Anyone  bred  them  in  India  as  yet?

Have  four(4"+)  of  them  in  my  Planted  Tank...One  of  then  is  very  plump  and  the  fishes  are  suddenly  extra  active!...The  Monsoon  Perhaps?

I  am  wondering  the  same  --  and  having  observed  my  8  Denisonii  barbs  I  can  let  my  imagination  run  wild.

I  see  5  of  my  fish  as  deeper  bodied  and  the  red  line  stops  halfway  below  the  dorsal  fin  (females?).  For  the  other  3,  they  are  more  streamlined  and  the  red  line  extends  beyond  the  trailing  edge  of  the  dorsal  fin  (males?).  Hmm  ...

When  I  was  in  US  I  was  close  to  some  aquarists  who  took  special  interest  in  southeast  asian  biotopes.  One  of  them  had  told  me  some  of  the  most  difficult  hillstream  cyprinids  can  be  coaxed  to  spawn  by  throwing  in  a  few  ice  cubes  alongwith  a  reduction  in  barometric  pressure.  I  have  no  clue  but  I  doubt  that  would  work  with  Denisonii  barbs  Sad

I  got  some  information  from  the  German  Dipl.  Biol.  Frank  Schäfer,  and  editor  of  Aqualog  when  he  visited  my  fish  house  2  weeks  ago.
He  indicated  that  the  males  of  denisonis  have  a  greenish/  bluish  line  on  top  of  the  red  line  in  adult  size  that  does  not  appear  to  be  that  distinguished  at  females.
I  have  some  20  denisonis  now,  and  I  can  clearly  see  this  line  on  the  larger  ones  and  that  some  of  the  other  ones  appears  a  bit  paler  (females?)

Another  question:  How  many  denisonis  of  10  cm  size  would  you  risk  to  keep  in  a  325  litre  planted  tank  with  a  good  working  Eheim  Pro.3,  2080  filter,  evt.  also  +  a  power  head.  I  need  to  move  some  to  get  better  space  for  my  E.  canarensis.

And  then  your  OT  information.  What  is  the  difficult  hillstream  cyprinids?  Is  Sewellia  lineolata  included?  I  just  got  a  few  fry  from  this  one  here  in  Norway  some  weeks  ago.  But  no  ice.

Better  you  start  a  separate  thread  on  the  Sewellia  sp  in  an  appropriate  forum  topic.  It  is  not  a  native  here.

I  currently  have  6  adult  denisonii  in  a  270  (60"x24"x12")  liter  tank  and  I  think  they  look  a  bit  crowded.  I  could  easily  fit  a  dozen  more  in  there  safely,  as  far  as  filtration  is  concerned,  but  I  think  they  like  a  bit  of  room  to  swim  around  in.

 From  the  article:

The  duo  bought  a  few  ‘Miss  Kerala’  fish  from  Kerala  and  after  acclimatising  them  to  Chennai,  injected  hormones  and  allowed  them  to  breed  in  a  tank  specially  made  for  the  purpose.

Is  this  really  what  you  call  sucessful  breeding?  Injecting  hormones?
I'm  not  sure.  Would  just  question  it.

Josti,  Very  few  of  us  are  fans  of  hormone  induced  breeding.  As  far  I  know  these  fish  have  never  been  bred  naturally  in  India.

to  add  to  Trevors  statement  "As  far  I  know  these  fish  have  never  been  bred  naturally  in  India  in  a  AQUARIUM"

Unconfirmed  reports  in  Indonesia  also  mention  that  the  "Bleeding  eyes"(translated  name  in  Malayalam)  are  being  bred  with  Hormones  in  some  farms  there.

denisonii's  are  now  regularly  for  sale  many  places  in  Europe.  Also  in  Norway.
The  prices  for  the  small  ones  are  now  often  less  than  the  half  of  what  we  bought  the  wild  ones  for  two  years  ago.  Bigger  are  never  available.
I  have  read  several  places  that  these  we  get  now  are  all  bread  with  hormones  in  the  far  east,  several  places,  and  probably  in  the  Check  republic.
Ethically  this  is  not  acceptable  to  me,  but  on  the  other  hand  it  can  save  the  wild  ones  in  Kerala,  which  can  be  a  good  thing.

Can  anyone  really  knowing  the  places  denisoniis  are  living  in  the  wild  explain  to  me  how  the  natural  conditions  are  in  the  area  during  the  year?  I  mean  :
Changing-  water  parameters,  -temperatures,  -water  flow,-  rain  conditions,  plants,  stream  bottom,  surrounding  soil  composition  and,  you  name  it.
Please  describe  it  here  or  send  me  a  PM.

But  back  to  the  original  topic.  Anyone  else  have  some  knowledge  about  sexing  them?
And  anyone  who  can  confirm  that  the  females  rarely  survive  in  captivity?

 Hi  Guys,
Been  to  ornamental  fish  workshop  recently,  i  met  a  couple  of  exporters  from  south  east  asia.  the  price  of  P  denisoni  sold  from  taiwan  to  china  is  2.5  dollars,  which  was  until  recently  15  dollars,  it  is  not  possible  to  have  such  sharp  drop  in  price  that  too  when  exports  have  reduced  due  to  shortage.  Breeding  denisoni  with  hormones  have  been  tried,  but  without  sucess  as  the  fishes  are  too  delicate,  i  have  met  quite  a  few  guys  who  have  tried  breeding  using  hormones  and  they  have  said  that  the  fishes  die  within  an  hour  of  injecting.  The  only  way  seems  to  be  envirnomental  manipulation.

Yes.  That's  about  what  I  asked  in  my  last  message.

I  am  planning  to  make  a  denisonii  tank,  including  all  what  is  expected  needed.

Any  suggestion  how  this  should  be  done?  Planning  it  to  be  some  1400  litres.

 Hi  guys,

If  i  were  to  know  the  envirnomental  conditions  that  induce  them  to  spawn,  probably  i  would  be  the  first  to  try  it  out.
