 Folks,
Have  seen  two  collection  reports  (off  Oragadam  (TN)  and  off  Sivanasamudram(KAR))  where  fellow  members  have  caught  and  idenfified  Badis  sp.  I  was  given  to  understand  that  this  a  north  indian  native  and  not  found  in  the  Cauvery  or  Adayar  basin.  It  is  my  understanding  that  the  Kollegala  area  is  watered  by  the  Cauvery  and  its  tributaries  and  the  chembarmabakkam  tank  is  part  of  the  Adayar  river  basin  that  has  additional  reservoirs  in  Nemam,  Sri  Perumbudur,  Mainmangalam  and  Pillaipakkam.  none  of  these  geographies  should  have  badis  sp.

What  could  be  the  source  of  these  fish  in  southern  waters  ?  or  is  Badis  a  pan  indian  species  ?  I  have  not  seen  any  reports  of  Dario's  in  these  trips.  Is  the  badis  locally  invasive  now  ?  Also  as  the  Adayar  river  originates  from  Chembarambakkam  has  anyone  seen  Badis  in  the  river  ?  Further  the  other  major  basin  in  chennai  is  the  Puzhal  lake  in  red  hills,  any  sightings  there  ?  As  the  cauvery  system  traverses  Kanakapura  and  moves  into  mandya  and  mysore,  logically  there  should  be  Badis  sp  present  in  the  entire  system  right  upto  the  delta  in  Tanjore  !

 Thanks  in  Advance,
 Shiv

 Hi  Shiv,

The  first  Badis  badis  was  collected  from  south  India  in  the  year  2008  and  officially  reported  in  the  year  2009  from  Chembarambakkam  in  Tamil  Nadu.  Now  as  you  said  it  has  spread  out  quite  well  and  is  being  reported  from  all  over  south-west  India.

I  feel  Badis  badis  wad  not  present  in  South  India  earlier.  The  interlinking  of  rivers  has  brought  it  in.  Check  out  this  Link  page  38  gives  you  an  idea  how  water  has  been  partially  or  completely  transferred  from  the  north  to  the  south.  A  valid  means  for  transporting  a  small  fish  all  the  way  from  the  north.  One  other  such  fish  is  Pethia  (Puntius)  gelius,  which  is  also  a  north  Indian  fish  reported  from  Chembarambakkam.

Now  Dario  urops  from  Western  Ghats  is  another  story.  This  species  was  described  recently  and  this  could  be  a  species  missed  out  by  earlier  surveys.  This  species  is  not  a  con-gener  from  the  north  as  in  the  description  it  is  clearly  given  that  it  is  tentatively  placed  under  Dario  and  the  Genus  assignment  could  change,  making  it  a  unique  species  to  the  western  ghats.

I  appreciate  your  interest  in  bio-geography.  Please  feel  free  to  ask  any  other  question  you  may  have.

 Marc

 Thanks  Sai,Marc,
While  i  am  a  keen  aquarist,  my  overall  interest  is  the  complete  eco-system.  Marc's  reply  is  very  scary  as  one  of  the  reasons  i  am  asked  is  the  inter-basin  water  transfer  that  was  mooted  by  APJ  and  investigated  by  various  governments  since.  To  me  this  is  a  stupid  idea  on  stilts  as  the  bio-diversity  will  be  wiped  out.  Looking  at  the  proliferation  of  Gambisia  sp,  Oreochromis  sp  as  well  as  various  exotic  carps  in  all  water  bodies  is  quite  scary.  We  are  tampering  with  stuff  we  do  not  understand.  I  wonder  what  micro-predator  will  be  displaced  by  the  invasion  of  badis  into  peninsular  india.  I  hear  that  Badis  sp  display  good  brood  rearing  so  will  be  a  threat  to  other  species.

Good  to  know  that  the  Dario  reported  by  Nayak  is  endemic  to  the  w.ghats.

 regards,
 shiv

Check  this  article  on  some  research  on  this  topic.  Some  of  the  assumptions  on  the  paper  (like  gambusia  not  getting  naturalized  )  are  wrong  according  to  my  observations  in  the  field.
