PostPosted: Wed Aug 06, 2008 11:37 pm Post subject: Coimbatore and Kiran Koppikar Reply with quote

 Hello

I  had  to  visit  Coimbatore  for  a  day  last  week  on  some  official  work  and  I  took  this  opportunity  to  visit  Mr.Kiran  Koppikar.

I  had  never  met  him  before  but  had  spoken  to  him  few  times  on  the  phone.
After  the  meeting  with  my  client,  I  had  the  rest  of  the  day  free.  I  called  up  Mr.Kiran  and  we  decided  to  meet  in  the  evening.  This  was  my  first  visit  to  Coimbatore.   Mr.Koppikar  was  kind  enough  to  pick  me  up  and  take  me  to  his  house.
Mr.Kiran  is  a  nice  gentleman  and  was  very  keen  to  share  his  experiences  with  me.
On  reaching  his  house  I  found  that  he  had  lined  up  glass  tanks  outside  his  house  under  a  shade  net.  This  setup  housed  Variety  of  tetras.
Mr.Kiran  claims  to  have  at  least  a  dozen  varieties  of  tetras  at  any  point  of  time.
He  breeds  them  himself.  I  picked  up  a  dozen  cardinals  and  a  dozen  rummy  noses.

This  is  the  second  time  I  am  buying  fishes  from  Mr.Koppikar.  The  last  time  I  bought  was  2  yrs  back  and  they  are  still  going  strong.
I  have  bought  cardinals  and  rummy  noses  the  last  time  too  and  they  have  grown  to  jumbo  size  now.
Mr.Kiran  sends  across  fishes  on  order  to  Bangalore.

I  also  found  this  interesting  Archer  fish  in  the  tank  outside.

Apparently  this  is  a  tank  bred  archer  fish.

Every  visitor  to  the  Koppikar  residence  gets  a  demo  of  the  archers  archery.  Mr.  Kiran  sticks  some  insects  on  the  inside  of  the  tank  surface  that  is  above  water  and  the  archer  shoots  all  of  them  bang  on  target.
I  was  not  very  fortunate  and  could  not  see  the  archer’s  archery  skills  on  that  day.  He  was  not  in  a  mood  maybe.
I  was  also  surprised  to  find  the  Archer  kept  in  100%  fresh  water.  More  surprising  it  was  kept  with  Discus  and  neon  tetra.  I  immediately  fell  in  love  with  this  guy.  Mr.  Kiran  wont  part  with  this  potential  Olympic  gold  medalist  but  has  promised  to  get  me  one  soon.

I  regretted  not  carrying  my  trusty  Olympus  camera  that  day.  Actually  this  trip  was  planned  in  a  hurry  and  in  the  last  minute,  I  just  picked  up  a  junk  point  and  shoot  camera  that  belonged  to  the  office.   I  had  never  used  it  before.  Being  used  to  SLR  this  camera  was  total  failure.
Sorry  for  the  poor  quality  of  images.
What  I  saw  next  wanted  me  to  come  back  and  drown  the  point  and  shoot  camera.
I  saw  a  planted  tank  that  made  me  sit  back  and  maintain  complete  silence  and  only  stare  at  this  piece  of  art.
I  don’t  get  impressed  very  easily  but  this  tank  was  beautiful.  I  always  believe  the  definition  of  a  planted  tank  to  be  â€œas  if  the  aquascape  always  existed  there  and  some  one  built   a  glass  box  around  it”.
 This  tank  was  just  that.

 Another  view

The  plants  used  are  Bolbitis  and  Pillia  and  only  one  Crypt  and  Anubius  Coffeefolia.

 Excellent  job.

I  was  so  involved  in  catching  and  bagging  fishes   that  I  forgot  to  take  the  pictures  of  the  rest  of  the  setup.
And  just  when  I  wanted  to  take  more  pictures,  there  was  a  power  cut.  Ending  any  chances  of  photography.  It  was  late  evening  and  My  bus  was  also  leaving  soon.

Anyways  maybe  I  can  plan  a  trip  next  time  and  take  better  pictures.

Thought  I  should  share  this  experience  with  you  guys.

 regards

 Niranjan

Hope  I  can  go  to  Coimbatore  to  meet  Kiran.

Many  months  ago  I  bought  40  cardinal  tetras  from  him  for  my  80  gallon  tank.  He  shipped  them  from  Coimbatore  to  Mumbai  in  impeccable  condition.

The  fish  were  absolutely  amazing...great  colour,  excellent  size  and  health....I  still  have  these  cardinals  with  me...they  are  doing  just  great...

Thanks  Kiran  and  hope  to  see  you  soon...

Whenever  I  thought  about  Tetra,  I  thought  about  Mr.  Kiran.  I  never  got  anything  from  him,  but  heard  a  lot  good  about.

He  never  posted  these  hidden  treasures  in  IAH.  It's  an  ultimate  planted  tank.

@Niranjan:  Thanks  for  sharing.  Please  carry  your  camera  next  time.  Will  be  waiting  for  loads  of  picture.

Talking  to  Kiran  is  always  a  pleasure  and  every  time  I  meet  him,  I  spend  hours  chatting  away  and  is  a  treasure  trove  of  info!!!

Also  every  time  I  visit  his  home  his  planted  tank  is  completely  redone  and  each  time  more  stunning  than  the  previous  time

Infact  it  was  after  seeing  Kiran's  tank  that  I  setup  my  first  planted  Tank.

His  fishes  are  always  in  top  condition  and  most  of  my  tetras  as  from  Kiran!

BTW  I  have  witnessed  the  archery  skills  of  that  Archer  and  quite  a  good  one  at  that   Smile

people  visiting  Coimbatore  should  not  miss  a  chance  to  visit  his  home...

BTW  he  also  has  a  very  interesting  collection  of  plants  and  a  cute  Terrier

I  agree  with  all,  Kiran  is  a  real  nice  person  to  be  associated  with.  I  got  my  Cardinals,  Harlequins  and  Wood  Shrimps  from  him  and  they  are  all  in  excellent  condition.  He  has  sent  me  pictures  of  his  planted  tank  and  they  are  breathtaking,  definitely  world  class.

 Cheers

I  had  the  privilege  of  meeting  him  and  his  better  half.  Suraj(aka  nature_lover)  introduced  me.  Next  time  around  his  place  will  be  on  the  top  of  my  agenda.  I  had  said  so  then.  Hope  to  make  it  sooner  than  later.
