  recipe  i  followed  since  we  dont  seem  to  have  medicated  fish  food  available  locally.

Boil  a  few  pods  of  garlic  in  water  till  you  can  make  it  a  fine  paste.  Grind  your  fish's  fav  food  into  a  paste  as  well  and  mix  this  in  the  ratio  of  1  part  garlic  paste  and  3  parts  fish  food.  make  this  into  tiny  balls  (i  used  to  squeeze  the  mix  through  a  rice-cleaner  like  dish  mom  had  laying  around).  feed  this  to  the  fish  till  you  notice  the  fish  is  back  to  his  or  her  normal  self.

No  matter  what  the  issue  is,  a  sick  fish  needs  2  water  changes  a  day.

I  worked  with  the  assumption  that  the  hobbyist  know  that  a  sick  fish  needs  to  be  moved  to  a  Quarantine  Tank  and  needs  constant  water  changes.

Don't  be  under  such  wrong  impression,  many  hobbyists  start  treatment  in  main  tank  &  force  other  fishes  to  undergo  mandatory  medication  too.  Chuckle

I  once  used  tetracycline  on  a  dropsy  infected  molly.Dropped  in  2  tablets  into  a  20  gallon  tank  I  guess  i  overdosed  the  tank. The  molly  didnt  survive   Sad  .I  bought  it  from  a  nearby  pharmacy.
Some  links  to  some  sites  dedicated  to  fish  diseases

Zakk  -  I  guess  that  was  the  reason  it  didn't  survive. The  lfs  owner  was  the  one  who  told  me  to  use  the  particular  antibiotic.
 Good  one  Yogesh   Chuckle

tetracycline  can  be  used  for  external  infections  like  columinaris  or  fin  rot.  not  for  internal  parasites.

It  is  not  a  laughing  matter,  Hrishi.
Do  you  have  any  Idea  what  happens  when  you  use  Antibiotics  indiscriminately  and  irresponsibly?

hi  zakk,  columnaris  is  also  an  internal  bacterial  infection,  although  it  tends  to  start  off  as  an  external  bacterial  infection.  It  is  caused  by  gram  negative  bacteria  (i  dont  know  the  name  exactly).
