This  is  not  to  discourage  you  from  fish-keeping  hobby,  but  in  all  honesty  alligator  gars  arent  suitable  for  any  aquarium/pond  setup.  I  recommend  you  not  to  buy  one  if  you  are  considering,  even  if  you  have  a  monster  setup  for  following  reasons.

It  was  never  meant  to  be  in  aquarium  trade  in  first  place,  you  cant  imagine  a  fish  that  potentially  grows  over  10'  inside  a  tank.  Some  greedy/highly  irresponsible/uneducated  people  push  such  monster  fish(arapiama,  large  catfish,  pacus,  etc)  into  the  trade.

Leave  all  the  parameters  aside,  its  a  pretty  robust  prehistoric  monster,  known  to  thrive  in  any  freshwater  ecosystem  be  it  fastflowing  rivers  to  stagnant  oxygen  deprived  pools-  the  most  important  'parameter'  being  tank  size.  Tell  me  how  can  you  keep  fish  that  easily  grows  over  5'  and  has  a  potential  for  outgrowing  any  reasonable  sized  koi  ponds?  How  long  can  you  keep  it,  3years,5years....?  Alligator  gars  easily  live  over  20years.

Its  entertaining  to  watch  it  rip  apart  and   gulp  down  prey  fish  on  videos/  might  as  well  kewl  (for  a  while)  to  keep  alligator  like  fish  for  the  inexperienced/unaware  hobbyists...but  truth  is  no  one  can  house  or  maintain  such  fishes  long  term.

I  have  seen  people  enthusiastically  buying  4-5"  baby  gars  from  highly  irresponsible  LFS,  then  in  order  to  maintain  it  people  upgrade  tanks(if  they  are  committed)  typically  starting  from  3ft  and  going  upto  6footer  tanks.  The  fish  in  no  time  outgrows  every  possible  setup  one  can  afford  and  in  the  end  it  gets  too  difficult  to  manage.  LFS  cant  take  back  such  fish  unless  theres  a  highly  unlikely/rare  opportunity  to  shift  it  into  a  customer's  pond.
In  desperate  times  I  have  seen  people  resorting  to  measures  like  releasing  them  into  natural  water  bodies(which  IMO  is  a  CRIME)  where  this  monster  of  a  fish  out-competes  the  native  species  to  the  point  of  extinction  within  that  habitat,  one  responsible  hobbyist  I  knew  ended  up  putting  down  a  4foot+  gar,  fish  he  has  been  raising  for  years.

They  are  strong  swimmers,  its  very  common  to  see  broken  aquarium  equipments  and  in  certain  cases  they  even  break  the  tanks  in  flight  response.

So  I  ask  you  whether  this  hassle  is  worth  it?

This  is  a  fascinating  hobby,  we  have  abundant  supply  of  properly  ornamental  fish  available  to  us  these  days,  you  can  do  a  ton  of  legitimate  assortment  of  setups  ranging  from(planted,  biotope,  marine,  paludarium,  compatible  collection  style  setups).  Then  why  waste  our  precious  time,  resources  and  floor  space  for  things  that  are  not  meant  to  be  in  aquariums?

P.S.  Please  before  you  create  a  thread/post,  go  to  respective  forum  from  the  list  of  subjects  and  post  within  that  respective  forum.  Its  not  appropriate  to  post  a  'monster  fish'  topic  in  a  'native  Indian  fish'  section.  It  doesnt  take  much  time.
