Hi,
I am Niranjan K. Second year, Computer Technology, CIT. I currently have a 15 gallon tank with 4 ghost shrimps, 4 green shrimps, 18 moscow blue guppies, a small driftwood with ferns and at the background H.difformis and red cabomba. I am in to this hobby for the past three years. I love plants, shrimps and small fishes. I am interested to know more on this wonderful hobby.........
I am Muthusami. S, a Lead Technical Communicator working for an IT services company in Chennai. I am very new to this hobby and started this 4 months back. I have a glass aquarium measuring 1.5x1.5x1.5 foot of 6mm thick glass. Presently I do not have any plants or decorations in my tank but planning to have a planted tank. I keep the following fishes:
1. 4 common gold fish
2. 2 medium sized (2 inches maybe) telescope goldfish
3. 2 Koi
4. 1 white angel
5. 2 Albino rainbow shark (babies)
6. 4 red zebra danios (~0.75 inches)
When visiting aquarticles.com, I came to know that there is an Indian website for aquarium hobbyists and delighted very much.
On the fish community I am keeing, please advise if there is any incompatibility between the species in the tank because earlier I had 2 Ram cichlids which nip the fins of goldfishes; as a result I returned them to the shop.
Hope I will be having nice time and well informed about the hobby.

Hi everyone,
i am having two aquariums. one is 170 liters Cichlid aquarium.
and another is 90 liter planted aquarium(newly started).i am working with Accenture. and i live in Bangalore.
my name is Muddassar and i love cichlids. i am very particular about clean water.
cichlid tank is 3 x 1.5 x 1.25 feet with 7 cichlids and two loach.
1. one metriaclima sp zebra mbenji(3 inches)
2. one Copadichromis Borleyi(4 inches)
3. two Cichlasoma Salvini(4 inches)(not at all Aggressive). hardly comes out of its cave.
4. one jewel cichlid(3 inches)(female, and thus very less aggressive as compared to the male which i gave away).
5. one Aulonocara Baenschi(3 inches)
6. one Aulonocara Nyassae.(3 inches)
7. two Yo Yo loach(funny fish)(2.5 -3 inch)
--(sizes are approx)
--the gravel is sand with shells(preserves hardness like natural buffer), filter is internal 1000 liter per hour. i break the flow of the power filter by putting a rock in front of the flow. so the water movement is not at all there. though the loach intensionally go near the rock to enjoy the flow(river based funny creature).
--water changes for Cichlid tank is 30-35 percent every 7 days.
--the food for Cihlids is "Hikari Cichlid Slaple", "Tetra Cichlid", Ruby Red"
Planted tank is 2.5 x 1 x 1.25 feet and with 16 Neon Tetras and following plants.
1. Hydrocotyle.
2. Aponogeton crispus.
3. Java moss on a driftwood.
4. Indian fern.
5. Vallisneria (broad leaves)(no idea which one, but certainly not corkscrew or spiralis)
6. Vallisneria (thin kind of grass like thing(2-3 mm in width), not even sure if that is vallisneria, usually seen in Takashi Amano's aquarium)
7. one sick Amazon plant.
the substrate is 1.5 inch of Laterite soil(3-4 mm in diameter), and on top of it is river sand around 2 inch(< 1mm in diameter). CO2 is DIY. i diffuse it with Glass diffuser. and the filter is "Dolphin" Hang back filter 500 litre/hr.
--water changes for planted tank is 20-25 percent every 4-5 days.
--the food for Neons is "Hikari micro Pellets" and "Blood red worms"
Also, i have a 5 litre bowl with a Betta. and he eats Blood Red worms only.
me off to Sleep now. i'll be definitely posting queries as well as answering them(all according to the forum Rules)....Bye everyone.
Cheers,
Muddassar
I am Pritam. A software consultant by profession and am currently pursuing my MBA at SPJIMR, Mumbai.
I was introduced to this hobby very early in my childhood by my neighbor. I did try my hands at it initially, but never managed to have stocked aquarium due to my habit of experimenting with combination of GoldFish and other fishes and also with the Decor. (I never did have the capital for big filters). I had stopped during my college days after I lost a beautiful aquarium when a big sandstone cave slipped from my hand and cracked the floor. It flooded our living room adn washed away my hobby. My fish did not survive the night.
In the last few years. I did a lot of research and during a trip to US, Idecided to start allover again. This setup is in my new house. I had the LFS to set it up.
Volume : 75 gallon tank
Size : 30X24X24
Filter : 1 400L/H canister filter and a pair of UG Filter
Substrate : Large Colored gravel.
Lighting : 2 1.5' Aquarium White Light.
Planting : Plastic.
Decor : 1 Sandstone cave. (My reminder of past failures) & 1 Acrylic Stone and some bough wood.
I put a pair of dollars and two red tails shark to set up the Nitrogen Cycle. Let the system be for 2 months. By the time I got back. Ammonium and Nitrate levels were down to zero and Nitrite levels were at about 10ppm.
Then After two moths My LFS gave me 4 Blood red Parrots and 2 Yellow Parrots. To better keep these fish I researched a little on the net. I became aware the aversions hobbyists have for Parrots. The deformities and Swimming motions, et al were now a part of my life. I have chosen to keep the fish and take best care of them. I know a few of us wont like me for this. But somewhere, I did not have the heart to send it back to LFS and have someone else less educated cater to their special needs. They had joined as 1.5 inch juveniles and after 4 months are now about 4". All the 6 of them.
Parrot research got me into cichilds and this was the time when I discovered IAH. Appreciate the knowledge that you have put together here. With that I set on to refurb my tank. The problem with the old tank was that the decor outshone the fish and they were never visible. I researched on the habitat of African Cichild and decided to do the best I could.
This is my new tank setup.
Substrate : White Sand ( Washed and Filtered)
Customized Egg Crate for safety from rocks.
Decor : Caves Like hiding places made by stacking broken slate pieces
Sand stone caves
Small plastic Aquatic in clumps.
Bough wood in the center.
Filter : 2 400 L/H canister filters to help in Nitrogen cycle.
Fishes :
1 Red Tail
2 Silver Dollars ( 5 inches)
2 Green Terror ( 3 inches)
2 Texas (2 inches)
2 5-bar ( 2 inches)
6 Parrots (3 Inches)
2 Blue Dolphins
1 Orange Cichild ( 3 inches - The King of the Aquaria)
1 Pseudo. Elongatus Cichlid
10 1/2 Inch black widow(skirt) tetra(Dither fish)
1 Black Ghost Knife Fish ( 3 inches - Bought it as a juvenile of 1.25 inches)
With all these changes, my nitrogen cycle is a little off balance. but I am doing 40% water change till things settle down. My dollars are now about 5 inches.
I know it was a little too much. But then I was not sure that all of them would survive. Actually all did other then a pair of Spotted Dubosi which were really small (3/4 th) and were killed by my aggresive Red Tail shark when i was redecorating the aquarium.
Anyways, I think that the intro has become a little too long, but then, my passion for my fishes will still outdo this if I try again.
All feedback welcome.
Regards,
Pritam
