 Nope.

 a)  C.  micropeltes  is  not  found  in  India

 b)  The  fry  of  this  species  has  2  lateral  stripes.

 Thanks  Rahul,  could  it  be  an  introduced  species  ?
 The  following  really  leads  me  to  believe  what  we  caught  is  micropeltes  fry

 I  could  be  plain  wrong  though

 @  Hayath:  The  report  makes  me  live  the  trip  again....Super  cool  Thanks

 @  Madhu  :  Where  in  Calicut  was  the  Denisoni  spotted?...I  have  never  heard  of  the  Denisoni  being  seen  there  ...All  my  Calicut  and  Telicherry  relatives  have  seen  my  Denisoni  and  have  reported  never  have  seen  it  before..

 But  have  heard  of  the  E.Canarensis  being  spotted  there..esp  in  the  fish  markets  (Could  be  the  fry  of  Maculatus?)...Ajay(jeyjajee)  was  referring  to  that  as  well

 @  Rahul  :  The  channa  was  caught  in  fairly  brackish  waters..I  was  under  the  impression  the  red  shakehead  was  the  Micropeltes...There  are  as  well  a  lot  of  reports  of  introduction  in  kerala  waters...Will  have  to  wait  and  watch  until  they  grow  up  Smile

 There  was  so  much  more  that  we  wanted  to  do...Two  days  were  just  not  enough...wanted  to  do  more  fishing  along  Irutti  and  Wayanad....  Sigh!!!!!

 But  then  there  is  always  the  next  time  Smile

 @Vyas,
 denisoniis  are  sorta  "endemic"  to  calicut.   Atleast  that's  what  most  of  us  belive.   We've  been  there  before  and  check  out  Madan's  article.   Its  vividly  documented.

 Look  closely  at  the  fry  pic  in  your  link,  C.  micropeltes  fry  have  2  dark  lateral  stripes.  Your  fish  has  one  Wink

 The  micropeltes  look-alike  from  India  is  a  distinct  species,  C.  diplogramme.
