 Hi  friends,

I  am  planning  to  relocate  to  Kolkata  from  Hyderabad,  soon.

I  want  to  know  few  things  regarding  availability,  there.

Where  can  I  find  CO2  cylinders.  Will  I  be  able  to  buy  one  or  I  have  to  rent?

Pls  pm  me  the  price  of  a  9kg  cylinder.

Also,  how  do  I  carry  the  tanks  (4),  plants,  drift  woods  and  all  the  items?  My  company  will  pay  for  all  relocation  cost.

 Thanks  in  advance.

 Dev.

Sell  the  tanks.  Get  new  ones.  Shipping  four  large  glass  boxes  across  the  country  is  :
 -Too  expensive  by  air.
 -Too  risky  by  land.
Keep  your  filters,  pumps,  dry  items  with  you.
Sell  most  of  the  plants  except  the  ones  you  find  are  rare  or  unavailable.
Ditto  for  fish.  Keep  them  only  if  you  have  sentiments  for  them.

 Plan  for  the  transportation  delay.
Plants  will  survive  when  packed  for  a  few  days.  Fish  won't.

Dev:  finally  you  are  going  back  to  Kolkata.  Lucky  You.  Follow  the  guidance  as  Pradeep  said.  He  is  right.  Carrying  the  Tank  is  not  a  good  idea.  Sell  them  off  and  get  new  tanks  their.

One  of  my  friend  moved  to  Hydrabad  2  days  ago.  He  did  the  same.  Sold  out  the  tank  and  kept  all  the  fishes  with  an  LFS  for  couple  of  days.  He  will  build  a  new  tank  there  and  then  the  Delhi  LFS  will  send  him  the  fishes  by  Air.  You  can  do  the  same,  if  you  have  good  rappo  with  any  of  the  LFS.

In  Orkut,  there  is  a  community  called  Kolkata-Aquarium.  Most  of  the  active  members  are  student  there,  so  they  can  guide  you,  where  to  get  good  stuffs  in  cheap  in  kolkata.  Otherwise  let  me  know,  I  can  give  you  some  contacts.  And  last  but  not  the  least,  we  have  a  great  guy  called  ROCKY  there  to  help  you  out.

A  pre  welcome  greetings  from  me  Thumb Up  Need  not  to  worry  in  Calcutta,  Bandhu.  We  all  Calcutta  IAHians  will  love  to  help  you  out.  As  already  said  by  Pradeep  ...  will  be  better  if  you  follow  his  instruction.

 Dev,
I  reallocated  from  Hyderabad  to  Kolkata  in  June  last  year.  I  tried  to  sell  my  tanks,  but  did  not  get  any  buyer.  So  I  dismentled  them  and  sent  them  with  the  household  items.  Few  of  the  glass  panels  were  broken  badly,  so  it  is  not  worth  trying.
I  sold  of  my  live  stocks  and  plants  there.
Don't  worry  about  the  live  stocks  in  Kolkata,  you  will  get  much  better  stocks  here  compared  to  hyderabad  in  terms  of  quality  as  well  as  price.
If  you  have  any  exotic  plants,  carry  them  with  you.

 Dear  Deb
Realy  lucky  to  back  Kolkata.  As  the  other  Iahians  said  I  also  asserted  the  same  view,  not  to  transport  the  glasses.  Only  the  decorative  material  you  can  carry  with  you.  In  Kolkata  you  will  find  everything  from  fishes  to  plants.  AND  when  there  is  Rocky  and  Galif  St.  you  need  not  worry  about  anything.

 @  Pradeep,

Thanks  a  l  ot  for  your  valueable  tips.  I  will  follow  them.

 2Tirthankar

Thanks  dude.  To  be  very  honest  and  candid,  I  have  actually  mixed  feeling  reg  relocating  back  to  Kolkata.  I  have  so  many  fond  memories  of  Hyderabad  that  it  is  becoming  difficult  to  think  that  I  am  leaving  the  city  for  good.

 @  Rocky

How  can  I  forget  Rocky  the  Great.  But  buying  your  foreign  cylinders  may  not  be  possible  as  I  move  on  shoe  string  budgets.

There  fore,  I  am  still  worried  about  the  availability  and  cost  of  a  9  kg  Co2  cylinder  in  Kolkata.

 @  Sibesh

I  was  thinking  of  dismantling  the  tanks  and  carrying  them  to  kolkata  thru  the  surface  transport.  I  was  planning  to  wrap  them  with  thermocol  sheets  on  all  side  with  intermidiate  thermocol  support.  1  glass  sheet  then  1  thermocol  sheet  then  another  glass  sheet,  like  wise  and  with  thermocol  on  the  front  and  the  back  side  as  well.

What  does  the  form  think  on  this?  Is  it  worth  taking  the  chance?

I  am  risking  1  or  two  brken  glass  sheets  as,

I  will  not  get  any  buyer  right  now.
If  I  sell  it  to  LFS  they  will  pay  me  scrap  value
Plus  I  will  get  the  oppertunity  of  mantling  the  tanks  by  myself  when  I  get  the  goods  in  Kolkata.  This  is  something,  I  have  been  planning  to  do  for  a  long  time  but  have  nevr  had  the  oppertunity  before...

 Thanks,

 Dev.

 @  Kaushik,

Ya,  I  am  lucky  that  I  am  returning  to  my  home  town  where  I  was  born  and  brought  up  and  had  spent  the  initial  28  yrs  of  my  life...I  am  sure  it  will  be  nice  to  be  back  among  friends,  relatives  and  wellwishers..

But,  I  do  not  agree  to  the  myth  of  Galif  street,  that  it  is  shoppers  paradise  and  what  not...After  hearing  a  lot  of  praise  about  the  place,  I  went  to  Gallif  Street  last  time  I  went  to  Kolkata  ie,  some  3  months  back...the  sellers  there  have  lots  of  dry  stuff  and  usual  tried  and  tested  and  bored  to  death  variety  of  fishes  but  do  not  have  any  high  end  products...what  pained  me  most  was  the  lack  of  related  and  adequate  knowledge  reg  the  well  keeping  of  the  hobby  and  their  business...some  charlie  was  trying  to  sell  a  weird  looking  water  weed  claiming  it  to  be  Java  Moss...hence  it  was  not  at  all  a  satifying  trip  to  say  the  least.

Sorry,  if  I  have  unintensionally  hurt  some  one  feelings  but  I  could  not  digest  the  false  promises  that  Gallif  Street  seems  to  make  to  an  aquarist.

 Dev,
I  did  the  packing  exactly  the  way  you  are  thinking  !  But  still  few  of  the  panel  borke.  So  it's  like  playing  a  gamble.
I  did  exactly  what  you  are  planning,  made  my  own  tanks  from  those  panels.

About  Gallif  street  as  a  matter  of  fact  for  all  such  open  market,  you  will  get  great  stuff  damm  cheap  if  you  know  it.  Nobody  is  there  to  educate  you  or  help  you.

 @  Dev  and
 @Sibesh
Agree  with  you  fully.  GalifSt  .  is  the  paradise  for  Beginners  and  not  for  the  Seasoned   one.  More  over  the  sellers  going  after  money  and  not  to  educating  the  hobbyist  and  the  derth  of  knowledge  is  perennial. But  Im  happy  that  you  are  going  back  to  your  home  land,  And  I  cherish  the  the  same  dream  to  be  fulfilled  in  future.

If  you  want  to  dismantle  and  go  ahead  with  shipping,  there  is  nothing  stopping  you.  Perhaps  you  can  give  us  a  writeup  on  how  to  ship  an  aquarium  cross  country  safely.

But  consider  the  costs  involved  in  this.
 You  will  be  spending  :
Time/Money  to  dismantle  the  tanks  +
Money  to  ship  the  glass  +
Money  to  reassemble  the  tanks  +
Replacement  costs  if  any  breakage  occurs.

Compare  this  with  selling  the  tanks  to  a  fellow  hobbyist  for  a  price,  and  then  buying  new  glass  and  putting  some  new  tanks  together  and  You  can  still  put  them  together  yourself  if  you  like.

IMO,  if  the  tanks  are  less  than  3',  give  it  a  try.  Anything  over  3'  and  I  would  say  both  shipping  it  and  the  breakage  chances  are  unreasonable.

It's  not  only  for  Calcutta. The  scenario  is  same  all  over  India  I  think.  Except  very  few  LFS  there  are  no  one  who  have  in  depth  knowledge  in  this  hobbie.  So  selfhelp  is  the  best  help.  Start  lurking,  you  will  find  something  good  there  also.

For  selling  the  tanks.  Post  on  the  WTS  section  on  this  site,  may  be  u'll  get  lucky  with  another  hobbyist,  unless  the  Glass  is  so  valuable  that  u  dont  mind  dismantling  them  &  re-assembling  them  (swarowski  crystal  ???)

Just  joking,  don't  mean  to  offend  you.  Drinking

All  kind  of  goods  are  available.  Get  in  touch  with  Lala  &  give  him  my  reference,  he  will  get  you  whatever  you  need.  Generally  LFS  dont  keeps  hi  end  goods  there.  On  special  order  they  are  able  to  arrange  that  or  come  to  my  place  to  buy  Hi  End  products.

Well,  moving  on  a  shoe  string  budget  doesnt  hold  me  back  from  getting  quality  products,  may  be  it  takes  more  time  than  others.  At  the  same  time,  quality  to  me  does  not  come  with  added  baggage  of  frills.  I  hope  you  understand  my  point,  Rocky.   Smile

I  request  the  forum  to  tell  me  if  I  can  find  normal,  no  frills  attached,  9kg  Co2  cylinders  in  kolkata?  and  at  what  cost?   Sad

If  I  dont  get  the  answer  fast,  then,  I  have  no  option  but  to  buy  and  carry  1  cylinder  from  Hyderabad  along  with  me.  Sad

 Cheers,

 Dev.
