PostPosted: Tue May 15, 2007 9:09 pm Post subject: Shipping Fish by Air Reply with quote

I  recently  shipped  some  fish  by  air  for  the  first  time  and  with  some  slight  problems  got  the  fish  to  its  recipient  safely.  However,  I  know  the  tension  I  had  while  shipping  the  fish  and  I  hope  this  will  help  some  of  the  members  who  haven't  shipped  by  air  before.

 You  will  need:

 1.  A  strong,  sturdy  cardboard  box.
 2.  Plastic  Bags  (size  depends  on  the  fish  size  and  number)  :  20"  x  10"  is  a  good  size  for  most  medium  sized  fish.
 3.  Rubber  bands
 4.  A  source  for  oxygen
 5.  Flight  schedules  for  the  recipient's  city
 6.  The  recipient's  Name,  Mobile  Number  and  Full  Address  as  on  his  DL,  Passport,  etc,  etc.
 7.  Blank  Paper,  Black  Marker

Double  bag  your  fish  and  fill  the  bag  up  to  1/3  full  of  water.  Use  good  judgment  while  deciding  on  number  of  fish  per  bag.  Putting  a  sheet  of  newspaper  in  between  two  bags  will  reduce  the  chances  of  bags  puncturing     and  also  reduce  the  flow  if  any  of  the  bags  leak.

Rule  of  thumb   -  Six  2"  fish  or  one  6"  fish  per  above  size  bag  for  an  8  hour  journey.

Pack  the  bags  up  with  oxygen  3  hours  prior  to  plane  departure.  Use  newspaper  as  padding  for  the  bags,  so  that  the  bags  do  not  shift  at  all.  Additional  protection  can  be  given  by  using  thermocol  sheets  as  lining  inside  the  box.

Add  some  extra  bags  and  rubber  bands  in  the  package  for  emergencies.

Tape  the  package  up  securely  using  packing  tape.  Go  over  the  edges  as  well  as  the  center  of  the  box  with  the  tape.

Tape  two  sheets  of   blank  paper  to  the  sides  of  the  box  and  write  the  Sender  and  Recipient's  addresses  and  phone  numbers.

Write  "Live  Fish"  in  Bold  letters  on  all  sides  of  the  box.

Take  it  to  your  local  airport  to  the  Airline  Cargo  Terminal  at  least  two  hours  before  the  flight  departs  and  check  it  in  as  Live  Fish.

Pay  the  charges  and  get  the  Air  Waybill  number.  You  will  need  the  Recipients  Name,  Telephone  Number  and  Address  as  on  his  ID.

SMS  the  recipient  the  Air  Waybill  number  and  Estimated  Time  of  Arrival.

The  recipient  will  need  to  take  his  ID  with  him  to  pick  up  the  fish.

 Just  my  81  paise.

Gurus,  feel  free  to  point  out  anything  I  have  missed  and  add  your  suggestions.

 Sorry,  forgot  about  charges.

Freight  is  charged  by  weight,  and  varies  from  airline  to  airline.  There  are  fixed  charges  on  weight  and  add  on  charges  which  I  have  no  idea  how  they  calculate.

An  approximate   guess  is  Rs  60/-  to  Rs  80/-  per  Kg.

 Confused  ........  whats  this  yaar.

I  am  so  much  confused..  but  anyway,  many  many  thanx  for  the  info,  this  will  help  lot  of  people  regarding  sending  live  fishes.

Almost  same  things  goes  for  train  booking  also  except  SMSing  waybil  no,  here  the  sender  has  to  courier  the  RR  copy  to  Recipients  or  simply  they  can  put  this  on  box  also...  But  courering  the  RR  is  better  than  puting  this  on  Box.

If  yor  are  sending  any  live  stock  by  train  then  you  have  to  put  the  RR  copy  in  box,  otherwise  for  dry  stuffs  your  can  courier  it.  Smile

 Hi  pradeep
it  was  a  new  experience  for  u  and  me  both...
Just  something  i  would  like  to  add
Make  sure  your  box  does  not  leak  at  any  cost  because  we  got  a  earful  from  the  cargo  authorities  as  the  box  was  leaking  and  it  had  spoilt  a  lot  of  other  cargo
Plus  once  they  noticed  water  leaking  they  made  me  open  the  box  to  check  inside
And  something  even  more  rediculous  they  were  asking  me  to  pay  octroi..i  just  told  them  i  had  no  money  and  if  they  want  me  to  wait  for  someone  to  get  the  money  while  am  having  a  leaky  bag  with  an  expensive  fish  inside  it  would  be  totally  their  responsibility
