 Hi  all,

This  is  a  pretty  interesting  question.  Some  may  even  think  it  is/I  am  crazy,
 but  anyway  here  it  goes...

PLAN:  to  get  a  pair  of  S.  A.  Arapaima  and  breed  these  in  a  made  pond  outside.

How  much  water  space  is  required?
Where  in  Bangalore  or  India  can  I  get  a  pair?
Approx  cost  if  know,  please  PM.

 Anything  else  to  be  known...

I  KNOW  THIS  IS  HILARIOUSLY  FUNNY  AND  CRAZY!  BUT  WHAT  THE  HECK
ATLEAST  TRY  AND  BE  A  FAILURE  THAN  NOT  TO  TRY  AT  ALL...

 Waiting  for  comments.

 regards

 Dan

PS:  If  you  are  laughing  at  me,  do  let  me  know...   ROFL

Wow,  I  would  look  forward  for  an  answer  to  that  question  as  well.
Bet  your  pond  would  be  one  of  the  attractions  of  Bangalore  city,  if  you  get  Arapaimas.  Chuckle

i  think  its  really  impossible  to  get  arapiama  in  india  as  far  as  i  know,
try  contacting  some  breeders  in  singapore  or  the  US,
the  second  thing  is  that  arapiamas  spawn  in  a  depth  of  a  minimum  of  3-4  meters  which  is  about  9-  12  ft  depth,
so  you  need  to  have  a  pond  which  is  atleast  that  deep  if  you  want  to  breed  the  arapiama,
and  consider  the  size  as  well  ,
arapiamas  grow  to  a  size  of  10-14  ft,
so  you  need  to  have  a  pond  which  is  about  40-50  ft  long  and  about  25  ft  wide  if  you  want  to  successfully  breed  them.
because  of  their  large  size  they  are  rarely  seen  in  the  hobby,
if  you  can  afford  the  above  things  then  breeding  arapiama  is  not  a  problem,
 they  spawn  easily.
you  can  estimate  the  cost  to  be  somewhere  nearly  50-60  thousand,
including  all  the  things  required  for  setting  up  the  tank,
i  may  be  wrong  but  thats  what  i  think
you  can  give  it  a  try  if  you  have  enough  moolah  Thumb Up

 Daniel,

Are  you  seriously  planning,  because  it's  a  rare  fish  and  even  rarely  found  in  aquarium?  It  grows  upto  2.75  meter(9-10  feet).

 There  are  3  things
 1.  From  where  you'll  get  this  fish  and  cost  of  fish(main  concern  is  due  to  transport  and  rarerty)
 2.  How  much  big  pond  you  can  dig  in  your  house.  I  think  you'll  need  atleast  5  meter  long,  3  meter  width  and  9-10  feet  deep.  It's  atleast.

 3.  Do  you  really  want  to  spend  your  whole  salary  on  feeding  those  fishes  :-)

I  think  big  gun,  who  have  contact  outside  can  better  advise  on  this  topic.

 Hey  Sorry,

I  give  dimension  for  single  fish.  You  want  to  breed  them  then  you  need  two  fishes  and  atleast  triple  space.

I  can  not  think  on  this  project.  It's  better  to  involve  Aquarium  society.  You  might  need  help  of  Goverment  organization  in  this  project

 Dear  All,

No  way  not  in  my  house,  I  plan  to  put  a  pair  in  the  pond.
But  what  size/dimensions  I  need  to  check,  by  the  way
the  above  replies  have  given  some  sort  of  idea  of  the  size  of  the  pond.

I  have  a  friends  farm  in  Nellamangla  with  around  5  acres  and  plenty  place
 for  a  pond  setup.

Yes,  that  would  be  great  if  Aquarium  society  pitches  in.
maybe  they  can  place  it  in  the  big  dome  they  have...

But  I  am  seriously  thinking  about  this.  Will  keep  you  guys  updated  on  how  i  proceed.

 regards

 Dan

 Good  luck  with  your  venture.
On  the  plus  side,  I  did  see  an  ad  for  A.  gigas  juvies  in  LFS  announcements  on  IAH  a  year  or  so  ago.
Someone  from  Chennai,  can't  remember  who.

You  could  get  8-10  inchers  for  around  120-200  SGD  in  Singapore.  Recently  AVA  has  banned  their  sales  in  Singapore  so  they  might  be  hard  to  come  by.  They  are  farmed  in  Brazil  and  Peru  as  a  food  fish.

Threads  in  LFS  Announcements  get  deleted  every  so  often  so  that  link  won't  be  around.
