Hi all
Some time back there was a thread about using gluteraldehyde as co2 source for plants.
http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2917&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
A good many people started using it.
Pls post your views and whether you are still using it.
It will be appreciated if only actual users post their views
For the uninitiated pls go through the link.
I am posting my views first, I used it in tanks having vals, tenneleus, mosses and all three took a hit, later I discountined it.
However its use as a snail killer is very good. |

Gokul from Erode is one of the newest users of Gluteraldehyde. He sounds happy. Lets wait for his first hand views. |

I used Gluteraldehyde for my former 3 feet planted tank. No algae at all, good growth of plants and no fish deaths. But i noticed that my vals dint do well when i added Gluteraldehyde.
Currently i got a hair algae invasion on my planted tank.
But i dont know if i can use Gluteraldehyde as i got some Tenelles, dwarf sagittaria in there. Any views on the effect of glut on these plants?? |

I don't know of its effect on other plants but my Vallis and Java moss got hit bad. I have removed the Valls and moss from my trial tank. The other plants seem to do well though(Anubias-nana, nana petite, barteri; Java fern wendetti, and some others I cant identify). I'm planning to experiment with my outdoor container with vals and water lilly. Would like to see if it has any effect on vals. Sunlight may help the glut break down faster. Lets see. It has no noticeable effect on fish as far as I could see.
I sourced glut through a lab distributor. I got the correct percentage mixed with the help of college staff. It was done professionally and safely. I now store it in a dark glass bottle and administer it with a pipette. I store it very carefully. I don't want my young son to be anywhere near it. I don't ever let it touch my skin, even though it is less potent at that percentage. You might have read of some guys in Arup's thread, splashing 25% glut directly into the tank(may splash on your hands, fish might come thinking you are feeding and get a dose of 25% glut etc). Don't even try that. Sorry for sounding pompous.
From what I've learned till now, it's good for algae control, for nano's as co2 alternative and for bigger tanks I've dosed only thrice. Had some great vals so stopped dosing.
Best of luck . Easy does it. Great you read Arup's post and researched about glut . |

Vals. mosses, even crypts are said to have issues with glut.
Any other users, there were a lot of persons who started using glut. at that time. |

Adding to this question, Is there a relation between sensitivity to Gluteraldehyde and Sensitivity to Seachem Flourish excel?
I see that Val, mosses and anarchis are sensitive t excel as well as glut. |

I received my stock of Gluteraldehyde from Suuresh in 2006.
Wiped my whole stock of Shrimps in the tank into which it was added . After that I discontinued.
Good Algicide no doubt. But not good for crustaceans if you have them in your nano's.
Regards,
Nayak. |

To add to Nayak, I guess even cories and loaches would also be hit with glut.

I diluted 30ml 0f 25% glutaraldehyde in 500ml RO water.
I added 3ml every morning to my 2*1.5*1.5 feet tank using disposable syringe. It was added before switching on the lights and I continued this regimen for a week. In fact the dosing was much less than prescribed since this was a tank running for 6 months without any CO2. I was just experimenting to find whether I can get to grow my plants faster. The lighting was Philips true-light 36W*2 nos.
It was densely planted tank with Sagittaria subulata covering the entire substrate along with Anubias Lancelot.
Regards,
Nayak. |

Crypts had no issues with the Glut in my tank. They grew pretty well. |

I used the same glut conc as Mitra. Saad knows the concentration.
I dosed it in my nano, the tennelus never started any runner[but dint die].But apongeton, and hygros did grow well.I even had ludwiga, and crypts growing well there.Even rotala.rotundifolia did well.
But now i have shelved it and started using just DIY-CO2.
My nano[if i start it] might get the glut.BTW its in a black bottle, hope solution is still alvie.
Good luck |
