 Hi,
Tried  this  recipe  today  for  my  Goldfishes, seems  to  work  well. This  is  the  recipe  for  the  feed
1)100  gms  Idli  rava, soaked  in  water  for  about  an  hour
 2)100  gms  prawns,50  gms  dried  prawns,wheat  germ,Palak,carrots,red  bell         pepper
 3)Spiulina  capsules,multivitamins.

Mix  the  prawns, dried  prawns, wheat  germ  and  all  the  veggies  and  the  medication  in  the  Rava  and  mix  it  well  in  the  mixer, pour  the  mixture  in  a  vessel  and  pressure  cook  the  mixture  for  about  20  min  without  the  whistle, feed  the  fishes  after  the  mixture  cools  down.

This  feed  does  not  cloud  the  water  and  is  readily  accepted  by  the  fishes. You  can  try  various  ingredients  for  various  species  of  fishes.

 with  warm  regards
 Shishir  kamat

Won't  the  vitamins  break  up  since  you  are  boiling  the  mixture  ??

There  are  some  vitamins  that  are  destroyed  by  heat:
 B1,  B5,  B6,  B12,  Folic  acid  and  vitamin  C.

I  dont  really  know  if  Vitamin  C  is  required  by  fish.

Anyway  as  long  as  you  feed  a  varied  mix  of  feeds  your  fish  will  be  ok.

 Hi,
Yes  i  agree  with  Atanu  and  Deepesh, would  there  be  any  alternative  method  of  adding  vitamins  to  the  feed?I  feel  this  feed  should  be  fed  once  a  day, the  other  feed  could  be  good  quality  pellets  to  make  up  for  the  lost  vitamins.

 Hi  Shishir,
Vitamin  C  is  essential  in  fish  food.  It  helps  in  bone  and  tooth  development,  healing  &  digestion.

Have  you  tried  the  Beef  Heart  recepie  ?  I  found  a  link  somewhere  here  on  this  site.  You  can  substitute  the  Beef  Heart  with  chicken,  Lamb  or  Goat  heart.  Its  very  effective  IME.

I  dont  think  Beef  Heart,  Chicken,  Lamb  or  Goat  Hearts  are  healthy  for  Goldies.  They  likes  vegei  diets  rather  than  NON  Veg.

Well,  some  fish  dont  produce  their  own  vitamin  C  so  you  are  better  off  giving  it.

Monkeys  (including  humans),  guinea  pigs,  bats  and  most  birds  need  vitamin  C  in  their  diet.

 Thanks  aquascapes  for  the  link.

I  was  taught  that  most  vertebrates  made  their  own  vitamin  C  but  I  had  no  idea  if  fish  too  were  included  in  this  group.

It  took  me  some  time  to  find  the  info  on  the  net  that  some  fish  do  need  vitamin  C.  But  your  link  was  the  best.

 Deepesh,
 I  remain  your  humble  friend!
 @Shishir,
I  want  to  fully  understand  the  use  of  rice  flour  (is  it  the  correct  term?)  Idli  rava?  Do  you  use  it  for  it's  binding  properties  or  for  some  other  reason?  I  would  urge  you  in  that  case  to  use  gelatin  or  agar  agar.

 Hi  Nauzer,
Rice  Atta  works  like  a  binder, the  whole  ingredients  is  pressure  cooked  which  similarly  looks  like  an  Idli,  which  is  also  easy  for  the  fish  to  digest

 Hi  Shishir,

How  long  have  you  been  feeding  this  recipe  to  your  GF?  also  are  you  trying  out  this  feed  only  as  a  variety  or  are  you  expecting  the  feed  to  enhance  the  colour/growth  of  your  GF?

 Hi  Bala,
I  have  been  experimenting  with  various  ingredients  for  my  goldfishes,I  feel  this  feed  will  increase  the  bulk  of  the  fish  as  well  as  colouration  since  it  contains  prawns  and  carrots, should  be  helpful  in  digestion  as  well  since  it  contains  vegetable  matter.

Really  ?  Maybe  meat  is  not  fit  for  Goldies  but  then  why  include  prawns  &  dried  prawns  in  their  food  if  they  don't  like  Non  Veg  ?  Because  including  meat  in  ther  diet  will  increase  their  bulk  &  increase  their  growth  rate,  right  ?

Again,  when  I  suggested  Heart  mix,  I  didn't  mean  it  to  be  the  base  diet.  Also  it  is  understood  that  these  recepies  are  meant  mainly  for  Discus  &  you  have  to  make  the  necessary  changes  in  the  recepie  to  suit  your  Goldies.

 Shishir,

Don't  you  think  the  rice  in  your  recepie  might  give  your  fish  bloat  ?  What  quantity  do  you  feed,  how  many  times  do  you  feed  ?
