 Hi  all.

I  am  finalizing  funds  for  my  marine  nano  and  now  I  have  a  dilema:  Pc  Fan  or  a  Cooling  Fan.
Can  someone  tell  me  the  disadvantage  of  PC  fans?

because  I  think  PC  fans  do  Enough  amount  of  cooling,  are  heavy  duty  and  cheap.  They  are  also  available  on  eBay  India  so  dont  require  shipping.
At  the  price  of  1  branded  aquarium  cooling  unit[  which  has  4  fans  in  it]  you  can  easily  get  10  PC  fans.

And  the  PC  fans  have  cool  LED  lights  too  Rock On

So  why  arent  they  used  in  aquariums?

I  prefer  the  so  called  PC  fans.  And  that  too  120mm  ones.

The  disadvantage  is  they  run  at  12v.  So  you  need  to  get  an  adapter.  And  if  you  plan  on  using  more  then  1,  maybe  some  DIY  thing  for  power  supply.

Advantage  -  They  push  good  amount  of  air.  I  always  look  for  that.  They  are  pretty  reliable.  I  have  these  running  24/7  since  Jan  2009.  They  consume  lot  less  power  compared  to  220v  AC  fans.

If  you  can  get  in  touch  with  shops  which  supply  industrial  equipments,  they  have  these  from  OEMs  (Yate  Loon  is  pretty  common).  These  will  be  much  cheaper  compared  to  PC  hardware  stores  which  sell  rebranded  bling  versions  from  same  OEMs.

Single  sturdy,  heavy  duty  aquarium  circulation  fan  (direct  AC  line)  which  i  have  tried,  reduces  3  degree  Celsius  temp  of  water  in  my  4  feet  tank.

I  have  seen  other  sets  like  4  in  1  ,&  2  in  1  are  all  just  PC  cooling  fans  powered  by  AC  to  DC  adapters  (12V),  which  is  skinny  and  performance  fall  short  of  the  former  model.

A  fan  is  a  fan,  but  there  are  other  things  you  need  to  consider.  Noise,  computer  fans  run  on  12v  but  you  can  get  an  old  pc  powersupply  and  hook  up  bunch  of  fans  in  that  and  CFM  of  fan.  I  like  pc  fans  cause  they  are  silent  and  cheap.

Then  I  am  getting  PC  fans  Thumb Up

I  am  a  computer  engineer  [in  the  making]  so  i  was  thinking  about  hooking  up  an  SMPS  run  two  sets  of  two  fans  each.  But  i  can  fit  many  more  as  I  have  a  vintage  SMPS  with  a  billion  O/Ps.

But  deepak,  the  bling  versions  look  so,  Ummm.  BLING!  Thumbs Up

I  am  confused  here...do  all  aquarium  require  a  cooling  fan  ?  or  only  the  once  with  big  lighting  needs  a  fan  ?  I  have  a  lot  of  pc  fans  laying  around,  and  i  am  good  with  electronics  Smile  I  can  hook  up  fans  to  my  aquarium,  but  my  question  is  "do  i  really  need  one"  ?  I  dont  have  a  big  lighting  and  i  use  a  single  bright  white  Led  to  illuminate  my  tank.

The  mercury  is  rising  in  mumbai  these  days,  so  do  i  need  a  fan  ?

Libero,  you  need  a  fan  if  your  tank  temperature  is  higher  than  the  recommended  temperature  for  its  inhabitants.

You  will  need  a  12Volt  adapter  first  to  connect  the  PC  fan  to  the  tank.  Then  you  will  have  to  do  something  to  mount  the  fan  to  the  tank.  DIY...

@Mortis,  I  plan  to  clamp  with  steel  clip.  Lot's  of  other  DIY  options  also  alailable  in  my  head  Smile  depending  on  orientation  of  fan  i  want  !.

I  actually  do  not  prefer  the  fan  idea  after  a  trial  run  which  i  did  just  1hr  back  Shocked
Accidentally  i  put  my  finger  in  running  fan   Sad   i  guess  the  fan  was  running  at  more  than  3500  rpm  Sad

My  results:  Plan  for  fan  on  tank  =  Not  advisable  (at  least  not  without  any  protective  fan  grill).

 Had  posted  this  earlier  -
You  will  need  couple  of  cloth  hanging  clips  and  zip  ties

All  thats  needed  is  12v  molex  connectors.  And  usually  these  fans  also  come  with  additional  connectors,  so  you  can  kind  of  chain  them.  Even  the  cheapest  of  SMPS  can  run  quite  a  few  fans.

@random2,  Why  do  we  need  a  bulky  smps  ?  ther's  absolute  no  need  for  it,  a  12v  dc  adapter   with  enough  amp  rating  is  more  than  enough  to  power  the  fans.  I  had  even  made  a  DIY  rheostat  for  my  PC  fan  to  control  the  fan  speed  and  hence  the  vibration  +  noise  :)

The  set-up  from  the  pic  looks  not  very  hardy,  i  mean  you  can  easily  suffer  what  i  did   Crying or Very sad  (finger  caught  up  in  fan).

From  your  personal  experience,  did  you  find  any  considerable  temp  drop  after  running  the  fan  ?
