Hi  there,

Glad  to  have  found  this  informative  website...Starting  to  set-up  my  new  freshwater  tank  (33litres/8.7  gallons)

I'm  planning  to  keep  live  plants  and  for  the  same,  bought  red  soil  from  the  market.  I  was  told  not  to  rinse  it  more  than  3  times  otherwise  the  vital  nutrients  would  wash  off  too...

I  have  placed  the  red  soil  substrate,  put  the  water  with  the  help  of  a  plate...This  is  how  it  looks  like  (pics  attached)...I  am  waiting  for  it  to  settle  and  it's  been  2  days  already....

Purchased  but  not  installed  the  filter  yet...should  I  go  ahead  with  installation  or  change  the  water  or  wait  for  some  more  time...

 Also  suggest  my  next  step...

 Thanks
 ajay

 Ajay,  welcome  to  IAH..
But  that  does  not  look  like  red  soil  substrate..  can  you  elaborate  more  on  it,  like  brand  name  or  common  name  from  the  place  you  bought  it,  and  tell  us  more  about  the  whole  setup  like  tank  dimensions,  filter  and  lighting  etc..

 Hi  Ajay,

A  warm  welcome  to  IAH.  Do  introduce  yourself  here  and  update  your  location.

Updating  your  location  would  help  you  get  in  touch  with  the  hobbyist  near  your  place.  This  would  help  you  in  knowing  the  best  lfs  to  get  the  fishes/plants  equipments  etc  at  a  reasonable  rate.  Its  a  normal  tendency  of  an  lfs  guy  to  overcharge  someone  who  is  new  to  this  hobby.  This  could  also  help  you  in  meeting  the  hobbyist  and  share  information,  clear  your  doubts  etc...

Do  read  up  more  before  you  start  a  planted  tank.  There  are  lots  of  information  on  IAH  itself  on  keeping  a  freshwater  planted  tank.

Do  post  more  on  your  tank.  What  all  equipments  do  you  have  currently  to  start  the  planted  tank.

 What  filter  do  you  have?
What  lighting  setup  do  you  have?  etc...

 Hello,

 Nice  to  hear  from  you...

 A  bit  about  myself

I'm  from  Bombay.  This  is  the  first  time,  I'll  be  setting  up  a  tank.  I  have  my  own  establishment...I  love  the  idea  of  keeping,  taking  care  of  fishes...I  think  it's  a  great  stress  buster...

A  bit  about  my  tank  and  accessories

 L=  24  inches  (61cms)  x  B=  11.6  inches  (30cms)  x  H=  9  inches  (23cms)
I  know  the  height  is  less,  so  I'm  planning  to  keep  shorter  plants...

I  was  fortunate  enough  to  get  help  from  one  of  the  most  experienced  hobbyists  in  Bombay.  He's  my  friend's  friend.  He  accompanied  me  to  the  shop  in  Borivali  called  Utekar  Fisheries  (The  owner  got  his  Masters  in  Fisheries  Science  and  specialization  in  aquaculture)...they  suggested  the  substrate...I  think  it's  called  red  soil...I  could  be  wrong  here...

I  bought  the  filter  before  meeting  them,  so  the  other  shopkeeper  gave  a  smaller  one:  BOYU  submersible  filter  (300L/H),  these  guys  told  me  that  I  will  need  another  filter  but  later  on...

I  have  to  collect  my  top  cover  and  the  lighting  from  the  shop.  The  experienced  hobbyist  helped  me,  so  did  the  Utekar  Fisheries  employees  (they  are  well  trained).  I  don't  know  the  specifications  yet....

Since,  this  guy  is  busy  with  other  things,  I  thought  of  taking  some  help  from  this  website...so  please  suggest  how  to  clean  the  water...

 Thanks
 ajay

If  you'r  intention  is  to  have  a  planted  tank,  then  your  basic  requirement  would  be..

A  good  external  filter  with  a  flow  rate  of  500L/Hr  rating,  it  can  be  hang  on  back  (HOB)  But  better  if  you  can  buy  a  canister  filter..  with  good  filter  media  like  Bio  balls,Ceramic  rings,  filter  pads,  filter  floss  and  aqua  clay  will  also  be  nice..
Lighting  requirement  must  be  around  minimum  of  24  -  40w  of  any  one  of  CFL  Bulbs  (12  x2  nos)  ,  T8  or  T5  Tubes  (  2  nos  of  2  feeter  tubes),  or  Led  floodlight  20w  x  2  nos  in  865  rating(cool  Daylight)
You  will  need  a  good  substrate  for  plant  growth  like  contro  soil,  ADA  Aquasoil  and  many  DIY  substrates  ┬ábased  on  garden  soil,  you  will  find  many  post  regarding  this  in  IAH.  But  I  cant  help  you  on  the  present  red  soil  substrate  you  are  using..  because  we  are  hearing  it  for  the  first  time..

So  as  of  now  ,  do  50%  daily  water  changes  for  a  week,  and  add  a  good  external  filter  and  see  whether  the  murky  water  clears  up.  or  else  you  need  to  find  some  other  solution..  like  changing  your  substrate  or  capping  it  with  a  layer  of  river  sand..

@Nidhi  Thanks!  I  will  look  into  it.  But  in  the  beginning,  can  I  use  my  submersible  filter  to  clear  the  water?

Thanks  I  talked  to  them  already,  In  how  much  value  did  he  sell  the  sand?

you  can  also  use  a  simple  sponge  filter  to  clear  the  water.  it  will  take  a  week  to  get  off  the  gloomy  water  colour  Smile

Should  I  change  the  water  too?  50%?  I  don't  remember  the  price.  I  took  8kgs  for  my  tank...He  gave  me  good  discount  as  I'd  gone  with  an  experienced  hobbyist  and  his  regular  customer...

Yes,  you  can  use  internal  filter  as  of  now..  But  as  you  start  planting  and  introducing  fishes,  the  bio  load  will  be  too  much  for  it.

The  substrate  looks  like  the  red  soil  that  has  recently  come  in  tho  the  market  .  It  is  a  local  soil  which  looks  like  crushed  laterite(but  with  smoother  texture  and  with  little  dust)...  I  heard  that  they  are  rich  in  iron  but  you  would  need  some  additives  like  JBL  aquabasis  or  ocean  free  product  to  make  sure  that  the  soil  suits  for  all  the  plants.  Please  take  a  little  substrate  out  of  the  water  and  take  a  pic  and  post  it  here  for  us  to  confirm.

About  filtration  you  can  go  with  the  internal  filter  as  of  now  if  the  shop  keeper  is  not  ready  to  take  it  back.  If  you  ask  me  the  flow  rate  is  sufficient  since  your  total  tank  capacity  is  42  liters  and  with  substrate  it  will  be  35  liters  so  a  flow  rate  of  8  X  is  there.  The  problem  with  internal  filter  is  the  lack  of  filter  media  space.  So  when  you  have  enough  money  you  can  go  for  a  canister  which  will  give  crystal  clear  water.  But  as  of  now  do  just  invest  take  your  time  and  see  the  magic.

 @Nidhi  Thanks!

@Jabba  Yes,  you're  right.  The  shopkeeper  told  me  to  buy  JBL  aquabasis  when  I  come  to  collect  the  plants.  Bingo!  My  tank  took  33  liters  of  water...Pic  attached

This  doesnt  look  like  soil  then...  Shocked  its  a  substrate.  Probably  synthetic  or  otherwise  it  seems  like  brackish  river  soild.  Does  it  feel  oily  a  little  bit?

Just  for  the  time  being  let  me  check  the  soil.  I  have  ordered  a  KG  from  him,  untill  then  wait.   Smile
