I  hope  to  get  a  small  batch  of  fish  and  shrimp  from  the  Tambraparni  river  tomorrow.

The  fish  will  be  cyprinids  that  are  around  2  inches  and  the  shrimp  must  be  1-2  inches.

Can  you  give  me  some  do's  and  donts  on  conditioning  wildcaughts  so  that  i  dont  suffer  any  casualities.  These  have  been  packed  and  sent  by  a  local  fisherman  and  i  have  told  him  to  pick  the  healthiest  and  not  crowd  them  and  use  O2.  i  have  sent  the  bags  from  here  and  i  am  sure  he  will  do  the  packing  well.

 thanks  in  advance

I  think  covering  all  the  sides  of  the  tank  and  only  leaving  the  top  (with  glass  cover)  to  receive  light  would  help  until  the  fish  settle  down.
Lots  of  hiding  places  might  help  as  well.

 Regards,
 Venkat

 Hi  Pradeep,

Have  you  taken  notes  of  the  water  parameters  from  your  earlier  trips?  you  know  how  bad  the  Chennai  water  is.  I  don't  think  the  water  temperature  will  be  an  issue  but  the  hardness  and  PH  might  pose  you  a  challenge.

Good  luck,  looking  forward  for  the  snaps

 Regards
 Bala

 Hi  PC
Your  best  bet  with  the  shrimp/fish  is  to

 1.use  heavily  aerated  old  water

 2.  To  acclimatize  float   the  packet  of  your  fish/shrimp  in  the  tank   with  the  old  water,  keep  the  packet  open  and  slowly  add  very  little  by  little  water  from  the  tank  to  the  packet,  in  about  five  minute  intervals.  Do  this  for  about  half  hour  atleast  .

 3.  release  the  fish/shrimp  into  the  tank,  For  this  allow  the  fish  or  the  shrimp  to  swim  into  the  tank  on  their  own,  all  you  will  need  to  do  is  to  tilt  the  packet  very  slowly,  a  45  deg  angle  should  be  fine.

 4.  excess  or  old  water  in  the  packet  can  be  thrown  out.

This  is  how  i  do  it  for  wild  caught  fish/shrimp  and  very  rarely  have  a  problem,
hope  this  method  will  help  you  too.

 All  the  best

 Regards

Oops  Almost  forgot  don't  feed  them  for  a  couple  of  days  and  keep  the  aerator  on  full  blast.
For  the  shrimp  a  piece  of  wood  with  moss  or  algae  will  be  great  as  they  will  look  for  cover.

Great  news  PC.  You  are  deemed  to  be  the  expert.

Wonder  from  where  the  poor  local  fisherman  will  get  his  hands  on  O2  ?  Smile

thanks  Mayur,  the  shrimp  i  am  sure  will  do  fine  -  the  first  time  i  got  them  they  were  jammed  and  overcrowded  and  yet  there  were  no  casualities!  Its  the  puntius  i  am  worried  about.

Trevor  -  there  is  a  typo  in  your  post...  me?  expert?  not  just  yet.  will  lay  my  claim  to  the  title  when  i  am  able  to  salvage  my  fish  eggs  from  the  loaches  and  raise  them!

always  kept  fish  that  have  been  acclamatized,  this  is  the  first  time  and  i  want  to  do  it  right!

Great.  If  he  has  O2  cylinders  we  will  soon  have  to  get  him  to  pack  and  send  stuff  to  Bangalore.  Smile

 Hi  PC,
Usually  4ppm  KMNO4  is  safer  for  goldfishes  but  not  sure  for  smaller  fishes.May  be  you  need  to  start  from  a  very  less  ppm  dosing.
Here  is  the  link  which  states  usage  of  KMNO4  dosing  for  Goldies  from  our  resident  Goldfish  expert  Shishir  Very Happy

 Link

 Hope  this  help!  Thumb Up

I  was  checking  with  Rahul  on  the  same  topic  ytd..

 His  suggestion...Quote

I  never  medicate  my  fish  unless  I  see  visible  signs  of  disease.  Then,  I  treat  the  symptoms.

The  best  thing  to  do  is  keep  them  in  a  quarantine  tank  for  3-4  weeks  and  observe  them.  Make  sure  the  tank  is  well  aerated  and  covered,  oxygen  stress  and  jumping  are  the  2  leading  causes  of  fatality  in  freshly  collected  fish.

You  may  add  a  little  salt  (1  teaspoon  per  gallon)  to  help  recharge  body  slime.

 Unquote

I  acclimatized  the  fishes  by  dumping  the  fishes  into  a  bucket  and  then  slowly  adding  water  from  the  quarentine  tank  ...Had  very  limited  mortalities  and  the  fishes  are  doing  pretty  well..
