 Hi  Guys

 I  have  a  36x18x18  Tank.

Flora:  Anubias,  Vals,  Crypts  and  Lots  of  Moss.

Current  Lighting:  Two  15  Watts  OSRAM  CFL's.  This  provides  less  that  1  wpg  which  i  would  like  to  change  to  1.5-2.0  wpg.....Would  like  a  CFL  options  itself....please  suggest  based  on  the  flora  which  would  be  the  best  CFL  i  can  go  for.  Thanks.

Running  a  50G  tank  only  on  CFL  is  not  an  good  idea.  Heating  will  be  problem.  But  if  you  really  want  to  stick  to  CFL  only  then  go  for  4x23watt  with  very  good  mirror  reflector.

I  would  sugest  you  to  go  for  4nos  2  feet  T8.  It  will  give  you  a  proper  distribution  of  light  all  over  the  tank.  And  Cost  will  be  same  as  CFL.

 Hi  Tirtha

Thanks  for  the  reply......pardon  my  ignorance.....but  could  you  please  elaborate  on  T8  ....   is  it  available  in  the  local  electrical  store?  Also  if  you  could  PM  me  an  approx  cost  the  entire  T8  fitting  you  have  suggested  might  cost  it  would  be  great......just  to  ensure  that  i  dont  get  conned   Very Happy

 Hi  Seetharam

May  we  know  why  only  CFLs?  Then  may  be  you  could  get  better  options  based  on  your  reason  for  CFLs  as  a  choice.

 Regards

Get  2-3  nos  of  36W  PLLs.  Should  solve  your  problem.

T8  is  the  normal  tube  lights.  Which  is  bit  thinner  than  old  tube  lights.  You  will  get  a  full  set  (Tube+Holder+Balast)  of  a  2  feet  T8  at  a  cost  of  23  watt  CFL  may  be  lesser  than  that.  Try  to  use  Philips  6500K  tubes  which  will  produce  white  light.

And  you  will  get  it  in  all  the  electrical  shop.

 Hi  Seetharam

Â You'll  require  4-5  T8s  for  2wpg.  36W  PLL,  as  suraj  mentioned,  will  be  a  better  option  you  can  go  with  2  of  them.  These  will  be  about  18inches  in  lenght.  The  initial  cost  is  higher  than  a  CFL.  But  as  compared  to  5  18W  T8  tubes  it  will  work  out  cheaper.  One  thing  make  sure  that  the  distance  between  the  PLLs  and  the  water  surface  is  about  5"-6"  and  the  ventalation  is  good  in  the  hood/  fixture.

 Regards

Two  55  Watt  PLLs  if  you  want  moderate  lighting.  Wanna  grow  some  hi  lighting  plants?  Then  go  in  for  four  55  Watt  PLLs.

Look  out  for  SAmson,  they  make  7000K  55  Watt  bulbs.

Or  you  could  settle  for  6500  K  Philips  55  Watts.  Though  the  CRI  is  only  80  plus,  they  are  realy  good.

 Hi

Just  to  add  to  your  choices,  there  is  one  more  option  24W  T5HOs  you  get  themn  in  8000k,  6500k(CRI  90+)  and  4000k(CRI  90+).  The  initial  cost  is  high  in  this  but  the  results  are  very  good.  If  you  need  any  help  call  me  on  my  cell  phone.

 Hi  Guys

Thanks  a  lot  for  all  your  inputs.

@  Tirtha  -  Thanks  for  clarifying  the  details  for  T8.  Will  look  at  that  option.

@  Harshal  -  The  reason  i  am  looking  at  CFL's  is  because  the  hood  i  currently  have  is  provisoned  to  hold  2  Bulb  Holders  and  i  am  assuming  that  trying  to  change  that  will  mean  making  modifications  to  the  hood  and  may  also  be  a  bit  heavy  on  my  pocket  as  well.

@  Suraj  -  Thanks  for  your  input.  Will  look  at  the  PLL  option.

@  Nitin  -  Nope  not  planning  for  any  hi  lighting  plants.  Not  for  this  tank  atleast.  Hence  have  gone  in  for  Flora  which  need  minimum  light  requirements.

Chuckle  Well  i  am  willing  to  bear  the  headache  if  it  will  result  in  a  good  looking  tank  .....  im  still  a  novice  when  it  comes  to  Planted  Aquarium  Requirements......  Have  burnt  my  fingers  by  trying  my  hand  at  keeping  high  requirement  plants  like  Hair  Grass  in  my  current  setup  (There  was  not  a  single  piece  of  it  in  2  weeks  )......  So  now  decided  to  start  out  from  the  basics  by  keeping  low  requirment  flora.....had  gone  through  previous  posts  on  Lighting  requirements  and  that  totally  confused  the  hell  outta  me....hence  started  a  new  thread   Very Happy

Well,  for  a  US  67G  tank  having  midium  2+w  requirement,  what  is  the  best  light  option.

 Tank  specs  -  3x2(h)x18  ft.

Pls  excuse  me  Seetharam,  as  I  have  no  intensions  of  hiijacking  your  thread,  just  wanted  to  ask  this  question.
