 Hi  Guys,

 Is  it  essential  to  add  some  salt  like  stuffs  to  water  (so  that  it  become  alkaline)  for  my  malawi  setup.  I  only  have  several  rocks  for  my  mbunas.

 Check  the  ph  first  before  you  add  any  crushed  corals  in  your  tank.

 i  would  say,  dont  MESS  with  the  water  parameters
 acclimatise  your  fish  to  the  water  you  have,
 malawi's  are  very  hardy  fish  and  will  adapt  to  all  Indian  water  conditions.

 dealers  who  dont  know  two-cents  worth  about  ph  keep  mbuna  for  weeks  purchasing  them  from  wholesalers  who  keep  them  for  weeks  again,  sell  them  many  days  after  keeping  on  display,  and  they  are  all  over  the  place.  i  think  that  is  proof  that  the  fish  do  well  enough,  especially  since  they  are  mostly  tank  bred...

 @Mohammed  Mudassir  :  So  I  don't  need  to  check  the  water  parameters  and  concentrate  on  the  filtration  part  only  ?

 @Romi:  You  are  absolutely  correct.

 @deepakg:  I  never  gonna  add  crushed  corals.  Is  there  any  easiest  way  to  check  the  PH  ?

 I  agree  with  mudassir  let  the  fish  acclimatize  itself  to  the  water  conditions  first  and  they  will  set  themselves  properly.  Filtration  is  am  important  aspect  and  u  can  concentrate  on  that.  But  we  cant  keep  them  as  the  dealers  do  cos  they  can  take  that  risk  as  they  have  larger  profit  margins.  We  can  give  the  fish  better  filtration  levels  and  they  shall  show  the  color  as  well.  Best  of  luck  Kartik

 concentrate  more  on  the  filtration,
 you  get  ph  strips  at  chemical  stores  to  check  for  the  ph  value(this  is  the  cheapest)  or  you  can  do  a  one  time  investment  in  a  ph  meter.

 You  could  even  increase  it  using  a  very  tinge  of  baking  soda  solution
 but  as  advised  please  check  the  PH  before  tampering.
 I  dont  think  you  need  to  change  the  PH.  my  malawis  are  doing  good  .  Iam  using  tap  water.   Chuckle

 Here's  my  two  cents.

 Not  Malawi  but  here  is  what  I  do  for  my  Tangs

 Add  a  Tablespoon  of  Epson  Salt,  1  Teaspoon  of  both  Rock  Salt  and  Baking  Soda  for  20ltrs  of  water.  The  fishes  seem  more  colorful  and  lively  as  compared  to  the  normal  tap  water.  Haven't  checked  the  pH  both  before  and  after  the  doses  but  as  long  as  the  fishes  seem  happy  and  are  eating  well  I  don't  think  it  matters  much.
