 Good  morning  all,

I  am  planning  to  change  my  aquarium  background  of  my  3  feet  tank  with  some  rock  design  and  jungle  home  carved  on  thermocol(  styrofoam)  sheets  normally  used  for  crafting  purpose.

Suggestion  /  advice  required  on  following  points.

Is  it  safe  to  use  thermocol  (styrofoam)  inside  the   tank?
Is  ordinary  grey  cement  can  be  used  for  colour?
Can  I  use  enamel  /oil  paint  to  colour  the  thermocol  sheets.
Any  DIY  idea  for  natural  looking  background.

 Have  a  GOOD  DAY  ahead.

 Regards,
 Sameer

Hello,  I  am  new  to  this  forum.  I  would  like  to  say  that  recently  I  made  a  landscape  for  my  aquarium  using  Styrofoam.  I  joined  the  foam  layers  using  silicon  glue  and  then  used  two  layers  of  grey  cement  and  one  layer  of  white  cement.  Anything  made  from  cement  needs  to  be  treated  for  a  few  months  in  water,  so  I  kept  my  one  in  our  garden  and  let  the  monsoon  do  the  work!  Very Happy

 Don't  keep  that  under  sun
Or  it  get  hard  and  crack....
Best  is  put  background  in  water  for  few  days  and  change  water  in  2-3  days,Do  this  till  8-10  times

Thermocol  floats  in  water.  How  will  you  manage  that?

When  you  glue  sand/cement  it  put  weight  on  Styrofoam...it  won't  float
For  Rajdeep  You  will  to  put  more  silicon  stick  sand  or  put  cement....

My  one  is  alredy  as  heavy  as  a  rock  with  3  layers  of  cement.  But  if  it  still  floats  I  will  fix  it  with  silicon  glue  to  the  background.

How  much  layer  of  cement  you  applied  ?
Apply  3  Layers  of  cement....Just  dry  each  layer  after  applying  it  Make  each  layer  thick  by  its  first  layer.

Here  what  is  the  purpose  of  ¬†styrofoam  ?  Is  it  for  decorative  purpose  or  any  insulation  ?

Styrofoam  is  a  cheap  alternative  for  making  structures.  You  can  make  the  whole  thing  with  cement  or  plaster  of  paris,  but  it  will  take  a  long  time-money-skill  (also  very  heavy).  The  Styrofoam  forms  the  basic  structure  over  which  you  can  apply  cement  or  plaster  of  pairs  to  improve  the  design  or  add  texture.  (NOT  SURE  if  plaster  of  paris  sticks  to  styrofoam).
