Hi,
I am looking to buy a camcorder.
Any recommendations?
Please assume that I know nothing about camcorders.
What will be the cost range of a decent one with 'Must Have' features?
Is there a considerable price difference b/w India and US prices.
Thanks
Rohan
PS:
Recommendations of websites with good read are also welcome |

Hi Rohan,
For the asian market, this site offers invaluable tips and suggestions based on your usage of the digicam.
http://reviews.cnet.com/camcorder-buying-guide/
Between US and India, sure there would be difference in price - especially now - as there are good discounts being offered in the US due to the economic meltdown. However, personally I would prefer buying the same here in India, as it offers a lot of 'plus' in terms of compatibility to our electrical outlets and also to a certain extent the weather conditions. Not to mention the service aspect.
My choice would be 'Panasonic' or 'Canon' - as a brand.
Good luck and let me know your choice.
Regards,
K Ram |

Rohan, in your place I would give lots of thought on the storage / recording media. Just too many nowadays to decide on their pros and cons. |

Hi Rohan,
I have a JVC with an internal 30GB hard drive and am very happy with its results - you can check the JVC site for details http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?productId=PRD1207000&pathId=119
The site gives the prices in the US and as Ram suggested there will be huge discounts now as well as on the day after christmas (boxing day sales are huge). If you know someone in Singapore you will get it cheapest there. There was a difference of 50 USD between the discounted price in US v/s Singapore.
JVC India will provide service for products bought anywhere in the world.
Hope this helps,
Regards, |

Dear Rohan
I'm a satisfied customer of Sony HDR-TG1. You can go for it.

Thanks everyone.
Kaushik,
I would have loved to buy the one you suggested but that seems way out of my budget. :(
What do you all think is the best format?
MiniDV , HDD or DVD Camcorder? |

Hi,
What is your budget? I have been using Sony for quite some time right from the DV Cam era to HDD and I feel Sony is one of the best in India. Of course this is my opinion.
MiniDV is a pain as you have to go on transferring the tapes. If you dont have a DVD recorder or a good PC with DVD writer, it will be more hassle to run to someone who can do it.
DVD cam on the other hand will be bulky, and if the DVD gets spoilt while recording (there are many poor quality DVD+/-R in the market), you will lose previous recording.
So the best option is going for a HDD Cam.
If budget is a constraint, go for the miniDV and get a digital DV cable to transfer the stuff to your PC and burn it on DVDs. I have a DVD recorder that does this transferring without any hassle, by attaching the cam directly to it. You can do that too.
Hope this helps. |

Thats a good info. Thanks Avi.
I dont know if Rs. 20K is a good budget for a camcorder ?
I have been reading about them and I too am inclined towards getting a HDD Cam.
Do you think I will get a good HDD Cam within that budget ?
It will be good if you can suggest me a good model of HDD as well as Mini DV.
Thanks
Rohan |

Thanks Ram and Tirtha.
Tirtha,
I think that must be DCR-SR65E.
I guess my choice will be mostly between 45E and 65E. |

Hi Rohan,
My friend is using that model. It is pretty good for shooting home videos and can be used with a combination of HDD and memory stick.
I hope they bring out models where you can transfer videos on the fly directly from the cam to external HDDs and USB disks. |

Cant that be done with HDD models?
I mean I was under the impression that the vids can be transferred from the HDD of cams to a PC HDD through USB. |
