 Nice  start  Aninda.

What's  the  size  of  your  tank!!

Also  I  think  Bala  shark  is  not  suitable  for  this  tank  as  per  fish  combination.

As  Karthik  already  mentioned  loaches  might  be  a  problem  for  your  plants.

Anyway  keep  up  the  good  work.  Smile

 Hi  ...Thanks  for  the  encouragement.

Its  a  small  48L  tank.  I  thought  these  were  called  loaches  ..  not  disturbing  the  substrate  but  they  r  sticking  to  the  glass  most  of  the  time  ..algae  suckers  perhaps??

I  did  my  first  water  change  ...  still  there  is  a  lot  of  left  over  food  floating  around  ...  i  know  i  haven't  bought  all  the  equipment  but  what  do  we  use  to  clean  the  substrate  of  the  dirt?

bala  shark  ...  my  wifes  was  keen  as  it  looks  nice  ...

Happy  with  my  first  attempt  am  sure  their  will  be  some  mishaps  but  with  time  i  will  learn  to  maintain  it.

as  you  can  make  out  am  really  scared  after  the  water  change  ...  hope  its  not  dis  balanced.

 Hi  Aninda,
 Congratulations  on  your  first  tank!

However,  you  are  going  through  the  typical  'beginners  routine'.  A  good  lot  of  us  have  done  this,  so  its  not  anything  new...  just  seek  to  correct  your  way  forward.

First  of  all,  you  must  not  put  fish  into  a  freshly  setup  aquarium.  There  is  something  called  'nitrogen  cycle'  for  a  fish  tank  to  settle  down  &  be  conducive  for  fish.

Secondly,  you  have  too  many  fish  for  a  48l  tank.  Those  Bala  sharks  grow  to  more  than  a  foot  long,  and  are  fast  swimmers.  They  will  need  a  tank  of  atleast  4  or  5  feet  length.  The  Angel  fish  will  also  grow  big  and  needs  lots  of  space.  The  neons  &  guppies  are  fine.  I  think  the  'loach'  you  are  talking  about  is  an  otocinclus.  That  should  not  be  much  of  a  problem  either.

please  read  up  on  the  nitrogen  cycle  &  do  accordingly.  There  are  many  many  threads  here  on  IAH  and  thousands  of  them  all  over  the  internet.

If  you  have  food  floating  around,  you  are  overfeeding  the  fish.  Leftover  food  will  deteriorate  water  quality  very  rapidly.  Feed  only  as  much  as  they  eat  in  about  3  to  5  mins.  feed  twice  a  day.  if  you  have  any  leftovers,  take  it  off  using  a  net  or  something.

 Good  luck!  Thumb Up

 Thanks  Athreyan,

yes  i  read  abt  cyclying  the  tank   but  as  a  first  timer  you  r  too  excited  to  get  it  all  up  and  running  ..  which  is  what  even  i  did  ...  couldnt  keep  a  tank  with  no  fish  in  it  Razz

a  i  bought  a  vaccum  to  clean  the  leftovers  from  the  base...

Hoping  to  correct  things  way  forward  Thumbs Up

This  forum  is  def  quite  helpful.

 Welcome  to  the  hobby.

Its  good  to  be  excited  but  spare  a  thought  for  the  fish  that  will  needlessly  and  surely  die  if  you  dont  correct  matters  quickly.
It  cant  be  good  karma  for  you...   Smile

Bala  sharks  should  be  given  away  -  they  cannot  thrive  in  a  tank  your  size.
The  angels  will  make  short  work  of  any  smaller  fish  that  they  can  get

Please  do  read  up  on  the  nitrogen  cycle  and  why  you  should  not  add  fish  too  quickly  or  overstock  your  tank.
You  havent  mentioned  a  filter  but  I  hope  you  have  one.  Do  not  ever  clean  it  with  direct  tap  water.

Never  ever  clean  out  the  tank  completely  -  I  mean  do  not  take  out  all  fish  into  a  bucket   and  remove  everyhting  and  wash  before  putting  back.  I  mention  this  because  this  is  what  your  friendly  LFS  will  suggest.

Feed  very  sparingly.  fish  do  not  need  to  eat  as  we  do.  Even  once  a  day  feeding  is  enough.  there  should  be  no  food  leftover  at  all.

 Good  luck.

 Regards,
 Venkat

 Thanks  Jabba  &  venkat,

I  totally  agree,  dont  want  the  fish  to  suffer  and  die.  Not  a  Good  karma  and  def  not  a  good  feeling  ..

More  so  my  wife  might  not  be  even   keen  to  let  me  continue  this  hobby  so  have  to  be  careful.

I  hv  done  30%  water  change..using  tap  water  but  added  a  dechlorinator  +water  conditioner.

 Fishes  were  un  touched  :)

I  know  i  should  have  waited  for  the  tank  to  cycle  .

The  tank  has  a  inbuilt  filter  and  light  (13W)  but  am  sure  thats  not  the  best.

now  have  to  find  if  i  could  give  back  the  bala  and  the  angel  fish's.

The  LFS  asked  me  to  buy  liquid  bacteria  and  fertilizer  for  the  plants  but  i  didnt.

Should  i  go  for  it  or  wait  for  the  tank  to  mature??  plants  to  settle??
Also  should  i  check  for  maintaining  the  temperature?

Hiii  All....  Just  wanted  to  thank  the  forum  for  all  the  informative  posts.

its  been  6  months  into  the  hobby  and  i  know  for  sure  this  will  last  forever.

yes,   had  few  mishaps   with  fishes  but  i  take  it  as  part  of  learning.

All  my  Fishes  doing  just  fine   (  hv  some  tetras,  platys,  guppies  &  a  betta  and  cat  fish  )

One  aspect  am  really  not  able  to  manage  are  the  plants.

I  know  my  light  spec  is  low   (  13W)  and  no  C02  but  i  have  started  added  a  macro  fertilizer  few  drops   once  a  week  but  almost  no  plant  survives  even  moss  melted  away.(  tried  hair  grass,  mosses  etc)

Now  i  have  a  java  fern  but  even  thats  getting  black  marks  on  the  leave  with  no  new  leaf  yet.

So  my  question  to  the  forum  is  is  a  48L  13  W  tank  with  no  Co2  not  meant  for  planted  tank  or  am  i  doing  something  wrong  here.

 thanks  again

ROFL   ROFL  1  thing  no  1  will  tell  you  IS!  before  buying  fish  check  the  age  span  of  the  fish  on  the  net.

many  people  wonder  why  their  fish  die  just  after  a  few  weeks  Clapping

its  not  because  of  any  technical  problem...  its  only  that  it  has  reached  its  dying  age....  Thumbs Up

when  you  buy  any  fish  henceforth  be  ready  for  these  shocks.  Because  soon  you  will  hurry  and  buy  new  fishes  Chuckle   Chuckle  hiyahhahhaaaaaahhhhhaaaa  haaaaahhhhaaaaahhh  hooooooo  ho!
