Fishes are caught and kept in cages at the same depth in the lake. The cage is raised, until the fish start swimming downwards. the cage is then left at this depth for a couple of days and the process is repeated till the fish acclimatize to shallow water. Then they are removed from the lake and shipped.
Adult Discus also have the same problem, that's the reason you reduce the water level when introducing the discus fish in tall tanks. Then you gradually raise the water level over a few hours to allow the discus to adjust to pressure. Baby discus do not have this problem. If you put adult discus from plastic cover after shipping into a tall tank they lie down flat on the bottom because they are stressed out due to change in pressure.
