 Hi  all,

 I  am  new  to  marine  tanks  and  haven't  kept  any.  But  by  chance  came  across  a  fish  called  Cow  fish.
 Have  any  one  kept  it  in  their  tanks.  Please  share  your  experiences.
 for  people  who  are  interested  to  know  more:

 Vijay,

 I  have  seen  these  fish  and  read  a  lot  about  them.

 When  spooked  they  release  a  toxin  which  will  kill  all  life  in  the  aquarium  including  themselves.

 I  have  a  pic  somehwhere  in  my  comp.  I'll  post  it.  Ok  here  it  is  -

 Hi  there,
 I  have  kept  cowfish  a  few  times  and  the  are  very  hardy.  Add  a  unique  charm  to  the  aquarium  because  of  their  shape  and  odd  swimming  motion.

 Till  now  i  have  not  faced  any  such  problem  with  them  and  am  actually  looking  to  get  one  for  my  bigger  marine  tank.
 Cheers  !

 Thanks  Madanji.
 I  am  relatively  new  to  the  Marine  fishes  hopefully  might  take  a  long  time  for  me  to  jump  into  this.

 Madanji  is  the  fish  you  have  posted  of  the  same  family  as  the  pictures  in  the  link  as  both  seem  to  vary  a  lot  in  their  physical  look.

 All  the  best  Vidul.

 In  the  oceans  their  toxin  is  not  so  fatal  to  all  around  as  it  gets  diluted.  In  the  confines  of  an  aquarium  it  is  deadly.

 I  have  heard  they  grow  to  about  1  foot  or  more  in  length.  Have  to  check  on  this  though.

 I  am  not  sure  of  the  family  etc.,
 This  fish  I  saw  at  the  Under  Water  World  in  Sentosa,  Singapore.

 It  was  labelled  as  a  Cowfish  with  all  other  details  about  it.  I  don't  remember  the  scientific  name.  Will  have  to  look  through  my  books  and  magazines  to  find  it  or  the  net.

 Madan,  the  pic  you  posted  looks  more  like  an  Acanthuroid  (surgeon/tang)

 Cowfish/boxfish  are  Ostraciids,  related  to  puffers...

 Totally  Avoidable!  These  fish  release  toxin  when  are  in  stress  which  can  be  anything  from  bad  water  contitions  till  being  troubled  by  any  other  fish.  This  is  their  natural  way  of  protection  wherein  they  release  toxin  which  kills  everyhting  in  the  tank  including  the  cow  fish  himself.  If  this  happens  u  have  to  restart  the  tank.  The  toxin  is  also  released  if  the  fish  dies  in  your  tank.

 Regards

 All  the  money  I  had  have  been  eaten  by  the  cichlids  :evil:

Hey  Jenny  could  you  shed  some  light  on  your  knowledge  of  the  toxins  emitted  by  marine  fish.

 Hi  Vijay!
 All  the  salient  features  about  cowfish  have  already  been  covered  here.  So,  I  shall  provide  you  with  information  that  has  been  omitted.  When  I  first  saw  the  heading,  "cowfish",  the  first  thing  that  leapt  to  my  mind  was...  TETRADONTIFORMES!!!!  Smile

 Tetra  =4
 Dont  =  teeth

 Cowfish  belong  to  the  same  family  as  Puffers  and  boxfishes,  as  Retro  mentioned.

 Most  Tetradontiformes  secrete  a  biotoxin  known  as  'tetradotoxin'.  This  Tetradotoxin,  a  neurotoxin  is  further  classified  into  various  other  toxins  based  on  the  source  of  secretion.

 Since  you  asked  me  about  biotoxins  of  marine  fish,  the  pufferfish  is  a  very  interesting  fish.  I  have  had  the  privelege  of  holding  one  in  my  palm  where  it  inflated  it's  body  like  a  balloon.  It  does  that  to  startle  it's  enemies.

 Chefs  in  the  East  are  paid  handsomely,  especially  the  ones  who  are  authorised  to  prepare  "fugu",  a  pufferfish  delicacy.  The  Chefs  first  sample  the  dish  in  front  of    the  customer,  and  when  no  ill-effects  are  seen,  the  customers  eat  it  themselves.  Rolling Eyes  I  am  currently  unable  to  recall  a  funny  limerick  about  fugu  that  I  used  to  know.  Shall  rack  my  brains  a  little  harder.

 I  do  know  of  other  organisms  that  release  toxins.  Perhaps  if  you  come  for  one  of  the  ASK  meetings  (  I  presume  you're  in  Bangalore  as  your  username  says  Vijayblr),  I  can  bring  along  a  Molluscan  Shell,  Conus  that  produces  a  venomous  and  deadly  biotoxin.

Quote:

 This  is  all  because  of  Trevor.  So  much  for  wanting  to  keep  a  very  low  profile.    Razz

   Smile
 Jenny
