Book Review: Ornamental Fishes of the Western Ghats of India.
Iggy Tavares - ( Published with Iggy's consent)
The publication of Ornamental Fishes of the Western Ghats of India by T.V. Anna Mercy, A. Gopalakrishnan, D. Kapoor & W.S. Lakra is timely, since many indigenous fish of India are now becoming available in the UK and Europe.
The Western Ghats run along the West coast of India from Kochi (Cochin) through Goa to Mumbai (Bombay) and just beyond. Rivers arising in the Ghats flow westward to the sea but some flow eastwards, but all contain a large diversity of fish. There are also numerous lakes and ponds all of which contain fish. Of the 300 species occurring in the waterways of the Western Ghats, half of them are possibly suitable for life in the aquarium and these 147 species in 32 families are described in the book.
Each species is awarded at least a page that contains a photograph or colour illustration. One box contains the common name in English, Malayalam ad sometimes Tamil, while another hold details of the ray counts in the major fins. Then follows a description under Distinguishing characters, Colour and size, Food and feeding, Sexual dimorphism and breeding, Aquarium requirements and finally Behaviour in captivity.
As might be expected, the Family Cyprinidae encompassing barbs, rasboras, danios and others form the largest group with sixty three fish in the book. Among the twenty three barbs described is the colorful Puntius densonii and the flamboyant looking Puntius exclamato and Puntius filamentosus. Other colourful fish within this family belong to the genera Barillius, Chela, Danio and Rasbora.
In the families Balitoridae and Cobitidae are many colourful loaches, the perfect small size for the community aquarium. Some that caught my eye from the excellent images in this section include the Moreh laoch, (Acanthocobitis moreh), Denisonii loach (Schistura denisoni denisoni), Triangularis loach (Mesonemachelius triangularis) and Malabar loach (Lepidocephalus thermalis).. Colourful catfish in the Bagridae family included Horabagrus brachysoma, which does get rather large.
Of particular interest to me are the fish in the families Nandidae and Cichlidae. The Malabar Catopra (Prisolepis marginata) is well described over three pages and spawns cichlid style. True cichlids found in the Western Ghats are the Green Chromide (Etroplus suratensis), the Orange Chromide (E maculatus) and the Canara Pearlspot (E caranensis) all of which are sometimes available in the UK.
Many more species of fish in various families are described in the book. Not all are suitable for the general aquarium such as the interesting needlefish and halfbeaks in the families Belonidae and Hemiramphidae that grow large and eat other fish. However there are lots of other beautiful small fish described from the spiketail paradise fish to glassfish and even panchax.
The authors have aimed the book “at helping the ornamental fish hobbyist, breeders, traders, exporters, students and researchers to get an insight into the various indigenous ornamental fishes in India, their aquarium requirements, food and feeding habits under captivity and their behaviour in aquarium conditions.†I think that the authors have accomplished their aim and I would recommend this book to all those interested in identifying and keeping Indian fish in the aquarium.
This book is printed on thick, glossy paper with a glossy soft cover and is unlike other Indian books printed on poor quality paper. The book, which is 24 x 18 cm in size, runs to 253 pages including maps of India, foreword, preface and contents. The cost of the book is 900.00 rupees. It can be ordered through Mr. P. J. Singh, e-mail: <nbfgrlibrary> or <nbfgr> for details on how to pay.

Im sorry I haven't updated this thread for sometime!
I know some of you have been asking about this book recently but unfortunately I do not have anymore copies left.
If there are sufficient people who still need it, then I can try and order again.
The books price is listed as 900/- in the NBFGR website and not 950/- so i'm a little confused if they have changed the rate.
